Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Just to refresh your memories, please nominate books in the general fantasy genre. Check our book shelf for books we've already read. If the book is part of a series, it needs to be the first one, as not everyone will have read the previous books. - Exception if the group has already read the first book.

All nominations require a second.

Authors MAY NOT nominate their own books.

I hope I haven't forgotten anything.

Oh, PS, nominations will be open until Wednesday, August 24.

Serenity | 11 comments How about A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin? With the TV show on hiatus, what better way to get your ASoIaF fix and get caught up / refreshed for Season Two. I'm won't bother with a summary since even those who live under rocks must know about this series by now...

message 3: by Andrea (last edited Aug 20, 2011 07:53PM) (new)

Andrea (andreakhost) Camera Obscura (The Bookman Histories, #2) by Lavie Tidhar

While this is the second book in a series, it's different characters than the first, so may escape the "second book" rule. (I haven't read the first, but will be reading this one.)

Camera Obscura:

CAN'T FIND A RATIONAL EXPLANATION TO A MYSTERY? CALL IN THE QUIET COUNCIL. The mysterious and glamorous Lady De Winter is one of their most valuable agents. A despicable murder inside a locked and bolted room on the Rue Morgue in Paris is just the start. This whirlwind adventure will take Milady to the highest and lowest parts of that great city - and cause her to question the very nature of reality itself

message 4: by Zach (new)

Zach Langley (othrelo) I'll second A Clash of Kings ... give me a reason to finish the first

message 5: by Michael (new)

Michael | 5 comments The Kinshield Legacy by K.C. May?

Natasa (natasalikes) How about Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence?
Prince of Thorns (The Broken Empire, #1) by Mark Lawrence

I second this nomination

message 9: by Nick (new)

Nick Most of the books I would nominate, have already been read. Clash would be the best choice but I will go with something else like Paul Kearney's Hawkwood's Voyage.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments Serenity wrote: "How about A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin? With the TV show on hiatus, what better way to get your ASoIaF fix and get caught up / refreshed for Season Two. I'm w..."

I already know one group that is reading it now, and another going to read the book I think in the next month or so.

message 11: by Shane (new)

Shane May I suggest a new release? The Black Gods War by Moses Sirigar. I've read the novella that he put out to tease the book, and it's very good.

Also, he's an indie who is a member here on goodreads as well. Might be able to bring him in for discussion as well.

Are you sure you've got the name of the book and author right? I can't find either one on Goodreads.

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Kevin wrote: "Serenity wrote: "How about A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin? With the TV show on hiatus, what better way to get your ASoIaF fix and get caught up / refreshed for ..."

Yes, it would be nice if we read something that isn't being read by other groups or hasn't been read recently.

message 14: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Augustine (Andrewaugustine) While this is the second book in a series, it's different characters than the first, so may escape the "second book" rule. (I haven't read the first, but will be reading this one.)
Camera Obscura:

I second this. I'm reading the first book and the author's got a knack for this writing thing.

Yeah, I seem to have butchered his name. Not sure how the search in goodreads works, but the title should have worked. Maybe it needed the apostrophe in the God's? In any case, I went and pulled it from my "to read" list. Here's the direct link in goodreads:

message 16: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 55 comments just to add my two cents here: i LOVE Clash of Kings, a 5 star read for me...but it is definitely a 2nd book in a series, and so it is clearly against the nomination parameters. a person can't read it and get everything that is going on without experiencing the first book (or, i suppose, the excellent tv series). also, as someone's mentioned, it has been featured lately in at least a couple popular fantasy groups.

message 17: by Dave (new)

Dave Michael wrote: "The Kinshield Legacy by K.C. May?"
I wholeheartedly second the Kinshield Legacy. Its sequel is already on my TBR pile.

message 18: by Hennie (new)

Hennie (hennied) I'd go for The Edge of the World by Kevin J. Anderson. It's the first of a trilogy of which the third book has just recently been published. So those of you who like the first one can go right on with reading the other two. (and most of you will like this one, it's really good).

