Becky (beckyofthe19and9) So I'm just curious what the peeps here are reading! Feel free to share what you're reading and keep us updated!

I'm currently reading an ARC of The One That I Want: A Novel by Allison Winn Scotch, which I got for review. It's very different than I thought it was going to be, but so far it's pretty good. :)

message 2: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I'm forcing myself to read Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace, for another GR group. I was stuck at the emergency veterinary hospital for hours yesterday and it was the only book I had with me, ugh. I'm hoping it'll get better.

For pleasure I am reading A Room Swept White by Sophie Hannah.

message 3: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I've heard a lot of good things about Infinite Jest, but it's such a commitment! Even for me, and I love long books.

You're not digging it, huh? =\

message 4: by Dung Beetle (last edited Jul 14, 2010 05:14AM) (new)

Dung Beetle (dungbeetle) | 79 comments I'm reading David Brin's The Postman...at least, I'm trying to. I've been too busy to even pick it up for days. A shame, because it's really good so far.

message 5: by Erick (new)

Erick Burnham | 42 comments I am reading The Dark Tower (Dark Tower, #7) by Stephen King which is the only Stephen King book I haven't completed yet. It will be a bittersweet moment when I finish and there is nothing left to read. At least until a new book comes out.

message 6: by Scott (new)

Scott | 401 comments I am reading Blockade Billy by Stephen King now. I just started it this morning and it is good so far. I think he has really got language of the third base coach down to a tee.

message 7: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments My sister just loaned me a copy of "The Time-Traveler's
Wife" - A book I've long wanted to read -- btw - I LOVED "Infinite Jest!"

message 8: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments Thanks, Jo -- As I mentioned, I've wanted to read it for ages!

message 9: by Jason (new)

Jason Slovak (joeysdad) | 5 comments I'm reading Under The Dome now and next will be The Count of Monte Cristo.

message 10: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (stacieh) I'm reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows for the familiar, comfort value. I don't have a lot of time for reading (or sleeping, laundry, food, etc) since work is crazy busy right now.

message 11: by Nicholas (new)

Nicholas Beck | 6 comments I just finished reading Cake by Michael Edwards.

Cake Cake by Michael B. Edwards Michael B. Edwards

I like it...and I don't. There's a little voice inside my head that starts whispering "Bollocks, bollocks, pretentious bollocks!" after about 6 pages. (Yes, the voice inside my head is apparently British.)

message 13: by BK (new)

BK Blue (paradoxically) I just started reading Danse Macabre by Stephen King , which is pretty good so far. I was glad to read he was scared by The Blair Witch Project. It gets a lot of crap which I don't think it deserves.
I've watched a lot of horror movies in my time, and it's not easy for one to get to me. That one had me sleeping in my mother's bed. lol

I am reading The Girl Who Played with Fire. I just love these books so far!

message 15: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 701 comments I am reading Stories: All-New Tales. I had started The New Annotated Dracula but it's a massive undertaking and i currently need something lighter.

message 16: by Bondama (last edited Jul 15, 2010 07:18AM) (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments Angie - The Millennium Trilogy is astonishingly good. The whole trilogy is something that has apparently made these three books the MOST popular books in the world! Even more interesting is the backstory about Steig Larsson himself. Did you know that, after delivering the manuscript of the three books, he dropped dead of a heart attack on a flight of stairs? There is hope for a fourth book, though ... apparently he left a completed manuscript with his lady.

message 17: by Felina (new)

Felina I'm reading The Passage. Very good so far. I've heard a lot of people comparing it to The Stand. Which means I'll probably be reading The Stand next.

message 18: by Carson (last edited Jul 17, 2010 02:56PM) (new)

Carson | 2 comments I'm readingJourney to the Centre of the Earth by jules verne and Dangerous Girls #2: The Taste of Night by R.L.Stine. I plan on reading The Hobbit: Or There and Back Again by J.R.R. Tolkien and then his The Fellowship of the Ring. Then continue with his whole series. I will come back to reading Stephen King books like Cell.

I have read both and I don't get why everyone's so eager to compare them---they're not very similar at all, in my opinion, or only similar in the sense that they share the themes of "Armageddon" and the post-apocalypse world.

message 20: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm currently reading I Am Number Four, which is an ARC that I have to ship to the next person who is to receive it by Tuesday, and The Passage, which I am really liking so far. I wouldn't compare it so much to The Stand, because the time span is so much longer and there are major differences, but I can see certain similarities as well... But then I'm only about 1/3 into it so far...

