Thanks for starting this, Kevin. I was just going to do it and saw you'd beat me to it!

message 4: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Nearly finished with Death Masks by Jim Butcher. I think it's my favorite Dresden Files so far :)

Edit: added another one

message 6: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments Just posted my third and final blog post about my summer reads.

I started Foreigner this morning in paperback, which easily transports in my purse with my Nook Color. Next up in hardcover, after I finish The Snow Queen, is The Black Prism.

My current-month shelf displays the rest of my anticipated August reads, including:

Red Mars (Mars Trilogy, #1) by Kim Stanley Robinson Fortress in the Eye of Time (Fortress, #1) by C.J. Cherryh On Basilisk Station (Honor Harrington, #1) by David Weber

message 8: by Isabelle (last edited Aug 01, 2011 02:02PM) (new)

Isabelle (iziezi) I've just started Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale. The first chapter is dark and moody, but beautifully written.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Currently reading A Feast for Crows. The rest of August may go something like this:
A Dance with Dragons
The Wise Man's Fear
House of Chains

Happy reading all

Nice time to read Confessor. Just wondering, are you going to pick up the new one, The Omen Machine when it comes out?

I read the series a few years ago; I'll be curious to know what you think of them. I'm about to go on vacation, so I have all four of Williams' Shadowland books queued up on the Kindle; in the unlikely event that I get through them (if civilization collapses and I'm trapped by the zombie hordes, for example), then I'll also have access to the full works of H. Rider Haggard and a few other goodies.

If nothing else, it's one of the most evocative titles ever.

Melanie Chelsea wrote: "I am still trudging through Devices and Desires and The Pillars of the Earth."

Been there with Pillars of the Earth! Definitely a bit of a slog in places, but I'd say it was worth it.

message 16: by Doc (new)

Doc (triffid) I think after I finish A Dance with Dragons I'll probably read the rest of the Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwall.

Blech. I hated that book. If you want to read a great book about building a cathedral, read The Heaven Tree Trilogy: The Heaven Tree, the Green Branch, the Scarlet Seed. Infinitely better.

Which I am currently reading. Up next: Fortress in the Eye of Time and Mistress of the Empire.

Unfortunately, I fell in love with the mini series, but the book reads a bit strangely. There's some introspection on the part of some of the characters, but not a lot. They just keep on rollin', dead mom or no, and do things that make me go "eh?" You can tell Follett liked Philip the best, since there is a lot of attention put on him right from the beginning. My favorite character in the tv series was Jack, and I hope the novel version of him is as awesome.

message 19: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) Also, thanks for the recommendation, Sandra!

I didn't watch the TV series. In the book, the characters are cardboard cutouts and the cathedral building can be gotten from any tourist brochure on how to build a cathedral. I couldn't bear it. Good luck. A lot of people seem to like it, but I many times differ with the consensus.

message 21: by Mach (new)

Mach | 116 comments I am reading Pillars of the Earth now, i like it so far and will probably finish the book. I am also rereading Magician, it feels kind of juvenile this time and i doubt i will finish it. After that i will read The Dragonbone Chair, The Warded Man, Storm Front and Neverwhere but not exactly in that order.

message 22: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (_shannon) Currently reading "Fevre Dream" by George RR Martin. I'm a huge fan of his ASOIAF series so I thought I would finally give something else of his a try.

message 23: by Alison (new)

Alison DeLuca I'm so behind! But I"m reading Ednor Scardens and TERPS this month, and I want to finish Confessions of a D-List Supervillain as well as In Memory of Greed

If you like George's work, then you should pick up the first Wild Cards book.

message 25: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Finished Death Masks last night. Fun read. :) Still reading Kafka on the Shore. I just got through a really disturbing part, but it's been interesting so far.

