Also, I don't like how snobbish she is. Although a lot of the kids at her school are lame I agree, she sortof has this "I'm better than you attitude". Hmm..
How come the heroines never have any hobbies or good friends? Haha. (I noticed this with Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels too) Maybe so that the story can sort of consume their life?
Well, I guess my one complaint is that Stephenie Meyer's writing in the first novel is a little too...simplistic, for lack of a better word. And I really can't stand how she always has Bella biting her lip. UUUGGHH!! If I had to read "I bit my lip" one more time....
That said, I do think her writing improved immensely with each novel, especially with Breaking Dawn.
And as for plot things I don't like, I was really weirded out with the switcheroo. I have no idea why she had Edward offer that to Jacob. Where was the editor?

I also think that her writing improved as she progressed with the books. I read it all in one go basically (I was a late comer) so I could really see the difference and her battle scenes and plot for the last one were amazing!
I was weirded out by a lot of things that went on in that love triangle, but I guess that's where the drama comes from! haha
I totally agree with you, and Breaking Dawn is probably my favorite. I love that she got dark, and I guess the weirdness of (some things) the plot brings out the Gothic. I would be reading The Host if I weren't re-reading Eclipse right now. (I REALLY want to see the movie, and that's the closest thing to it right now.) I know Stephenie says The Host is the best thing she's written, so I'm dying to read my copy once I finish Eclipse...again. :)

Although I'm a super fan of the book, I did enjoy this hilarious criticism of it: http://stoney321.livejournal.com/3171... I haven't finished it yet, but it shows a lot of the Mormon refs. Anyone here heard of it? Jw.
I never noticed that Bella bit her lip! However, the use of the word perfect got me down a little. I hate that word but now use it more myself since I have been influenced by Stephenie.

I just think these sort of books send the wrong message. That you shouldn't have friends or be interested in things or have any sort of life, just wait for Prince Charming to come along and do that all for you. It's lame.
The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide
I am just reading this and Stephenie Meyer is very shy. I suspected it from her character Bella as people tend to write about themselves or someone they know. When you read this you will learn more about Stephenie and so understand the books better. I would sure love to meet her. I wish I could go to Forks again if they celebrate Bella Swan's birthday again.

I agree with you Maritza as there is nothing snobbish about Bella Swan. She isn't a clothes horse like Alice Cullen obsessed with how she looks. Most snobs are vain. If anyone is snobbish I think it would be Rose but she has overcome that over the years. She was very spoiled in her human life.

I don't think that it sends that message at all. I never had a large group of friends growing up and I turned out okay.

I'm sorry Ashley but I gotta use yours as an example. I understand that is your opinion, and I respect it, and you are entilted to it. First off, I have to say, that I'm a lover of the Twilight series, and I really don't like Bella either.
But, just because she has little friends, and no hobbies. Doesn't mean that she's just waiting around for prince charming to show up. She's just an odd girl, mature for her age, she knew that she needed to keep up with, and take care of her "hairbrained" mother. So, she had no time for friends or hobbies. She had to take care of the house and do her homework so she could take care of herself when she was done with high school.
Why aren't we blaming Renee, Bella's mother for the way Bella is. She's the one that gave up on her marrige. (without even trying it seems) She's the one that put it into Bella's head that she shouldn't get married right out of HS, that she had to have a carreer. What's so wrong with getting married and being a housewife, just because it wasn't the life for Renee, dosen't mean that it won't be the life for Bella. AND, everyone keeps forgeting that Bella didn't just give up her life and dreams for Edward. She just included him in them. She fully intended to go to college and get that career when her newborn period was over. And these days she could get any degree that she wanted to over the internet, while trying to take care of a half-vampire child at home.
Sorry if I am venting, but, there it is.

