The History Book Club discussion

Music has played a dynamic role in history from medieval times to the present day. It is fitting that in a History Book Club that we pay tribute to an art medium that gives everyone such pleasure and has done so through the ages.

We have set up numerous threads on various musical genres. If you do not see a genre which you think you would like to find because it is favorite of yours or you like that kind of music. By all means, suggest the name for that thread and the topic to be discussed and we will consider adding it for you.

If there are other musical threads which you would like to have added, this is the thread to jot down your suggestion. We will consider all suggestions.

I would love to see you pick some books for us to follow and discuss, after all this is goodreads.

How about threads on lyricists, songwriters, or piano?

That sounds really good too. Well we will really try to do just that. I will look into setting those up.

May I suggest a thread to share our favorite film clips and those odd gems that are out there.

Are we talking about movies or music. If movies I would be happy to set up another thread.

I think we are adding these to each thread depending upon the genre. Please feel free for example to add Metal ones to the Metal thread and so on.

Hi Bentley, may I suggest a "French Music" thread?
Just please don't call it Chanson since there is so much else going on.
Reducing it to Edith Piaf, Maurice Chevalier and Jacques Brel and their followers would not do justice to the very vibrant and diverse music scene the country has to offer.

Hi Bentley, how about a Brazilian, or maybe better a South American thread. We could even include Caribbean, maybe Reggae, but certainly the vibrant Brazilian music scene!!!

Some good ideas; will get to them later today or tomorrow.

I'm wondering if one or more threads might help with music that is not quite rock and not quite pop.

One might be Singer-Songwriter:

We've got songwriters - Bentley could change it into Singer/Songwr. - but Indie's a good thought.

I overlooked the Songwriter category and once I looked at the posts I realize that it is full of what I think of as Singer-Songwriters, i.e. singers who write for themselves. I guess I thought it was for people like Irving Berlin, Gershwin, Cole Porter, etc. who wrote for others.

I think that the songwriter category is fine. And Bea by all means add Irving Berlin, Gershwin and Cole Porter to that thread. They should have been added long ago for sure.

I think that you are right that we have a bunch of singers who are also songwriters and vice versa whereas Irving Berlin for example would not fit that kind of combination category. That is why I am going to keep the thread name the way it is so that both can fit on the same thread.

So songwriters remain the same so that it can fit both categories. But I will add an Alternative/Indie.

Hi Peter, there is one, called Classical Music.
When you click the Main Music Thread link you get all the different sub-threads, divided on two pages. The first page has the Classical Music thread. Just scroll down a bit, you'll get there.
There are also Mozart, Piano, WOrld of Opera threads and more...

Thanks! I'm new, and at first didn't realize that not everything showed up on the first page. I'll be exploring that. Maybe add one for Bach (or perhaps Baroque?)

I would like to suggest shoegaze and post-rock, as a combined category.

OK, we can add that.

Recognizing there is limited space, but a folder on punk would be an appropriate addition.
So many genres of music out there!

There are but I want to hear about those suggestions and will get to them as I can.

So much overlaps that it is tough to cover them all, isn't it.

I'm really hoping that you could start threads about classical music and musical theatre.

Oh, no worries Jill. I was just browsing through the various discussion topics in the Group and got interested to see what's in the Music section. :)

I could give you some Croatian music. A warning though. Some of the genres might make your ears fall off. :D :D

I would suggest a folder for Musica Tropical. This would include a variety of popular Latin American genre's like salsa, merengue, bolero, bachata and other Afro-Cuban & Puerto-Rican genre's.

A book that I have read on this subject is Salsa World: A Global Dance in Local Contexts a collection edited by Sydney Hutchinson (no photo). It is a collection of essays that examine the history and relevancy of Salsa in various places around the world. The book is part of a larger study in Latin American and Caribbean music.
