Jenna | 40 comments What are the major Shakespeare Festivals in the US/Canada or even Europe? whata bout non-Shakespeare festivals?

NOTE: I am thinking of consistent, yearly festivals -- not one-time productions or special events.

So far I can think of (or have been mentioned here):

Shakespeare
Alabama Shakespeare Festival
American Shakespeare Center
Colorado Shakespeare Festival
Illinois Shakespeare Festival
Old Globe (San Diego, CA)
Oregon (Ashland)Festival
Southwest Shakespeare Season (Mesa, AZ)
Stratford Shakespeare Festival (Canada)
Utah Shakespeare Festival

Other Dramatic Festivals
Shaw Festival (Canada)

Felix (felix_g_miller) | 1 comments The Alabama Shakespeare Festival puts on a variety of plays, including but not limited to Shakespearean works, each summer in Montgomery, AL.

Old-Barbarossa Edinburgh festival and fringe are coming up in month or 2. OK, it's in Scotland, so a bit out of the way for some of you.
Usually has a fair sprinkling of old Bill in amongst the madness...great pubs and a volcano in the middle of town too.
Saw one of the worst Macbeths there back in '92...scenery chewing nonsense. Usually good stuff though.

happy (happyone) | 8 comments I'm new here and I'll add my two cents. I've attend the Utah Shakespeare Festival yearly for the past 15 yrs or so. Great venue if you're ever in the area, but it's not really near anywhere - about half way between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.

Traditionally they perform 3 Shakespeare plays in their outdoor replica Elizabethan theater and 3 non-Shakespeare in an indoor theater. They are in the middle of performing the history plays in chronological order - this year was Henry V and did a great job! The only draw back was the fire alarm just after intermission :)

This year they moved into a new outdoor Elizabethan Theater and are still working some bugs (literally :)) out.

Steve Finegan | 26 comments Oh, by all means add the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland (near the California border). Used to attend every year until about 2005. Absolutely fantastic! https://www.osfashland.org/

Tracey (stewartry) Efforts are being made to reopen the Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, CT, where I believe they used to center a Shakespeare festival. Stay tuned...

Bruce | 27 comments Another one you should be aware of is Santa Cruz Shakespeare, formerly Shakespeare Santa Cruz, in Santa Cruz California, which has been presenting a summer festival of Shakespeare and his contemporaries for the past 35 years. I served on the Board for six years, and as Board President for 3, and attended for a number of years. They do a terrific job and are well worth seeing.