My favorite Vampire is Emmett. So, I don't really swoon over Edward. I wouldn't kick him out of bed for eating crackers, but he just dosen't make me, well, swoon.
So, for me, Edward in Eclipse just got on my nerves with his "perfectness" He was just soooo forgiving, soooooo understanding, sooooooo willing to let Bella do anything she wanted or get away with anything! I can't believe he let her kiss Jacob! He even kinda set it up for her! I wonder if Alice helped him with that? Sorry for being gross but, she could have peeed in his Volvo and he would have said, "That's okay my darling, you're just human, you had to pee somewhere. I will love you beyond forever for it."
Gimme a Break! Talk about a marshmellow! I guess that's why I like Emmett! he he he
I have to agree with you, Lindis, that the wrong message complaints bother me. I was an English major, so my friends all despise it--even though they read the entire series! I got so mad at them when we went to see "New Moon" together. Throughout the movie, my friends kept making wise cracks and derogatory comments about the film and its messages in very loud voices. They ignored me when I shshed them and kept laughing at inappropriate parts. I was so angry and embarrassed since there was a birthday party of little girls two rows ahead of us. After the film was over, they went on and on during the credits about the offensive messages in the movie. No one in that theater got to enjoy the movie thanks to them. I was so furious afterward I couldn't talk.
That said, I do see where people are coming from and believe they have a right to their opinions, as do I and anyone else. The story is about the strong, powerful, perfect man protecting the little woman. But, I think if you take The Twilight Saga for what it is, a love story, then you see Stephenie really just wanted to entertain.
I think the bigger question is not "what messages does this series send to young girls?," but, "why are these books so wildly popular if the message seems to be offensive?". The answer to that is what can solve social problems related to messages, not just the book alone.
This is a great discussion, by the way. :)

I agree with you about the new book. I loved loved loved the interview with Stephenie at the beginning. She talks about writing with such an infectious enthusiasm. I could listen to her thoughts on writing and reading all day!

1. Edward's cold skin (even though I forget it a lot at times, when it stuck in brain at moment and my imagination went wild, I would either shiver or feel the creepiness of Bella always encountering cold skin).
2.The switcheroo that Edward suggested to Jacob.
3. Jacob's love for Bella immediately followed by his imprinting on her daughter....(I couldn't deal with it for a long time, but now I've managed to digest the whole imprinting thing-even though I wished for the human hybrid Brazilian male to be Renesme's mate).
4. Lastly, in the movies, the portrayal of Edward is so wrong at times! i.e.-the massive beatdown given to Edward by that Volturi guy; the way Edward appears to be weak in the fight sequence with Victoria and her puppet AND also when he confronts Jacob about kissing Bella (Edward wouldn't huff and puff and raise his voice).

Standing true to character, Edward is supposed to be elegant and cool in his power whether he is seething or carefully plotting. He is over a hundred years old and it is out of character to have him huffing and breathing all heavily as is portrayed in the movie. I just prefer his quiet/subtle power because it speaks volumes. He doesn't lose his cool except for certain times...when he is losing/there's threat to Bella *i.e. she call in the "make me into a vampire" vote or James is after her or Jane tries to hurt her, etc. I really feel like Jacob was never a threat in his mind...so much as Jacob was a constant reminder of the mistakes he made where Bella is concerned and his realization that Jacob is indeed someone Bella considers family.

After a while, I just wanted to tell her to suck it up and live a little! People always say that Bella is weak, but I think she is too strong-willed.

I think she is strong willed also and not a wimpy conformist. Alice sure put some pressure on her. No one would ever make me wear those stupid heels. I am reading about how many women died at 911 due to stupid high heel shoes. They finally had to take them off and walk barefoot. This is in the book The Unthinkable. She was living but in her own way as she heard a different drummer not the be like everyone else one.

Alice! OMG she did it so much during the movies. It was pretty distracting.

I always hated the way it went down in the baseball field, with james...I never saw any reason whatsoever that edward shouldn't have just scooped bella up and ran as soon as alice saw the trio coming. I don't understand how any of them thought it would be better for her to stay and pretend to be a vampire, when she obviously wasn't. it shouldn't have even taken james as long as it did to notice her.
anyway- that never made sense to me...

loved this! hilarious, and I could totally see it happening! :D

ah, yes- it is ridiculous, especially here on goodreads. and I've even seen grown men talk crap to teenage girls over it.

loved this! h..."
Right! LOL. I agree. It would've been great if she would've peed, anywhere for that matter. I dont think she used the restroom once! wth?

