The Hunger Games (Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins Catching Fire (Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins Mockingjay (Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments One of the best YA series out there right now. It's great for both male and female, as well as teens and adults.

The idea of kids killing each other tends to turn some off from reading the books, but Suzanne Collins handled the story beautifully. This is a great discussion book series, especially if you have kids old enough for the content.

How would society handle a government that takes their children and puts them on display, just to make them fight to the death? Would they submit or rebel, knowing that the consequences for rebellion could be a far greater cost.

Highly recommend the series. Can't wait for Mockingjay to come out this month!

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I am giving my niece my first two to see if she likes them. I think she will.

I love this series. The writing is pretty tight, and the relationships and characters realistic. I can't really say more than Stacia already did, but if you haven't read the first Hunger Games (*clears throat* Heather), you need to now! :P

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments LOL!

Oh, and I just have to say - TEAM GALE!!!!!!!! I just hope he gets a whole lot of screen (or page) time in Mockingjay.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments I didn't think I would like these ones, but I couldn't turn the page fast enough and am really looking forward to MockingJay.

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments TEAM PEETA =p

(:

I wish that Katniss's sister played a bigger role in the books, =/. After The Hunger Games I thought she'd play a kind of large role in Catching Fire, but she was barely there. Hopefully she'll have more page time in Mocking Jay.

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I loved The Maze Runner! I wouldn't say there are no kids being killed though. It racks up quite the body count. Some deaths we don't see, but hear about, and some are right in your face.

I loved the mystery and headgames aspect of it. I know some people that really hate that part though. If you don't like cliffhangers, then The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner aren't for you. The Scorch Trials (Maze Runner, #2) by James Dashner is the next and I am dying to read it.

I have to say, the slang was really hard to read at first, but by the end I was calling more than one person a klunk head. :P

message 14: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I preordered Mockingjay last March and I believe it'll be released on August 24th. I'll probably drop what I am currently reading and start on Mockingjay. Since this is the last book in the trilogy, I hope that there won't be many loose ends. As for the Peeta and Gale issue, I don't think that there will be a resolution that will please me. I just don't want either one to be killed off. Especially Peeta. Peeta has sacrificed so much, he deserves to live and maybe marry the mayor's daughter.

message 15: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Mine was pre-ordered as soon as it became available too! I won't be reading it until the long weekend because my 2 girlfriends and I are getting rid of kids and husbands to read it together with no interruptions! I will have to stay away from spoilers!

I'm with you Paula on the Peeta and the mayors daughter. They just seem to be made for each other.

I finally started it. I think I remember why I put it down before. Making kids kill each other didn't seem like a fun read. However, I can already (18 pages in) see why teachers use it class. Discussions on sociology, politics, economics... Plus, I'm sure there's plenty more I'll come across as I read. I'll keep reading since I trust you Carrie. I'm sure I'll enjoy it and get into it.
Also, naming a male character Gale is confusing. I'm having to force myself to think male. =)

message 19: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Hahaha, yeah I know. What about the name Peeta. I keep thinking I should stuff some chicken in him, lol. Never mind, that sounds messed up.

Yay, you started it! At least you don't have to wait a year for Mockingjay. I haven't even read the synopsis for it. I want to be surprised.

Okay, you guys mentioned team gale and team peeta. i just assumed the games would still be going 3 books in for some reason. does that mean the games are over by the beginning of book 2?
I think it's pretty obvious as to what their strategy will end up being and how the games will end. It's being foreshadowed like crazy.

It's good so far. The games are just beginning.

message 21: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments The game that they are in during book 1 is finished by the end.

message 22: by Heather (new)

Okay. Just figured the whole Gale thing gave something away. Well...the team thing in general gives a lot away.

message 24: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments I wasn't going to buy this newest book and be a good girl and wait my turn for the library copy, but in the paper yesterday Target has it listed for 12 bucks and change, so I guess I will splurge and by it.

