Terry brooks, Karen miller and James Barclay are great authors in this genre.

I thought The Lies of Locke Lamora was pretty good. It's a bit swords-and-sorcery but the main characters are thieves and other low lives instead of the usual "peasant who is destined to be a great hero" type. I thought it was quite a refreshing change, but I'm not sure what that says about me.

Much under-rated and not as well-known as they should be are the novels in Alison Croggon's Pellinor series: The Gift (aka The Naming), The Riddle, The Crow and The Singing.

Only superficially similar to The Lord of the Rings, the Pellinor books are a well thought-through sequence involving youngsters who, yes, are "destined to be great heroes", invented landscapes, languages and demiurges. Like LOTR there's not much humour but, if you ignore the academic framing device, great fun.

I'm on my third Terry Goodkind "Sword or Truth" series. They are not exceptionally well written or even close, but are really quite compulsive. They are pretty hefty tomes and there seems to be loads in the series. Endless reading material maybe!?

I've recently finished City of Dreams & Nightmare and I definitely recommend it, even though it is a variant of the "peasant who is destined to be a great hero" type which I mentioned being a bit bored with (see message 3). I have never claimed to be consistent!

robert jorden is a good author for this genre as i am currently reading the eye of the world by robert jorden i am finding it really interesting, but i am reading in small chunks, as well as reading other books at the same time. :)

All of these are good on this thread. I also liked some old and almost forgotton books here too like

A Storm Upon Ulster by Kenneth C. Flint and The Drawing of the Darkby Tim Powers. Both are almost Historical Fantasy, but make no mistake, thier Fantasy novels. Good reads.

robert jordan writes in this genre. im currently reading one his at the moment its called the eye of the world. its a bit long winded in parts im debating whether to give up on it.

White Tiger by Kylie Chan is a great martial art fantasy book I totally recommend this book to everyone

Haven't read any of his newer works but read a lot of Terry Brooks in high school/college.

I am really loving the Dresden Files. Currently reading ghost story so I am nearly up to date with the series. :)
