Winter is here but are you already dreaming of Summer? Welcome to our 'Winter Reading Challenge'

Photobucket

http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7522....
http://www.winterfestival.com.au/

1..Pick a book that has a warm or summery theme on the cover (to make you feel cosy)

2..It's a great time to bundle up and just spend a day reading. Pick a book from your Mt.TBR list!

3..It's International Children's Day on the 1st of June. http://www.care.org/newsroom/specialrepo... Why not find a YA novel or a picture book to read?

http://www.fishpond.com.au/Books/Childre...
http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2807....
http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/yal...

4..With World Environment Day and National Tree Day coming up why not BORROW a book from the libary/friend or pick one out of your TBR list. OR if you own an e-reader why not read a book through it instead? No purchases of books are allowed for this one! ;)
http://www.unep.org/wed/

5..We all love snuggling up in front of the fire to watch our favourite movies, well with the Melb International Film Festival on 21/7 to 7/8 how about choosing a book which has been transformed into a movie. http://www.listsofbests.com/list/5908-bo...

Photobucket

EDIT: #6..sorry, this may have been confusing for everyone and perhaps ill worded....hope this doesn't affect member's selections so far, please don't feel you need to change your choices

6..a) Read a book where a word in the title has to relate to a wintery theme or
b) The chosen wintery word has to begin with a letter from the word WINTER.

http://www.goodreads.com/genres/winter

7..Read an Aussie author's book or books with an Aussie landscape/locale in it.
Just for interests sake this is a good site for reference . http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/3027....

8..Choose a New Release which will be out somewhere in the 3 month period of Winter... either purchase, or borrow from the library and enjoy! http://www.goodreads.com/search?searc...

9..Pick a friend on your GR list and also select and read a book they have read. Never know, you might find something new to enjoy!

10..Curl up beside the fire and grab yourself a book full of suspense or murder! You might even spook yourself if it's rainy and windy and there is a murder going on within your book! http://www.goodreads.com/search?q=murder...

Photobucket

(this is Cradle Mountain in Tasmania)

Now a bonus for those who like an extra challenge...go to this site http://www.famouswhy.com/Born_Today/M... ... and find an author who was born in either June, July or August, then find a book written by said author :)

Maggie Hi Brenda,

Maybe I am just really tired after a hectic shift, but I dont quite understand what you mean for us to do for number 6.

Do I just find a book whose title starts with either a W or I or N or T or E or R? Or does the title have to have some connection with winter ie have ice, wind, snow etc as a word in the title? Or does the title have to start with a letter from the word WINTER and have some connection with winter too eg wind, ice, rain???

message 3: by Nikki (last edited May 14, 2011 05:46PM) (new)

Nikki (nikkiholly) 1..Pick a book that has a warm or summery theme on the cover (to make you feel cosy)

I am debating on The Dead-Tossed Waves (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #2) by Carrie Ryan or The Candidates (Delcroix Academy, #1) by Inara Scott

Jacinta Hoare | 62 comments Ok winter hit Cairns this week - night time temperatures plummeted to 15C and we had to put a blanket on our bed so the seasons are telling me things. (However the weather watcher at our house advises me that winter will be over by Wednesday).

Looking forward to thinking about some cool weather books :)

15C in Cairns?? That is unheard of!!!! We visited there last year, and loved it, and the consistently warm temperatures! Good luck with your book choices Jacinta :)

5. The Hunger Games (in preparation for the upcoming movie)
6. We Need to Talk About Kevin

I didn't read the entire list thing. I only read '.Read a book with a word starting with the letters of WINTER in the title' and We stated with a W. might think of something else.

message 17: by Luke (last edited Aug 29, 2011 08:36PM) (new)

Luke (ljuke) I'm going with a crime theme this time around. And I'm including a Chandler novel, a la Knowledge Lost.

1 The Shark Net by Robert Drewe
2 Hard Revolution by George P. Pelicanos
3 The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
4 American Tabloid by James Ellroy
5 Farewell, My Lovely by Raymond Chandler
6 White Butterfly: Featuring an Original Easy Rawlins Short Story "Lavender" by Walter Mosely
7 Dead Point: A Jack Irish Thriller by Peter Temple
8 Before I Go to Sleep by S.J. Watson
9 Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets by David Simon
10 The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon

The Shark Net by Robert Drewe White Butterfly Featuring an Original Easy Rawlins Short Story "Lavender" by Walter Mosley Hard Revolution by George Pelecanos The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon Farewell, My Lovely by Raymond Chandler The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Oxford World's Classics) by Arthur Conan Doyle

message 18: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) You won't be disappointed by Raymond Chandler. Interesting James Ellroy choice too.

message 19: by Luke (new)

Luke (ljuke) I've already gone through the Big Sleep & High Window. Big Sleep was so good. I want to read Farewell my Lovely before I see the movie with Robert Mitchum (another favourite of mine). Re: Ellroy, I've almost finished LA Confidential (my first Ellroy) and I'm just stunned. It's like Chandler, but with everything cranked up until the colours start to hurt your eyes and make you feel sick. American Tabloid is one of the highest rated ones on Goodreads, and available at la biblioteca, so I figured I'd check it out.

message 20: by Michael (last edited May 15, 2011 12:10AM) (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) I have not seen the Robert Mitchum movie yet, though it is sitting at home waiting for me to find the time.

I do like how James Ellroy takes historical events and writes around that, He did it really well in American Tabloid and even better in The Black Dahlia. I do like how he mixes hard-boiled with espionage in that book.
