Kristi (kristicoleman) This folder is going to be used to do Side Reads. I know that during nominations we get so many ideas for great books that we really want to read, but they aren't always the ones that get picked. So we wanted to offer you a place to get together in small groups and read those books (or any book really). This way, you would still be able to read the book with a group of people and have a place to be able to discuss it. Great Idea, right??

Ok, here are The Rules:

1. Post in the "Side-Reads Discussion Forum" thread if there is a book that you want to read as a side read.

2. Get your group together, and decide what your schedule is going to be, or if you are going to have one.

3. Post in this thread:
>The book you want to read
>The people in your group
>Your schedule

Example:

Our group would like to read:
Moby-Dick or, The Whale by Herman Melville Moby-Dick or, The Whale by Herman Melville
Group Members: Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy, Pluto
Schedule: 50 pgs per week

4. Then we, as your Moderators, will post 2 threads: One for Non-Spoilers and one for Spoilers. Then it's all up to you...

We hope you enjoy getting into your Side Read!

Kristi & Andrea

Kristi (kristicoleman) Our First Side read!! Thanks for posting Loretta!!

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

All of the following is tentative and subject to change based on the group's preference.

Start date: January 2, 2011
End date: March 26, 2011

Readers: Loretta, Andrea, Liza, AM10000, Jen, Trisha, Tasha, Kristi, Madeline Anne

I am basing the following schedule on the edition that I own, which is the Vintage TPB, Pevear/Volkhonsky transation. 551 pages of text.

You'll notice that it looks like I'm skipping some pages, but there are a few blank pages peppered throughout the book, which I'm accounting for below.

I also thought it might be useful to start out slowly, and increase the length of the chapters after a bit, so the first 4 weeks are all ~25 pages long and the remaining weeks are all ~50 pages.

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Tasha Looking forward to this read :)

message 5: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Yay, I'm excited to read this!

message 6: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) LOL, sorry about the confusion on where to post this.

Everyone, since we're going to be using just one thread, it seems to me that it'll probably be very important that everyone keep up (otherwise they might be afraid to check in on the thread to post thoughts for fear of spoilers).

To that end, we should probably err on the side of making the chunks shorter rather than longer, so once we get going, please just make sure to let me know if we should slow down (or speed up, but that seems less likely). I want everyone to keep up, and I think short chunks also allow a lot of time for deep analysis.

Anyway, I'm excited. Only 6 weeks to go! :)

Jason (jasonct) I finished this title recently but would be happy to jump into the conversation from time to time!

message 8: by Jen (new)

Jen (jeninseattle) | 140 comments I am with Loretta, I feel like 50 pages might get to be a little much. Wew can always play it by ear and adjust a little later.

message 9: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Loretta, that was why I suggested labling the weeks, that way if someone gets behind they can just scroll to the week they are on and skip over the stuff they have not read yet.

Maybe when they post their comments they could post what chapters they are commenting on, so no one gets cofused?

Like I said, I'm not sure how this will work, and I am happy to adjust once it all gets started if we see some problems that need to be adressed. We will just have to be flexible and have lots of feedback. I know this is going to be a blast!
