e. I want to strangle Alice.
2. Weak female characters
a. Renee
b. Bella
i. Gets married at 18
ii. Has a dangerous baby at 18

iii. This is the model for perfect relationships.
HANDLE WITH CARE.
1. Same plot as My Sister's Keeper
2. Horrible, nonsensicle ending.
3. Unsympathetic Main Character who was a total asshole and really, really annoying.
4. Bad portrayal of cutting and eating disorders.
CINDY ELLA.

Okay, I liked Oh My Gods, but oh well. I'm just curious..... what the heck is a Mary Sue?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Vampire Diaries: The Awakening
1. Writing style is just.... bad
a. way dull
b. does nothing to draw readers into the scene
c. has no original ideas whatsoever
2. Girl MC, Elena, is perfect
a. I still don't understand why a vampire would go for her just because she looks like a previously lost love. That's way creepy and stalkerish and just.... gross. And for them to fall in love? Especially so soon? Way cliche....
3. Author spends too much time on pointing out how different MC is from everyone else
a. If she was THAT different from everyone else, she'd be labeled as a freak and/or shunned.
The first book was so annoying, I didn't even read the others......

Ok, so I watched the Vampire Diaries with my brother to make fun of it, but I ended up actually liking the show. Then I went to read the books and I wanted to rip my eyes out. I only read the first one and it sucked. It was so stupid. The main character was so obsessed with herself. She thought every guy wanted her and it was just stupid.

A COUNTESS BELOW STAIRS
1. Mary Sue character
a. Everybody loves her.
b. Beautiful
c. No flaws
2. Predictable plot
a. Right, right, I haven't seen that plot 100 thousand times.
b. The girl gets the guy? Shocker.
3. Completely unsympathetic villain.
a. She literally kicks a dog.
b. You need to care about the villain a little bit, am I right?
4. The words on the page were far too big.
a. Is this a rather silly reason?
i. Yes.
b. Is it still a legitimate reason?
i. YES.
Meh. No. It's good in small amounts, Baxter. Like when you're all depressed and need something sappy and fluffy to get your mind off of it.
House of Night (Note that this opinion is only based off the first 60 pages or so.)
The characters were stupid and annoying. The plot was dumb. I wanted to burn the book for putting me through so much pain. Instead, I just didn't finish the book and gave it away.

Yes, I've heard that that series was bad, so I never read it. I have met the occasional person who really liked them, but I have no desire to pursue it.

God, I owned that book and I think I never read it and ended up throwing or giving it away. Good thing.
me too. I am officially confused on that series.
I would say don't, but it's your choice :P
ugh, see it's things like that...I will never know...
ULYSSES
1. Gary Stu character
a. Ulysses was loved by everyone except Poseidon and the occasional other god or goddess.
b. Way too perfect.
2. Repetitive and predictable plot
a. The MC was always getting seduced by a woman at one point or another.
b. They would have a way of getting home, and then that would be ruined because of everyone's curiosity/idiocy.
c. All of this happened countless times.
d. There were too many conflicts, and yet none of them contributed to each other or anything. Each chapter might as well have been its own stand-alone novel.
3. Horrible writing style
a. "Ulysses did this. He felt like this. His men did this. Then this also happened."
i. You can't retell a story like The Odyssey if you're not going to do it well.
ii. What happened to "show, don't tell"?
b. I was bored out of my mind the entire time.

Okay, so if you read them there is a good chance you will either hate them and want to burn them or be hopelessly addicted to the terribleness. One way or the other, it might be best NOT to read them. Yet since I have so much hysterical fun when I read them, I want to say you should too.
Now I do want to read them just see what's so bad/addicting about them. I think I'll regret ever picking them up, but curiosity killed the cat and satisfaction brought him back.