Yes, it's the last one.

message 31: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) I'm currently reading The Black Prism. On deck is The Help, Wuthering Heights, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, and The Three Musketeers. I wasn't planning on reading The Help, but there's been so much talk about it that I got sucked in. I requested it at the library but there are 11 holds ahead of me, so we'll see if I actually get to it this month.

message 32: by shinfu (new)

shinfu Lots of good books I hope?

Finished The Help last month for book club. I wasn't completely knocked over by it but it's definitely a worthwhile read, lots of good discussion points if you know someone else who's read it. Good luck getting a hold of it, looking forward to seeing what you think!

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

I am wanting to read The Black Prism, but am unsure whether to buy it or take it out from the library. The only problem is that the library does not have that particular title, and I will have to wait until next month, as the library is waiting to buy it in paperback format. Unfortunately it is not available in paperback until September. I might just have to go ahead and buy it in hard cover.

message 38: by Charissa (last edited Aug 04, 2011 01:39PM) (new)

Charissa Weaks (cweaks) I just finished Making Waves by Tawna Fenske and loved it! Adorable, hilarious romance. It's not Fantasy but I veered off the track a little for a deserving author. I liked it so much I'm hosting a giveaway of 3 copies here on Goodreads :)

message 40: by Hélène (new)

Hélène (hlneb) Currently on the (nearest) shelf for group discussion: Foreigner (Foreigner, #1) by C.J. Cherryh Fortress in the Eye of Time (Fortress, #1) by C.J. Cherryh On Basilisk Station (Honor Harrington, #1) by David Weber The Black Prism (Lightbringer, #1) by Brent Weeks
And also :
Hounded (Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne A Mighty Fortress (Safehold Series #4) by David Weber

message 41: by Tracy (new)

Tracy A. | 79 comments I'm re-reading the complete Kushiel Series (i.e.: Phèdre's Trilogy - for the third time - and Imiriel's Trilogy - for the second time). I read Jacqueline Carey's Naamah's Blessing within 3 days upon delivery and G.R.R.M.'s A Dance With Dragons within 5 days upon delivery. All of these I've loved for extremely different reasons. However, my re-reads yet again should send an obvious message. Even so, I've begun to collect Michael J. Sullivan's Riyria Revelations and hope to begin this series once I have them all in my possession.

message 42: by Jan (new)

Jan I'm starting a Terry Spear book "Seduced by the Wolf". I've never read any of the books from this author before.

message 43: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) I felt like a light read, so I picked up Hounded. I know I'm in the minority...again... but I didn't like it all that much. It was just "eh." I've got a review posted up that explains my feelings.

message 44: by Trevor (new)

Trevor (clevtrev) | 32 comments Just finished up Toll the Hounds and I thought it was great.

Next up is Tigana.

message 45: by Sharonna (new)

Sharonna Johnson (ronjwrite) I'm in the middle of "A Ranger's Tale." After that I'm reading "Bone Gods."

message 46: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) Has anyone read this yet? The Whitefire Crossing. GR says it isn't published yet, but the Barnes and Noble website disagrees. It looks pretty awesome! I think it will be my next buy.

Yes, I'm a bit late to the party -- I've been traveling. Personally, my favorite cathedral book is
Cathedral Cathedral The Story of Its Construction (Sandpiper) by David Macaulay by David Macaulay -- or it'd work wonderfully as a supplement to any other cathedral book -- much easier to understand the arches and flying buttresses and whatnot in illustrated form.

message 48: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments As for myself, I finished Blood of Elves Blood of Elves (The Witcher, #1) by Andrzej Sapkowski on my outgoing flight, then finished Shadowmarch Shadowmarch (Shadowmarch, #1) by Tad Williams by Tad Williams on my return flight and started Shadowplay Shadowplay (Shadowmarch, #2) by Tad Williams . I'm going to be reading this series for quite a while, I think.

Tigana is GREAT!

message 50: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Hélène wrote:"Tigana is GREAT!"

As is anything by Guy Gavriel Kay. I think he & Jacqueline Carey have some of the most beautifully-written books I've ever read.
