Xperfumex what do you think?

Fatima Not exactly disappointing, but the ending was indeed loosely tied up. Personally, I wanted to know more about what other characters were up to in future like Gale etc, not to mention what future Panem was like...

Alison Well, not to completely put the book down (because the series is by far my favorite series!) but it seemed that Katniss was kind of...depressed the whole book. She just lost her spirit, I guess you could say. The last book kind of disappointed me, especially the epilogue. It seemed like Katniss was only with Peeta because she had to be. I wish it had ended a little differently...

Debra Driza I loved the series but Mockingjay was definitely my least favorite of the three by far.

Laura Stuart I think that Katniss was never strong enough to be the leader of the rebellion anyway. She never chose the life she had and now she is able to make the choices with someone who supports her and loves her unconditionally. I would've liked to have known a little more about the trial though and some of the other characters involved. I also didn't like that they killed off Prim. I think that they could have saved her, injured maybe, but alive.

N.M. Martinez I didn't feel like it was rushed. In fact I felt like it was dragged out and they went on an unnecessary mission that was only to bulk up this third book. By the end, I remember thinking, "What was the point of that?"

And well, I guess that's sort of the point. That war is depressing and senseless and people get hurt. They don't generally choose their sides, sometimes they're just caught up in something they have no control over.

Jeff Vista I liked it. I think the reason it's the lowest rated book in the trilogy: By the time you start the third book, most readers have an idea of how the book SHOULD end. The fact that so many things end up differently and unexpectedly...I think that threw off some readers.

I don't know if "rushed" is the right word...but you did feel that the author was trying to stick to a sort of schedule: 3 parts per book, each about 130 pages; 9 chapters per part; etc.

Tas le Fay Disappointing?

I personally found the ending of Mockingjay OUTRAGEOUS! I was emotionally traumatised (practically!) and all Katniss could tell me was she went to back to D12 and got married withkids in like 1 page????
I was most incensed that there was absolutely NO mention of Gale after their terrible parting! Forgive me for thinking you were SUPPOSED to be his best friend Katniss! As if Prim's death wasn't haunting enough, she had to go ruin all her other relationships!

And I'll never accept Finnick had to die! Because he didn't! His death was the Most unfair of all deaths, in my opinion - EXCEPT Cinna's (that killed me).

I was siriusly tempted to write a letter to Suzanne Collins with vehement and furious complaints. I was crying my stupid eyeballs out from all the disappointment and deaths!

anyway. that was all my pent up feelings...

Lindsey I was upset--the series just got better and better and then wham! Whiny Katniss (can I just say Bella?), Prim dies (it all happened because Katniss stepped forward to save her, and in the end she dies?), the Panem situation hardly gets any better (which I could have dealt with, because a government's change of hands rarely helps anything), Gale just kind of wanders out of the picture for the stupid reason that Katniss can't forgive him for being accidently involved in Prim's death, and she marries Peeta just because--he's there. I get the feeling that Suzanne Collins just lost interest, or tried to be "realistic," or wanted to please everyone, or shock everyone, or something. I don't even know. But the great thing about Katniss was the intensity of her love for her family and her guts and "I can pull through anything" and it ended with her jaded, bitter, and completely disregarding the safety of others in her thirst for empty vengeance. Great message! Ugh.

message 10: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff Vista I think that those with military experience, particularly those who have deployed, can probably better relate with Katniss in this third book. She is essentially going through her THIRD Hunger Games. I noticed a gradual change during my 6 months in Iraq. You DO become fatigued, jaded, bitter...and yes, even whiny. And some people don't recover (aka post-traumatic stress disorder). This is realism, folks.

Bella Street Mockingjay was a disappointment to me, but the first two books built up my expectations to such a fevered pitch, I'm not sure if anything would've satisfied.

There were several deaths that seemed rushed and out of place and I'm solidly Team Gale, so yeah. I also felt the author reverted to a homily about war instead of finishing out the character arcs. I get that the ending was more realistic, but I was reading a book and wanted a strong ending.

Still, this series is outstanding and I can't wait for the films.

