According to Damaris, it's even worse in the second book. I'll see when I read it. Maybe I'll get to it after Graceling.
I never really got to enjoy the discussion on this since I hadn't finished the book at the time of the meeting :(
The most vivid recollection I have is of Perenelle using her powers while trapped in the basement, communicating with the dead and trying to escape the mud-minions. I thought that was a great piece of exposition on the author's part, very cool use of a magic system--it sent chills up my spine!
Scatty's old granny was also very cool. I know we've said it before, but what a pity the younger characters were less well-drawn and likable.