I am Number Four is pretty interesting too though. I'm reading some good'uns. :)

message 21: by Katniss (new)

Katniss (katniss1986) Just started The Stand. :)

message 22: by Abdullah (new)

Abdullah Qurban (Mrdevano) | 2 comments i'm currently reading Duma Key and certainly loving it from the heart.

and next i'm going to read Cell.

message 23: by William (new)

William (wmcc) I have just finished Nightshift and loved it. im now 1/2 into Heart shaped box which has been good so far.

message 24: by John (new)

John Anderson | 3 comments Reading War&Peace. It's good but it's taking awhile (because it's War&Peace) and I couldn't put off reading Under the Dome anymore so I'm reading that also.

message 25: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments How well I remember the epic struggle that "War and Peace" presented to me - I had to read it for a class (tho it was assigned summer reading) It says something that, after all these years, parts of the book stay with me with some effort, whereas I can remember almost ALL of Dostoyevsky's "Brothers Karamazov" with no effort at all. (read at the same time, for the same class)

BonFire, is there a new edition of Danse Macabre out with a new foreword or something from SK? You mentioned the Blair Witch Project and I know I read this book a long time before Blair Witch came out. I would love to read an updated version.

message 27: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments I'm working on Four Past Midnight by Stephen King and after I finish the Langoliers in that, I plan on starting The Passage by Justin Cronin.

message 28: by Regine (new)

Regine I'm working on Jane Eyre. Great read so far.

I believe that the book was updated and rereleased a few years ago.

Actually, that book that y'all keep posting in this thread is the new edition of Danse Macabre, released early this year.

message 32: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 701 comments I own the old edition so I sat in Borders and read the new introduction. Interesting, maybe I'll buy it if my copy ever falls apart, but I've only read it once.

message 33: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments That's funny, Rachel -- My copy is the original, but I think I've read that book at least 5 times! -- "Danse Macabre" - like "On Writing" can sometimes feel like having a conversation with my favorite Uncle Stevie~

message 34: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments Langoliers was amazing! Loved it! I plan on starting The Passage by Justin Cronin tonight.

message 35: by Brandon (new)

Brandon (brandonsears) Started "The White Road" by John Connolly - loving the Charlie Parker series. However, I've got The Shining and The Dead Zone on my shelf for future reads (only started reading King this year).

I'm also listening to the audio book of "On Writing.." which has been excellent so far.

I plan on hitting up a book store next week when my wife and I take our vacation to Prince Edward Island - pick up some goodies (including the above mentioned "The Passage")

message 36: by Susan (NY) (new)

Susan (NY) Right now I'm reading The Strain by Guillermo Del Toro, loving it.

message 37: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments Susan - that's a FANTASTIC book - a whole new window on the "story of the vampire" --- Did you know that it's the first in a planned trilogy?

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm re-reading The Graveyard Shift on audiobook. I just finished Misery (again haha)

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Jo wrote: "I'm reading In the Miso Soup"
favorite book hands down! I've re-read the unabridged version at least 7 times, my copy is falling apart.

message 40: by Regine (new)

Regine I'm reading Interview With the Vampire. Easy, fast paced read so far.

message 41: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 701 comments Do you like it? I'm a fan of Anne Rice but always liked the Mayfair Witch series better. I think her vampires are kinda whiny.

message 42: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments "Interview with a Vampire" is the ONLY book Anne Rice ever wrote in her entire life that's worth the ink it cost to print the pages.

message 43: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments Bondama wrote: ""Interview with a Vampire" is the ONLY book Anne Rice ever wrote in her entire life that's worth the ink it cost to print the pages."

Sorry, Bondama. I entirely disagree. I haven't read everything yet, but I love all of the Vampire Chronicles, especially Queen of The Damned (disregard the movie completely!) :)

message 44: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 701 comments Queen of The Damned is my favorite Vampire Chronicle, they did screw up the movie, although i like Aaliyah in it.

message 45: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments Rachel wrote: "Queen of The Damned is my favorite Vampire Chronicle, they did screw up the movie, although i like Aaliyah in it."

With no disrespect to Aaliyah...the movie became a means to show her off and not an adaptation of the book, which was amazing! Very disappointing!

message 46: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments But Kathy, don't you think she gets so totally drunk on her own words that she completely drowns the narrative?

I agree with you Kathy 100%. The whole movie feels like a flashy music video while the book did not. I also feel the book, with it's multiple storylines converging on one point, is more difficult to adapt than other more linear stories. Even I watched the end of that movie anf thought, who the hell are all these people and why did they just show up at the end? I understand in an adaptation you can't include everything but you can't just stick important characters who have their own backstories and motivations in at the end. I had this same issue with the Eclipse movie but don't read Twilight so i cared about it less.

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 665 comments Bondama wrote: "But Kathy, don't you think she gets so totally drunk on her own words that she completely drowns the narrative?"

She's definitely not my favorite author, but I love the vampire chronicles! :)

message 49: by Chris (new)

Chris (cnam) | 28 comments I'm halfway through American Gods by Neil Gaiman and thoroughly enjoying it. This is my intro to Neil Gaiman and I'm definitely gonna read more of his books.

I really loved that book. Shadow is a great character. If you want, "Monarch of The Glen" is a short story in Fragile Things that features the same character and is really good.
