message 1: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Is it just me, or do you rarely see people of color at GR? What do people make of this? Comments?

message 2: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) I am Colombian ... now you are making me feel like the odd girl in the room ... LOL

message 3: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Well, you're my favorite Columbian, Lorena, if it makes you feel better...I'll put on some Old Crow Medicine Show in your honor (you like them, right?).

message 4: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) LOL Do you even know any other Colombians? Please don't say Pablo Escobar or Juan Valdez ... ;o)

message 5: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) BTW it was one of my "white" friends who told me about this site ... He he he

message 6: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Damn. Busted.:)

message 7: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) RA I am sure there is a study somewhere that tells you which races read more or less, and some crazy person developing a conspiracy theory saying that there is not enough books or access to them for minorities, but in reality the love for books and learning should begin at home.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm Hispanic.

And don't you have anything more mundane to think about than this, RA?

message 9: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 78 comments Lorena, I'm not so sure it's a question of a particular race reading more, but who has the most access and time to devote to the internet.

message 10: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Oh, I see ... in that case this place should be filled by the likes of me ... all we do is have babies and stay at home doing nothing ... LOL

Kidding aside, I know that computer knowledge and the language barrier are really big problems in the Latino community here in Georgia, regardless of the level of education the immigrants had in their native communties.

message 11: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Gus, you should hear the mundane thoughts running through my mind...would put you right to sleep:)

I was curious...I didn't have any hidden theories or agendas. Is asking this question so wrong or dangerous?

message 12: by Varmint (new)

Varmint are you now, or have you ever been caucasoid?

i am swedish. doesn't get much whiter than that.

message 13: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Maybe is just the threads one belongs to that appeal to a race more than others, because if you look at the "meet people" space there is a good variety of colors and flavors there ... ;o)

message 14: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Huh. I don't know if I agree with you, Donna. Take a look at, say, the list of "who's online" at any given moment, and way more than 8 of ten are white (assuming their avatars are accurate).

I found the census breakdown...interesting.

http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A076215...

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Trust me, RA, I rock myself to sleep with mundane thoughts. Like, do cannibals have recipes? And, if so, do they share those recipes with other cannibals?

message 16: by Lorena (last edited Jun 24, 2008 12:37PM) (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Gus! ::LOL::

message 17: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony I just looked at the "who's online" list and it looked like, of the people who had avatars, about two of fifty weren't white...but then again, I wouldn't have thought Lorena Columbian, so it's not exactly a scientific approach...

message 18: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony That reminds me, Gus, I have to post something in the unclassifiable thoughts thread that you might like...

message 19: by Varmint (new)

Varmint try looking at the profiles late at night. there's a strong contingent from the middle east, south east asia, and india who are asleep right now.

but i still think the break down will lean white. the internet is still a western phenomenom.

message 20: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Yeah, that is how we sneak up on you RA.

BTW ... The other day we were at B&N and my daughter was filling up a form and asked Mami: What am I, Am I latina or White or None of the Above?
To which I answered whatever you want to be today, sweetheart, and got the dirtiest look from the old lady in front of us in line.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

I love getting dirty looks from crackers...

I was at a Costco some time ago, checking my items out. The cashier looked at my membership card and said, "You must cook some good rice and beans."

At first, I didn't really catch her comment, and then I realized she said something so incredibly stupid. What a generalized statement.

I was tempted to make an equally insensitive generalized stereotype remark -the cashier was black - but I thought better of it. One thing I simply won't do is return a racist comment with another one.

message 22: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 78 comments I like to check Pacific Islander on any sort of ethnicity form. I figure the world could use more Pacific Islanders.

message 23: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) I have gotten comments about other Latinos in a negative way from people who don't realize I am also a Latina, it is always such a pleasure to give a very polite statement and then add, by the way I am a "beaner too", he he he ...

message 24: by RandomAnthony (last edited Jun 24, 2008 12:57PM) (new)

RandomAnthony We have a Mexican restaurant in town called "Beanie's". I wonder what the Latinos around here think of that.

message 25: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) and that will be your contribution to the world Logan ... Who gave us all these weird names (Pacific Islander, African American, Hispanic) anyway?
You call a black person in my country African-Colombian and they would be extremely offended we are all Colombian, that is it.

