book about a funny black kid who lies alot and runs from home to find his father who turns out to be his grandfather who is in a jazz band it is a older book at least the setting is.

Is it Bud, Not Buddy ? I remember reading it in about fourth grade, and that sounds kind of like it.

Yeah, sounds exactly like Bud, Not Buddy.