I got that....but at this moment I cant think of anything that I hated more then the UGLY UGLY wigs they used in the movies and the crap I get from my husband and every other person. :)

You won't get that in Forks, WA. Almost everyone there was delighted to see this old lady buying Twilight stuff and carrying on. The guy who runs Liddell's is a big fan and he will tell you tons of great stories.
I never hear much negativity except on goodreads. Most people who don't like it just ignore but not here. Just try to ignore them or it can get you down.(I know)

Hi Kirby, If it hadn't gone down the way it did THERE WOULD BE NO STORY!!!!!! I also think Edward should have just run with Bella but if he had where would the story have gone from there? We had to have Victoria as the arch villain. Just think about it. There would have only been one book not 4.

Being sort of Victorian in my outlook I don't want to know when Bella had to pee...that is mostly boring. I like Stephenie Meyer's old fashioned outlook. That is part of the GREAT appeal of Twilight for me. So many books today just make me want to throw up on the very first page. Why would anyone want to read that?
However, I did just read Wild: Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail and she does give you details like that which I didn't want to read but they are an important part of the story of what she suffered on the trail. My best friend advised me to read it and she was right. I couldn't put it down. Be sure to add it to your to read list. Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail

Oh, I so agree with you Lindis. Everything you say here I agree with! (very unusual)......excellent points you make, I love it:

That isn't being negative. Bella is just being herself. We are NOT all cookie cutters. Being overly concerned with clothes is boring to me. I love a heroine who is NOT focused on clothes. Alice is a little shallow in that way to me. Those shoes were ridiculous. I know plenty of people who don't want anyone focusing on their birthday! Bella is kinda shy and doesn't want all the attention which I think is also nice. I wish there were more people like her.
She is just not a gimme, gimme kind of person so very rare. Her values are better than most. She isn't focused on surface things but more on the inner life.
I really like Bella Swan.

I got The Host last Christmas and read it in January. Its very good but for me its not Twilight. I couldn't believe that SM got me to cry over a "parasite". I actually had to get the Kleenex box out. IMO that is some good writing when you can make me cry.
The Host
The Host

Well at 39+1 I am older than you and I just love to read " Young adult" books as they are very good books and extremely enjoyable and you are NEVER too old to read them. Might struggle with my age but never with reading books for the younger audience. Read what you enjoy!

Alice...I haven't read THE HOST but I will before the movie next year....I am not really into Sci-Fi stuff but since it SM book I will read it.

Yes, it was dramatic. I liked it!
There are parts in the last movie that I didn't care for. One was when the vampire who had some control over nature slapped his hand on the ice and caused a giant crack to appear and different ones starting falling into the pit. That really bothered me. I am also bothered tho by these sink holes that are appearing as they are too creepy.

the thing i hate is that vampires sparkle!
I just hate everything about New Moon. I hate that Bella complains the whole and that she leads Jacob on. I understand that Edward left her and she's upset, but that doesn't mean she had to complain the whole book. I don't understand why she would do things to make Jake like her, and then just go to Italy like that when he asked her to stay. If she hadn't lead him on like that there wouldn't be a love triangle in Eclipse, and the whole book would be different.

That makes them more like angels! Angels are beings of light that sparkle. On my 10th reading of Twilight I am counting the number of pages where SM mentions that Edward is like an angel. So far there are three.
I think her idea that he is like an angel is most intriguing. Do you ever think about angels? I have read a few books about them. The best one is by Dr. Moolenberg who writes angel stories set in Europe.
I think SM was very original in her thinking that vampires sparkle. I love sparkly things!! and things in nature that are iridescent. Have you ever noticed how many things are naturally iridescent? Think about it sometime. Up here in the mountains after a thunderstorm even the aspens have a sparkle from the dew drops and the clouds sometimes have an eerie light.
The snow if often dry! and called powder and it snaps and sparkles unbelievably. Its like millions of diamonds. That is one of the things that I simply LOVE.

Jacob was just naturally going to like Bella no matter what as it was his fate due to Renesmee. Do you believe in fate? Even if Bella had been mean as a snake to him he would have been drawn to her as he was fated to fall in love with her daughter.

Bella did not lead Jacob on at all. It was simply fate. It was all predestined.