I was born in Hawaii, and was soooo disappointed as a kid to learn that wasn't enough to make me truly Hawaiian.
Rats.

message 27: by Ruth (new)

Ruth I am half Italian. How come I don't get to call my self Latino?

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Good on ya Lorena! I mark all sorts of things myself. I'm Native American, Greek and Irish...but I just put all sorts of things. By now, most everyone has a little bit of something or other in this country...how do we even know what smidges are in there? I say have fun with it!

Oh, and RA, maybe your question should be, "Why don't more people of color hang out in our goodreads group?"

message 29: by Rusty (new)

Rusty (rustyshackleford) If you're suffering from white guilt, you can take comfort in the fact that I'm 1/32 Native American. 31 more of me and we would have one entire Native American. See, the place is looking more colorful already.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm 1/4...so we only need 3 more of me Rusty!! :)

message 31: by Summer (new)

Summer (summerbp) I'm 1/16! Add me into the mix!

message 32: by Summer (last edited Jun 24, 2008 02:06PM) (new)

Summer (summerbp) And HOLY CRAP! Lorena, you and I are practically neighbors! According to Goodreads, we're 13 miles apart!

Finally, another person from GA!

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey RA, isn't Shat in GA?

message 34: by Summer (new)

Summer (summerbp) I think he's in Birmingham.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, sorry...I'm not good at Southeast, I get it all muddled. :(

message 36: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 24, 2008 02:20PM) (new)

Actually, most of the East side all together makes my geography education a scandal! (East of Texas is East for me by the way.)

message 37: by Summer (last edited Jun 24, 2008 02:27PM) (new)

Summer (summerbp) Haha...It's okay. North of Virginia is East for me. I don't really think of the South as the East.

message 38: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Yeah, I want to say Kirk/Shat's in Alabama for some reason...but close. Poor guy always feels on his own in the south...

Feel free to revise my questions any way you'd like, Amelia...I trust you:)

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, the South as in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico etc... I get all that, I guess it's South and Southwest huh? I told you, scandalous!

message 40: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 78 comments Hey now, don't go roping the Southwest in with the South. Two very distinct entities. Oklahoma's in the Midwest.

message 41: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Yeah, exactly what are the states that comprise the midwest?

message 42: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony figures Jackie's already on the question...

message 43: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Where'd you get that answer, Donna?

message 44: by Jackie "the Librarian", Cool Star Trek Nerd (new)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 1811 comments Mod
The Midwestern United States (or Midwest or Middle West) is an informal name for a group of north-central states of the United States of America, usually including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.[3] A 2006 Census Bureau estimate put the population at 66,217,736. Both the geographic center of the contiguous U.S. and the population center of the U.S. are in the Midwest.

Sorry, I'm trying to actually work today. So I'm not as Jackie on the spot as usual.

message 45: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Yeah, I guess I would agree with the midwest designation. Ohio was the one with which I wasn't sure, but I'll take Ohio on our team, sure:)

message 46: by RandomAnthony (last edited Jun 24, 2008 03:19PM) (new)

RandomAnthony Really, Jackie, you made us wait eight whole minutes for that response!

No, I could have gotten off my lazy ass and checked wikipedia myself, I just know how much you like looking up those questions:) Thanks, hon.

I love the midwest, by the way.

I would include Oklahoma and Texas as far as cuisine goes, in with the Midwest states. Lots of bland food abounds.

Even Tex-Mex can be stricken with Midwesterness. Velveeta-covered enchiladas, for example.

I have been ordering up a STORM of books, today. I just ordered some manga versions of The Tempest and MacBeth which look really cool.

message 49: by RandomAnthony (last edited Jun 24, 2008 03:22PM) (new)

RandomAnthony Don't you start picking on the midwest, Jackie...you're in dangerous territory...trust me, I could go ballistic on the northwest, all you coffee-swilling, self-congratulatory hipsters...the midwest is way cooler than you coast people realize.

message 50: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony I've had some bad food in Oregon, right on the water...you can find bad food everywhere...
