Elizabeth is a teenage girl who runs a universe-wide sector of a military-like, magical society she calls ‘Dark’. She is the type of girl who can handle herself in a fight: fist, knife, or magical. She learned the first two forms of combat growing up in a rough neighborhood with her two older brothers. Their parents passed away three years ago, in 1979, leaving Elizabeth to inherit her father’s rank.
Now, to save her friends, her parents, her brothers and herself, Elizabeth needs to figure out how to deal with a timeline that’s in constant flux. Not an easy task when your memory keeps changing along with your own past.
To make matters worse, her oldest brother, who doesn’t know magic exists, starts to suspect that Elizabeth’s keeping secrets from him.

We are about to publish the celebrated Jan Morris's Hav and I have some left-over ARCs to give away. If you come join the NYRB Book Club and say hi on our greetings page, I'll send you a free copy (US only). I've been struggling to categorize Hav , but it's an invented visit to an invented city that has seen a melange of cultures through the centuries and at the current moment is a troubling symbol of an uneasy future.

Now ready to publlish--THE WEBS OF VAROK is the second book in my completed five-book science fiction series. In 85,000 words, it tells the story of a quixotic microbiologist, her young daughter, and their alien family partners--a sassy, aquatic elll and an all-too-humanoid varok--who retreat from the ailing 21st Century Earth to the safety of the steady state society on nearby planet Varok. They hope to prove to Earth that the future can be secured in a no-growth environment. They are appalled to find Varok's economy disrupted by a ruthless traitor, a varokian beauty who also triggers a crisis of trust in the family. During a tangle of interspecies conflict and intrigue, an insult-loving insectoid helps the family build on their faith in each other so Tandra can outwit and expose the traitor. The Travelers - Evacuation
Hi. My novel, The Travelers – Evacuation, has finally been published by BookBaby, an eBook publisher. It’s a full length (120,000 words) Science Fiction adventure that blends hard SF with metaphysics, threading two tales together that suggest how we create own reality.
Two interwoven tales affect the destiny of a planetary population: a world leader's tenacious and concealed reliance on extrasensory abilities to govern a planet jeopardizes her position and challenges the sanctity of all she holds dear; generations later, her great-great-great granddaughter's personal search for courage pits her obvious physical accomplishments against her own unspoken paranormal gifts—the true source of her talent.
When scientists verify that the planet has a rapidly decaying orbit and within three generations will be uninhabitable, Senior World Councilor Tevaha, against all conventional wisdom and a covert high-level conspiracy, utilizes intuitive and psychic gifts, understandings of the Laws of the Universe, and a benevolent other-dimensional group of mentors to generate a potential solution to her planet's crisis. Five generations later, Tevaha's namesake descendent Teva, a young superstar architect, devotes every waking moment to the furious design of twenty-four Spaceports—receptacles for ships destined to evacuate the entire population. Mission successfully accomplished, Teva realizes her professional drive has left voids of family, relationship, and emotion—an awareness that hits her hard when she boards the last vacating ship and finds she has no more career and, worse, no one to turn to.
The stories of the two heroines counterpoint one another chapter by chapter, merging when Teva discovers a method to seek Tevaha's advice on a pressing issue and finds herself ironically positioned to dramatically alter the existence of the very future in which she exists.
Similar to Lem's Solaris and Crichton's Sphere, where reality manifests through unconscious memories and emotions, The Travelers - Evacuation demonstrates how thoughts and intentions may be consciously applied to create reality, though sometimes with unpredictable, startling, or humorous results. The challenges facing Tevaha and Teva could appeal to avid science fiction and metaphysical readers alike—those seeking not only entertainment, but answers, or at least possible solutions, to similar, perplexing personal and global situations confronting us presently.

Good luck!

The orb is a planet, but it's supposed to have connotations of womb-ness....
Aside from which is better: do you think either is sufficiently professional-looking??
Jason wrote: "I like the second one, Karen. The one on the bottom with the unborn babies inside the glowing orb.
Good luck!"

What sort of book is it? Because the first picture looks more menacing. Like the twins are threatening the planet.

Traci wrote: "I like both actually. Both would catch my eye and look professional. I think the second is slighty my favorite and goes along best with the "womb-ness"look you want.
What sort of book is it? Becaus..."

Traci wrote: "Have you tried a cover with one twin, the human looking one, in the orb and the other outside of it?"