I second this!

message 20: by Hélène (new)

Hélène (hlneb) I vote for Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence. I just read it last week but want to re-read it quickly. I'm still thinking about it.
Plus, he's a member on GR.

message 21: by Tim (last edited Aug 21, 2011 03:27AM) (new)

Tim I would like to nominate The Enchantment of Abigail Brown by Mark Waters. This is the first of twelve books in the Nousidian Chronicles saga and this author's debut novel. The characters are interesting, the plot intriguing and the story twists and turns like a hungry snake in a fast car. I would heartily recommend this to anyone who enjoys escaping into a well formed and inspired fantasy world. Mark has joined Goodreads recently, so give him some love ...
The Enchantment of Abigail Brown (The Nousidian Chronicles, book one) by Mark Waters The Enchantment of Abigail Brown

message 23: by Noeleen (new)

Noeleen I would also like to nominate Prince of Thorns

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Deryni Rising by Katherine Kurtz. Its the first in series I've loved since they were first written forever ago ...

message 25: by Robin (last edited Aug 21, 2011 05:11AM) (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments I'd like to second both of the following books as I'be been wanting a good excuse to read them:

The Black God's War A Stand-Alone Novel (Splendor and Ruin, Book I) by Moses Siregar III The Kinshield Legacy by K.C. May

The Black God's War A Stand-Alone Novel and The Kinshield Legacy

message 27: by Alison (new)

Alison DeLuca I just read Black Numbers by Dean Lappi - it was amazing! That's my nomination.

message 28: by Larry (new)

Larry Pontius (larrypontius) I would like to suggest The Once and Future King by T.H. White.

But the group has read #1 A Game of Thrones, so it qualifies. I do agree though, that other groups are reading it so it would be nice to read something different.

message 30: by Zach (new)

Zach Langley (othrelo) This is the only club I'm in so others don't concern me.;P

Plus didn't everyone do a re-read when the new one came out? I did. Can't go thru that torture again, lol!

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

message 33: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 282 comments One nomination per person people! lolol

How about a classic? Little, Big

message 34: by Kevin (last edited Aug 21, 2011 06:05PM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments I second Little Big. Its a book with so many undertones that it is not what it seems. Also it is one of the most complex book in the structure of the plot and the way it was written. It took me a couple of tries last summer to finish the book.

message 35: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments Jesslyn wrote: "Sandra aka Sleo wrote: "Kevin wrote: "Serenity wrote: "How about A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin? With the TV show on hiatus, what better way to get your ASoIaF ..."

Agree with you 100%.

message 36: by Kevin (last edited Aug 21, 2011 09:34AM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments Song of Ice and Fire has gotten so popular with the HBO series. I know there are groups here on Goodread that does not even read fantasy, now are reading the first book. Plus its not the only thing that Martin has even done.
But before the series came out, I tried to get people to read it, no one would care to.

message 37: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments I also second The Once and Future King, which I am doing a reread of it right now.

message 38: by Chelsea (last edited Aug 21, 2011 10:10AM) (new)

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) How about something fitting October? I was thinking something slightly spooky and supernatural. What about Something from the Nightside?

But if this get support I'll gladly second Empire in Black and Gold.

message 39: by Sandra (last edited Aug 21, 2011 10:06AM) (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Please do keep it to one nomination per person, folks. Otherwise we get too many and it gets crazy.

Those of you who have nominated more than one, pick one!

Guess that gets filed under 'things forgotten'!

Previous nomination deleted.
I nominate
Empire in Black and Gold
Empire in Black and Gold (Shadows of the Apt, #1) by Adrian Tchaikovsky which someone already seconded--Thanks! This is an awesome series.

Just pointing out that Clash of Kings is not outside of the nomination parameters, since this group has previously read the first book in the series (according to the group bookshelf). As for whether we should read something less popular, that's up to you guys. Although I've never understood knee-jerk compulsion to reject anything popular in the mainstream - why the indignation when something beloved and underrated finally garners the attention and acclaim it deserves? Most of the time, the Public has crap taste, so I personally celebrate these rare moments of clarity and good taste :)

I've actually already read this book lol, just thought that those who haven't shouldn't miss out.

message 47: by Jenny (last edited Aug 21, 2011 02:45PM) (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) I second The Eye of The World! My BF has been trying to get me to read the series for a couple years... I haven't read it yet because I know it's such a big series but it would be cool do read the first one as a BoTM.

message 48: by Marilyn (new)

Sorry, as it was last time, no books that are only available in ebook format, unless there's a MMP hidden away somewhere?