Janie It would've benefitted if the author could’ve strayed from Katniss’s tired and strained point of view. I like how the point of view is consistent throughout the books, but here, everything that happened was limited to broken Katniss in the hospital. She is literally in a hole in the ground. We didn’t get to “witness” Peeta’s daring rescue, and missed tons of the aftermath as Katniss mentally goes AWOL. I could hardly tell that Prim had died, she gets some sort of mental breakdown, and narrates as so.

yeah
collins shouldnt have included the epilougue. she should have just ended the series when peeta asks katniss "u love me, real or not real?" and katniss answers "real"

Bella Street @Melissa: PERFECT!!!!

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

thanks bella!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Melissa I hated Mockingjay. Well not completely, but mostly. The ending was pathetic. The first 2 books I would definitely re-read over and over again. Mockingjay will probably never be reopened. Total disappointment, but that's probably because I didn't like the ending and I hated that EVERYONE died off. It was depressing.

COMPLETELY AGREE.

Finnick's death ruined everything for me. Suzanne Collins totally failed with Mockingjay. But I loved the first 2.

message 19: by Adam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Adam Not at all disappointing, but I did find it a bit rushed, but it was still a spectacular ending to the trilogy.

message 20: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa I strongly disagree with most of the opinions on here. I loved Mockingjay and the reason I liked this series was because it wasn't your typical happy ending. How can it be? After all Katniss has been through, she can't "live happily ever after." She needed Peeta because only he can really understand what she went through because he experienced it with her. Although it was sad and obviously a touch depressing, there was hope in the end because Katniss DID have children, something she was always against because now she knows that they can live in a world that is better because of what she has endured. Although it may be disappointing to some, I think that's because it was real and not what you wanted for the character (of course no one wanted Prim to die!) but I think Collins would have done a complete disservice to the series had she given the readers what they may have wanted. Her point was to show that war is cruel and it has lasting effects on everyone who personally experiences it.

Michaela I hated Mockingjay, and by hated I mean it was just not as good as the others. It was like watching Indiana Jones, no plot, all movie. It was just mindless action. She seemed constantly depressed and just went around killing people. And it was just completely insane.

Maya I totally agree with u. It wasn't worth it to me.

yes it was spectacular ending to the trilogy, but still the epilogue sucked.

as i said b4 the trilogy should have ended when peeta asks katniss, "u love me, real or not real," and katniss answers, "real."

Andres Valencia I think the last book was really rushed and I hated the ending.

message 25: by Danielle (last edited Jun 14, 2011 03:42PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Danielle I can't say i particularly liked the sad ending, but if anyone else has read Ms. Collins' Gregor the Overlander seris you will see that it also has an "everything ends up ok in the end but it could hardly be called happy" kind of ending. Because of this and the route that Mockingjay seemed to be taking in the last section I wasn't to surprised when it ended the way it did.

message 26: by Tas (last edited Jun 17, 2011 03:55AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tas le Fay Lisa wrote: "Although it may be disappointing to some, I think that's because it was real and not what you wanted for the character."

Actually, i don't think that's the reason for my own disappointment - although, of course, i can't speak for others. It was actually her way of wrapping up the loose ends which was a major failure in my opinion. As i said before, she completely failed to acknowledge other characters and how their life went on after the war. If she didn't want to tell us then, like someone suggested, she shouldn't've included the epilogue. That was pointless because i didn't learn anything new, apart from the kids, which i didn't think was unexpected anyway. For me, it was just 2 extra pages i went through to find out if Gale reappears in her life and how Panem had become. Obviously i was disappointed.

Veronica Morfi From the moment I pick up a book I'm always hoping for a happy ending, even with these series I always hoped that somehow there will be a happy ending. I guess I was wrong. The ending was a little cynical (or a lot). It was like Katniss compromised for Peeta.
I should have never expected her to be happy after everything that happened, but I did, until they killed her sister, that was when I realized I was wrong. The ending didn't have a hopefull message that I love about every other book. It left me kind of empty, but in the between was so thrilling and awesome that I just love it!