The Toad King: A Soldier's Story
This book seems to be a repeat of a plot told many times, but I wrote this story to ask the question of when does a civilization become too civilized to defend itself from annihilation?
Here is the blurb:
Major John Elliott, U.S. Army, is shanghaied by an advanced alien race in order to teach them the long lost art of war. The only problem is that he isn’t from Special Forces and his crack troops aren’t cut out to be warriors; they faint at the mere thought of battle. But his survival is now intertwined with theirs, and against all odds, he must teach his peace-loving aliens how to defend themselves or else perish with them.
Self-promotion is so difficult. I mean, as an author I have absolutely no credibility in anything I say about my book, because it's my baby and of course it is beautiful! It is hard enough to nerve up to get a friend to read your book let alone asking a bunch of strangers to pony up some hard earned cash to invest in your story. So having said that I will leave my shameless self-promotion to one of my reviewers on amazon.com. Though I have to say that the best review I got was from my college roommate, "Actually finished the book last Thursday evening. You surprised me old man. You are right I do not normally read science fiction, but I actually enjoyed your book. Good job." That was enough validation for me.
So here is an Amazon.com review. There are four other reviews there that you can read if you are interested.
The Toad King: A Soldier's Story is not only a page-turner; its image should be in the dictionary next to page-turner! There are unexpected twists and turns throughout while following the adventures an Army supply officer attempting to teach a pacifist alien race who falls unconscious if you look at them wrong how to fight a war against an invading race. Combined with the strong character development, fantastic dynamics between characters, and great humor, this book is a must read. I can't wait for the sequel!
. . . and no I did NOT pay this guy :)
http://thetoadking.com

The book is an extrapolation of where today's politics are likely to leave us (well, our kids) in 50 years time, and also about what an alien civilization might really want from Earth, and how they'd go about taking it.
For an independent review, see: http://www.pikerpress.com/article.php...
In brief, the review summarized the book as follows:
"The reader is pulled into an all too real future with memorable men and women leading the way. An excellent story with so many possibilities, leaves the reader craving more."
No, I didn't pay her :-) Other reviews (Amazon) say it's a page turner; "couldn't put it down" being a common refrain from people who've read it, and those who have written to me asking "when the hell is Book Two coming out?"
It's on Amazon now as an ebook, and comes out in paperback October 15 (being launched in London then Paris, which is where I live). The sequel, Eden's Trial, is in press and should be out before Xmas. I'm now writing the last book in the series, Eden's Revenge, out September 2012.

Judgment isn't hard SF, though I make every effort to be scientifically accurate. I'm a long-time supporter of NASA and eager to see mankind explore space and other planets/ celestial bodies. But my book is sheer adventure with a dash of mystery and romance ( not the steamy variety! )
Book Two of the Tartarus Trilogy, True Son of Tartarus, will be published soon and should be available online in six weeks or so. I'm now in the process of editing Book Three: Ransom of Tartarus, which should, if all goes well, be available in early 2012.
Reviews of my book are visible on amazon.com, as well as a brief synopsis. I blog about my books, writing experience, and genre literature in general at www.crewofastrella.blogspot.com. Why not give it a read?

I am new on GR so I hope this is an appropriate place to mention my books, which are available on Amazon. If not, I'm sure I'll find out soon enough!
Anyway here goes...
The Night the Aliens went on Strike
When noise abatement officers Colin and Tony investigate a complaint one wintry night, they little suspect the culprits are not of this Earth…
Now, drawn into an intergalactic employment dispute, they must fight to save the world – and sort out a barking dog or two
As Tony did up his laces Consuela Martinez, the most beautiful woman in the world, entered through the wall. This was unexpected, but Racul’s control over their minds had been re-established and Tony felt only mild surprise.
‘I have assumed this form,’ explained Racul, ‘which we found in an image on your communications device. We believe this will help me to pass unnoticed among your people and enable me to observe undetected.’
‘Could work,’ murmured Colin doubtfully, ‘but you might need some different clothes.’
‘These garments are not suitable?’ Racul glanced down at the metallic G-string bikini. ‘You need not concern yourself about the cold. We are accustomed to low temperatures. This is why we chose to visit your planet when your star is at its greatest distance.’
‘It’s not the temperature. People don’t walk about in winter wearing kit like that. You’ll attract attention.’
‘In that case,’ Racul considered, ‘we shall synthesise garments similar to yours.’ She turned to one of the aliens who were observing her new appearance with disdain and gave some instructions. One of them went out and returned about a minute later with a bundle.

The Nameless have superior technology, numbers and a willingness to accept casualties that goes beyond comprehension. Their aim, nothing less than the total destruction of humanity. All that stands in their way, five officers, a handful of ships… and the human need to survive!
Hello all,
That's the blurb for my military science fiction novel The Nameless War. It is a story covering the lead up to and opening weeks of an interstellar war, very much aimed at those who enjoy military and space opera science fiction, and (in my own opinion) combines grand spectacle with gritty reality. Central to the novel is the 'fog of war' and its effect on decision making. The story follows events from the points of view of a number of different individuals, some of whom can influence their direction, while others are swept along by them. There are already a few reviews at the above link and a few more at Amazon.UK. Take a look at the sample and see what you think.