Did we read (or try to read) the same Ulysses?
I guess I will read them, too. I promise not to hold you responsible if I hate them. haha
Just a warning: I'm very opinionated about this series...
THE HUNGER GAMES (spoilers contained)
1. Katniss...
a. Mary Sue
i. Peeta loves her
ii. Gale loves her, and yet...
iii. She has no goals, dreams, hopes, or personality.
iv. She was just... naive.
2. Similar characters
a. Peeta and Gale
i. They are both the good friends of Katniss who want something more
ii. They both appear quiet, yet they also have bad tempers at times
iii. Sometimes they had a surprising lack of personality
3. Writing style is juvenile
a. Sometimes an entire paragraph would be composed of fragment sentences.
b. Frequent spelling mistakes. (At one point, it said Katniss' "heads" were hurting. I missed the part where we learned she had more than one head.)
c. Collins uses absolutely ridiculous cliffhangers just so people will read to the next chapter. If a book is actually decent, the author doesn't need to do that.
d. It was written in first person, so I could already tell Katniss wasn't going to lose.
e. There were times when I couldn't tell when an event was occuring at all.
CATCHING FIRE (spoilers contained)
1. Badly written "love triangle"
a. At this point, I don't think it's a love triangle at all because Katniss was so oblivious and uncaring. She acts as if she doesn't love either of them, so why should I care who she "chooses"?
b. Peeta and Gale were too similar to create conflict in this "love triangle". Love triangles fail without conflict.
2. Katniss showed no growth
a. Nothing about her changed. You'd think that almost dying in the arena would shake her up a little bit. The only thing different about her would be the nightmares, but her actual personality remained as irritating as before.
b. She still has no hobbies! She doesn't even desire to develop a talent - she just has Cinna come up with one for her.
3. Characters were generic/unrealistic
a. Johanna (was that her name?) just got attention by dropping her clothes 24/7. Who actually does that? I know some girls are desperate for attention, but I've never seen one do this.
b. Cinna often said things that were completely out of character for him.
4. Ridiculously stupid plot twists and additions
a. The solution to everything was a kiss.
b. Katniss and Peeta are forced into "marriage".
c. Peeta then claims that Katniss is pregnant.
i. I literally laughed out loud when I read this part. Once you drop the "I'm pregnant" bomb, it's almost guaranteed that I will lose interest in the story.
ii. How is this supposed to help them? Being "pregnant" at the age of seventeen is not going to help your image.
d. The plot was practically the same as the first book.
5. Everything seemed fake
a. They played up everything for the camera. I felt like the entire book was a complete lie, which didn't hold my interest. I only continued reading because it was for a project.
6. Bad pacing and writing style
a. Collins continued over-using fragment sentences.
b. Descriptions were often written in such a rushed manner that the picture in my head was incomplete
c. Collins spent far too long on the rising rebellion. I understand there's an uprising, Suzanne Collins - you don't have to spend 150 pages describing it.

Yeah, I really don't understand why they're so popular. It's not like the idea hasn't been written before, either.
I prefer the Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins. And I agree with Acacia. They were decent and entertained me for the few hours that took me to finish them both. And that's really all I care about on books.
I started reading Gregor the Overlander, but I never got to finish it. I can't remember why...

Me too! Tempted was left on the biggest cliff hanger ever!

Agreed. I liked them.

Why don't you read them? It's not like you would hate them all.
I like the Hunger Games. I thought it was very good. I liked the character and the plot.
I'm not trashing people who like the Hunger Games - that's just my opinion on them.
Maxy, you described the Hunger Games pretty well. I have the same opinion.
Krista said: "I prefer the Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins. And I agree.."
The Underland Chronicles were good, I agree.

I've never read the Hunger Games. I've really debated it but I'm not sure...
I wasn't sure about them, either, but I thought they were good.
Good to know. I'll get them from the library eventually.

o.O I LOVE The Hunger Games series!!! Mockingjay comes out in two months. (:
I haven't read HoN. I've heard it's a bestseller and that it's really good, but then I've also heard from kids who have read it that are actually teenagers that it's not all that great. But then, there are always those who hate a bestselling series just BECAUSE it's a bestselling series, so I say there's always something to be said about having your own opinion on something. So, that said, I probably will read the first one, but I've heard that there are going to be like 17 books in the series or something like that. o.O I'm not really sure. But if I do end up liking it, I'd rather it be a completed series so I don't have to wait a year or however long it takes for the next book to come out (I seriously have astoundingly horrible timing with these kinds of things...) just to have to reread the series all over again. But, at a later date, I will read the first one if not to see just what the fuss is all about. (:
