Courting Trouble by Deeanne Git is about Essie Spreckelmeyer. She is 30 yrs. old and is tired of waiting for the right man to come along. She's tired of waiting for God to bring the right man into her life. So she decides to take matters into her own hands. She writes a list of all of the eligible bachelors in her town. She writes down their positive and negatives; she then closes her eyes and and picks one. The man she happened to pick is the owner of a mercantile shop. She decides that she is going to help him out in the stop, and against the man's will, starts the same morning as she proposes her idea. But the man doesn't want to become involved with Essie. She has all sorts of qualities that women should not have. She rids a bike, wears extravagant hats, knows more than she should about business. After Essie had been working in the shop for several weeks, the man asks her if she could watch the shop for a weekend while he travels to a near by town for some business. When he comes back, he not only has supplies, but also a wife! So Essie's plan to marry him had ended. The same day as this happened, Essie meets a newcomer in town, Adam Currington. He's everything she pictured herself marrying. A tall, handsome cowboy with a charming mannerism. She gets him hired by her father to drill oil near town, and visits him every Friday when she delivers lunch. They grow more attracted to each other and agree to court secretly until her father had won the reelection for the mayor's position. Each time they see each other, they become more involved. One day Adam asks Essie to meet him that night near a pond where she likes to fish at night. She meets with him, and looses her virginity. Her uncle, the sheriff of the town, comes across them and brings them to meet with her parents. Her parents are enraged, and the only way to prevent people from talking if her gets pregnant is if they marry. So they agree to marry in a month. The next morning Essie finds out that Adam skipped town during the night. Essie gets another marriage proposal later on in the book, but she thinks that she is ruined. Later on after she thinks about everything and studies the bible, she realizes that she doesn't need a physical man to fulfill her needs. God has everything she could ever want, and that He can heal her of every hurt she has experienced. She decides to depend on God for her needs.