Thank you, I'll try to return the courtesy once I'll work my way through my backlog.

Through the pages of eternity every corner of the universe has searched for motive, causality for the dramatic spirals of infinity, yet the universe holds its secrets well. It was in the lunar month of March, on the 10th day in the human year of 2025 A.D., that a truth lost since the dawn of creation would finally be revealed in the eyes of one man.
Ashton Mortal is a 28-year-old fine arts painter who has been plagued with nightmares since as far back as he can remember, but on March 10, 2025, he awakens in the early morning from a dreamless sleep. Suddenly manifestations very similar to the iconic scenarios depicted in his art become more than imagination, as slowly an epic web of cosmic events spanning beyond the known universe takes hold of what was once a simple life.

The first person to read it surprised the heck out of me with, "Doug, I just finished your book. Absolutely spellbinding! I didn't want to put it down to sleep! I highly recommend it! You are brilliant!" And she even bought it on her own. Now maybe my family will give it a try.
No spoilers from me beyond the official description, but I think you've probably never read anything quite like this. I know I haven't.
The mammoth computer Virgil has run the Earth’s net for more than a decade, protected by the unbreakable Mobius. Virgil has been so successful that the world’s dependence on it has become critical. This worries Hutch Axemeyer. Hutch, the troubled mathematical genius behind Mobius, is enlisted again by the World Security Authority after Mobius is proven to be not quite infallible by two teenage hackers. Susan Lo breaks into Mobius from sheer curiosity. Armand Pryther turns his hacking acumen into shady profits until he takes on the challenge of Mobius. It is perhaps no coincidence that all three were illegal genetic engineering products from a firm that sought to produce financial geniuses. Hutch doesn’t have to wait long to discover why the young prodigies are sent to him to mentor. A new object has come into the solar system and astronomers recognize that it is not the comet it was initially thought to be. Then Virgil has an unauthorized visitor accessing Mobius. Witness an epic mathematical war like Earth has never seen before as Hutch, Susan and Armand learn to Paint by Numbers.

A retired shaman is contacted by the NSA to find out who’s coercing politicians into passing bills that they have fought up until now.
The NSA pulls Dan Johnston out of a comfortable, but boring, retirement to help them with a very unusual case where they believe politicians are being swayed through the internet and the use of totem animals. Dan has known for years that it’s a strange world, but he’s not exactly a tech geek, and has little knowledge of what it is the NSA wants him to do. As a shaman, he’s used to going to other worlds, but not a machine world. So, he does what he knows how to do, he enters through the people being affected.
To make matters worse, his son, Jason, just returned from shaman training, which wasn’t going well at all for him—something about a giant snake. So, he wants his dad to train him. And, Dan’s not sure how to work with the son he hasn’t seen in a while. But this might not be the right time, since people are being shot at and Dan must figure out what is going on before time runs out.

A colony of scientists, a megalomaniac, an alien race...which will prevail?
Brandon and Palmer, soldier and pilot, pitch their skills against a high-profile negotiator bent on taking over an entire planet, which could change the lives of every colonist on it. And why would one man want to do such a thing? To gain control of a secret alien race discovered on C47. It's not about scientific discovery, and it's not about saving an alien race, it's about power and control.
If Garth Killjoy, President of Section 204 of the Intergalactic Peace Force, gets his way he'll have the entire Earth Central government under his control, and he knows it. That means all bets are off when it comes to honesty or fairness when working with the colonists. That's why he sent a fake negotiator pummeling toward C47 in a cruiser filled with explosives.
Before the ship gets blown out of the sky, Captain Palmer Luce ejects and is rescued by a second cruiser. She believes her friend may have gone down with the ship. But Lieutenant Brandon Lockhardt barely escapes with his life...and he's not happy. He can't wait to talk with Palmer to see why she left him behind. And she's heartbroken that he may be dead…

Rogue Planet is now published. Is it hard sci-fi, space opera, or fantasy? Think Star Wars without magic, just high tech. This swashbuckling adventure is written to entertain, but there are some serious themes here. Although set in the same universe as my "Chaos Chronicles Trilogy" and Dr. Carlos stories, the plot is a wee bit orthogonal: A young man must save his world from a despotic theocracy. (Any relation to current regimes is intentional.)
(This will soon be on Net Galley, but you can read it right now for free in return for an honest review. To sweeten the deal, I'll throw in another freebie from my catalog--no review obligation, just a thank you for being a reviewer.)
