Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) About how much can you write in an hour, or how much do you write per day? Do you write everyday or just occasionally? How long does it take to write a story from the time you have an idea to the time you write the last words?

Personally, I write 500-800 words in an hour, including the time I take to think. I usually write 1,200 words a week because I only have time to write one or two days a week. Stupid homework

I love to write...coming up with new ideas can be pressing though...

Carole (cbusedtousethis) | 127 comments How much I write per day varies wildly. Sometimes I take weeks off at a time, but during NaNo I write up to 5 or 6000 words a day. I think my words per hour is somewhere around 400, but I'm not sure, because it's been a while since I've clocked it. As far as whole stories, it can be anywhere from one or two days to the mounds of yet-unfinished-but-started-years-ago projects on my hard drive.
In short, I am the world's most erratic writer.

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) to Israel: I find it really hard to come up with ideas too. I can't think of a story on demand - it needs to just spontaneously pop into my head.

to Eva Anne: Well as long as you get some writing done at the end of the day, I don't think it matters :) I know what you mean about taking breaks for a few weeks (or months...hehe). I've been trying really hard to write a chapter of my novel every week this year, because I've never actually finished a novel before. I didn't think it was that hard of a goal to meet, but I found myself taking breaks for a bit because I was too busy or didn't have ideas.

If I really get going, I can type up to 2000 words in an hour. I don't think I've ever done that though.

My fastest speed for getting to 750 words has been 12 minutes, I think.

My writing is very sporadic. Sometimes I'll go for months without writing anything, just because when I actually have time, I am usually wasting it, and it just doesn't occur to me to use that time to write. Which is sad. I want to write more often. I'll try to do that this summer.

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) Wow, that's amazing. You write in 12 minutes what takes me an hour! Somehow whenever I have an idea, I don't have the free time to write, and when I have the time, I don't feel like writing! So far I've been able to write something almost every week.

Well, I was typing really fast. Very stream-of-consciousness. If I were writing a story or essay, there's no way I could write that much in 12 minutes! I might only be able to write 50 words in that amount of time. Of course, it takes me less than a minute to physically type 50 words, but when I have to think about those words...

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) That just goes to show that you've got crazy typing skills! I don't think I could type that fast even if I was trying to do stream-of-consciousness. I've never actually tried doing that before. I mean, I've had to do those "Write for 20 minutes without stopping" things for lit class but that isn't the same because it's usually a reflection on some other work rather than your own organic thoughts.

I used to be really bad at typing back in 6th grade. We had to take a typing test as part of our computers class in both 6th and 7th grade. And somehow I jumped from barely being able to type 20 words per minute to being able to type about 40. Of course I can type about 50 or 60 now. If I really get going, I can even occasionally get up near 70.