Ellie I loved Mockingjay!! It was great. But I think people were disappointed because everyone expected it to be Twilight! Everyone expected it to be a huge drawn out fight and romance but it wasn't so people were disappointed. It didn't need to be anymore drawn out. And another thing is that people should stop expecting a perfectly happy ending. Prim, Cinna, Rue, and many other characters died in the book. As sad as that was you are not always going to get happy ending in a book or anything else for that matter. So if you are going to go through life expecting great love songs and books with endings that say "And they lived Happily Ever After" you have another thing coming.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

that wasnt the problem, its just that the epilogue just really ruined it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it should have ended [as i have said like 5 xs already] when peeta [grrrrrrrrrrrr, peeta sucks] asks katniss, "you love me, real or not real," and she answers, "real."

Veronica Morfi Melissa wrote: "that wasnt the problem, its just that the epilogue just really ruined it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree!!! That would have been so much better! And it's a nice quote for an ending!

message 31: by Jazz (last edited Jun 19, 2011 11:25AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jazz I felt the ending was rushed. Not the epilogue, that was short and subtle which is fine with me. I felt the aftermath of the war, when she returned to District 12 could been thought out a little more. That would be my only complaint.

message 32: by Nhi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nhi Vo I like the ending actually, XD but it would be nicer if Collins had put in what actually happen to the other characters and Panem itself. I really really wanna know what happened to Gale, I mean they're best-friend, and boom, he disappears from her life. However, I'm glad Peeta and Katniss got married :)and have kids.

message 33: by Em (new) - rated it 3 stars

Em McCowin Jessica wrote: "I read the series and loved them for what they were... After reading the first book i knew there would never be a "happy ending" for Katniss, how could there ever be? As for the deaths, it was a WA..."

I agree! I love all of the books of course, but the epilogue in MonckingJay was....horrible...I mean, its brilliant Katniss has children and loves Peeta and all, but..what happened to Gale? what is the state of the capitol? did the districts dissolve? what happened to the country?! all questions that, if answered, would have made the epilogue better for me.

There is a war going on in the book, and not everyone can survive. Which is probably why she killed off Prim. Heart-wrenching yes, but I felt it added more realism to the story.

I will re-read the whole series a few times over just because these books are...fantastic, but I will always be disappointed in the epilogue.

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

i agree

Megan I didn't mind the ending, it made sense. I had high expectations after the first two books, but half way through Mockingjay I was bored. The first two books built a plot around strong characters that held it together and without them Mockingjay nose dived. Sure, if Katniss was finally going to collapse under the strain of constantly having the rule book rewritten so that she was back to looking at almost certain failure, then Mockingjay needed to replace that central tenet with something else. It was Katniss' strength of character and will to survive that held the plot together, without it the plot fell to pieces.

Madeline the ending was good, i guess but i liked the first two way better

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

same here, but the epilogue sucked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Salena Chavez The last book was okay but i hated the ending!!! She picked the wrong guy!!!

Candace Shockley The first two books were SOOOO much better. This whole book seemed to drag out only to have the end very rushed. Not my favorite book, really had a hard time finishing it.

Anshu Yeah, this one (mockingjay) was my least favourite among the three. I got a little bored in this one.

Nakira The last book, IMO was rushed and I had to reread sections to truly understand what happened. This one paled in comparison to the Hunger Games and Catching Fire.

XD

I would like to respond in the same way, but I'll be spamming! :D So all I have to say is that I agree!
Go Team Gale!!! :D

Madeline noooooooooooo! PEETA!!!!

Veronica Morfi Madeline wrote: "noooooooooooo! PEETA!!!!"

Actually they are both kind of awesome, but I have to say I never really liked Katniss...I don't really know why! :P Looooooved the books though!

Madeline yeah they both are awesome... i don't even know why i like peeta better...

James Allen The underground scenes in the capital city, well, the whole description of the capital left me disappointed.

Seemed like Peeta was chosen because of his loyalty in the first two books. In the end, the choice was up to Katniss and her choice was determined by the author ;)

reeeeeeeeeeeeeealy

message 50: by Kait (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kait I loved the hunger games & catching fire. i loved how the author brought them all back to the games during the second book and everything that happened in those 2 books. The third book was disappointing because of what was going on with Peeta. Peeta's my favorite character and Collins destroyed him in the last book. the ending seemed kind of rushed to me as well. Peeta was angry in the 3rd book and he was normally soo sweet. Other than that I love the trilogy.
