I was completly suprised by it

I had trouble accepting the "voice" of the protagonist/narrator as a suburban teen girl, but the book was interesting overall.

I think this teen read contains a little bit too much adult content for ages 12 & up. I think maybe ages 16 & up! Almost done reading this 480 page book in only two days. Could not put it down! So heartbreaking, yet so uplifting! A young boy of 15(gay)...he flames amazing, winning the hearts of everyone he mets (young & old) except for those whose hatred for anyone gay. The story of his triumphs & his humiliations. A story of a hate crime & the murder of Leonard Pelkey! How a life cut short changed the lives of those who knew him forever! Loved this novel! Would make a blockbuster movie. The whole story is written in "narrative" of Pheobe (his cousin...age teen girl). A web of adult issues ~woven into a beautiful tapestry, a story that might change your life too!

I read this book when I was 16 and even at that age I don't think I fully comprehended everything that occurred in this book. Not that I hadn't been exposed, just that this book had an abundance of things happening within it that I was entirely to close to (being a teenager and whatnot). I loved it nevertheless, it remains one of my favorite books. I read it annually.