***Spoiler***

Honestly, I remembered the whole Team Peeta comment so I knew he still had to be alive. But, I figured she wouldn't kill off her narrator, so Kat was still alive. It's pretty easy to assume from the foreshadowing that they'll band together somehow, but knowing that Peeta makes it into future books proves he'll live. Knowing Gale comes back in and there are teams means the girl will live as well. Meaning they're going to tick off a few people in the capital. I'm assuming they'll just refuse to kill each other at the end, but other events could happen.

message 26: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments Woah. All that from the teams. O.o

message 27: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Not really. It's a bit more complicated than that, but I don't want to say so I don't ruin things. Put it this way, some people are fans or *teams* of certain characters, but that doesn't mean that we know certain people live, or that certain people even really play a big role in the books. LOL. We have hope, that is all.

message 28: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod

Okay, a rules change. That dos influence how the end result comes about. It also reassures me that the end will be what I'm assuming. I wonder if they'll explain why they changed it. I think I know why, but we'll see.

I liked it. I think it would have been more suspenseful for me if I hadn't known who would live or die. (Don't worry, it wasn't just here that let me onto it. Someone's review of Catching Fire popped up on my home page and they were the first ones to give it away by listing the character names.) It's a good story with a lot of action and drama to keep the readers interest. It never really let things get too dull.

***Spoiler***Hunger Games

The President screwed himself and now doesn't want to admit it. Those in charge had to have seen that the populace was rooting for the couple. I think if they made them turn against one another it would have been bad PR. If they put the 2 in the position to kill each other then they risked putting themselves into the position of forcing the two into a corner. People don't always do what's expected of them when that happens. They could have refused (although, with Peeta being injured that would do no good). Or, they could both choose to die. I saw it from early on. Either you had to let both win, or go without the medicine and make her watch Peeta die. All the other options had the potential to backfire. Especially after Peeta had already defied them by placing flowers on the little girl. Although, the author fails to explain why that's such a huge stab at the rulers. She also failed to tell us how Thresh died. There was one more spot where I felt the author had missed some detail, but I don't remember what it was at the moment.

I don't know why it's so so shocking, but have you ever noticed how sometimes wisdom comes from the place you least expect it? The odd person, the drunk, the one you never assumed was intelligent enough to begin with? Sorry, reading about Haymitch right now. =) I'm hoping more details of his past will be revealed. Although, it seems like Collins is hinting that she will.

So, I decided to pre-order book 3 even though it comes out tomorrow. I made the mistake of scrolling through the page quickly, but because I read so fast I saw something that gave away book 2. I wasn't trying, I just tend to pick up key words. Go figure. I'm not having luck with this series and spoilers. Although, being on page 160 I'm curious as to when this said event is going to take place. I guess there's still plenty of time. I keep waiting for it and then getting confused that it's not happening. (I'm trying to be vague here, but those who have read it have probably figured out where I'm going with this.) Anyway, like I said about the Shifter series: Men who only concern themselves with political maneuvering and not the lives of the individual are morons. (See, I went childish there...)

Hmm...Never mind. I spoke about 15 pages too soon.

I haven't even read the synopsis yet for Mockingjay. Wait, I think I mentioned that already. Anyway, I have friends that have been reading ARCs for the past month or so and they all loved it. I haven't read their reviews though even though they aren't supposed to contain spoilers. I don't want to know anything about it!

***Spoilers***Mockingjay p 226

I can't believe that Peeta's a little crazy. I expect it to some extent, but not in the sense that it is in the book. I really liked what Katniss did at the mines. I can't believe she got shot though. I wonder how that was received on television.
As a history teacher I try to stress the issue of how effective propaganda really is. I think this book proves it in a manner which is easier to understand. I can talk about Napoleon and Mao and all the other rulers who have put their own spin on things, but this is more accessible.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments I just finished Mockingjay. It definitely had a different tone than the others.

I agree with you Heather about Peeta.

I don't know what I think about the ending. It was a little bit of a downer. I really wanted Katniss to have a HEA, a fairy tail ending, but the ending is one that is much more realistic and rings true.

***Spoiler***Mockingjay

In a world of so much death it was very much on the more realistic side. I wanted the happy uplifting ending too, but I'm glad that it was kind of tempered because of the circumstances in book 3, it wouldn't have been as believable. People died, others were severely messed up emotionally and mentally,... "And they all lived happily every after," just wouldn't work.

message 48: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I've had Mockingjay for a while, but have no desire to read it. I will eventually read it, but after viewing the comments I've lost the urge to read. I even bought 2 Mockingjay bookthongs when I was anticipating the arrival of Mockingjay. The bookthongs are pretty in their own right, though.
