Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy discussion

Has anyone else noticed how many books are being set in Atlanta, Georgia? There is KATE DANIELS, the new BELADOR series and I know I have seen at least 2 more recent ones. I just can't remember them right now. Also the new zombie tv series THE WALKING DEAD is there also. Do the writers have a secret hate on for this city? Is there something in the water we should know about and all these writers know something we don't. All I can say is I am staying the hell away from that city. LOL

I've noticed it too. There's another series set in Atlanta but it won't come to me. All I know is driving through Atlanta is one of the most terrifying experiences I've had. No wonder!! But mainly I think that Atlanta is the epitome of Urban, so when Urban fantasy authors are choosing a setting it is likely a top pick.

To be honest, I haven't really notice Atlanta standing out as a setting for UF, but it is interesting you mention this now because I just started an UF book that does take place in Atlanta, Wraith by Phaedra Weldon

That's funny, I was thinking about setting a new idea in Atlanta, and then realized there ARE a few already set there. I was thinking about it because it's a city I have access to as far as research, and I actually like it, not hate it. :) Maybe I'll shoot for Miami instead. LOL

Shut up! I graduated from Lincoln-Way too. Just had my 20 year reunion. Yikes. I didn't go far, we're just south of Frankfort, in Green Garden.

I graduated in 81. Our class didn't have a 20 year one we had a 25 year but I didn't go. My twin brother had died not to long before and I just didn't feel up to answering all the questions about where he was. Maybe I will make it to the next one. I miss living in that area.

Maybe that's where a lot of writers are actually from?

I really didn't notice that until you have mentioned it. Maybe a lot of authors live or have lived in that area. Maybe a few think of it as a great little city.

And a lot of southern cities have a lot of heritage that can be used for paranormal stories also. Urban legends, etc.

someone over on amazon did a paranormal USA list and people could list where various cities series took place in...

Atlanta, GA; Chicago, IL and New York were 3 of the most popular...although Washington state has a few as well

I think where I live would be perfect for a paranormal story of some sort. I mean, it's an old border town where "The Hanging Judge" was hanging people, the Trail Of Tears ran right through it, etc. Lots of history.

That sounds interesting, Catherine. I agree with you, Dee. I don't know why NY would be popular. I don't get paranormal from it.

I grew up in Georgia and live in NY. I don't much get Atlanta. Savannah is much more creepy. As for NY, I think peolple just imagine it would be a place where "different" things could happen. Honestly, a vampire could walk down Madison Avenue with his or her fangs out and nobody would notice unless he or she were wearing cheap clothing.

I would like to see a story set in Washington DC. I don't remember reading one set there. Maybe writers think there are already so many bloodsuckers, and beasts in DC, aka the Politicians. LOL
