message 1: by Connor, LOTR EPICNESS!!!!!!!!!!! (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 147 comments Mod
Are you looking forward to it? Do you think they'll do a good job?

message 2: by Becca (last edited Aug 22, 2011 04:30AM) (new)

Becca (beccabeccabooklover) I can't wait to see it. I think Peter Jackson will do a good job, The Lord of the Rings films are great adaptations, no matter the changes that they made. I'm really glad they're doing it in two films too they'll be able to do a lot better job than in one. And I don't mind too much that they're including characters like Legolas, Galadriel, Frodo and so on. I guess Peter Jackson has to take into consideration not only the people who love the books but also the film fans and faces such as those are recognisable, familiar and not really out of place. Frodo may be used at the beginning and end of the films reading the book that Bilbo wrote in the LOTR films?
It will be great whatever they do, its such a humourous book I hope they make the films that way.

I agree, but I don't like the fact Frodo is there knowing that The Hobbit is like 28 years before Frodo is born. I don't like Galadriel being in there either. Legolas lived in Mirkwood, so I'm fine with that.

In the second film, they'll have some of the fillers between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings (like the wizards driving Sauron from Dol Guldur). I guess they'll put Galadriel and Frodo in there. Frodo could be young and at the end or something.

message 4: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (ireneadler) | 19 comments I just think it's kinda weird Elijah Wood is playing young Frodo if the actor is like 10 years older than he was when they filmed the Fellowship of the Ring! Ah well. Makeup and stuff would change the way he looks, I guess.

And plastic surgery!

message 6: by Becca (last edited Aug 22, 2011 11:57AM) (new)

Becca (beccabeccabooklover) I thought that he would be reading the book from the time of the LOTR, after Bilbo has written There and back again: A hobbits tale by Bilbo Baggins. So I don't think he will be playing a younger Frodo. I think it may start with him reading the book to someone or a group of people at the beginning of the film in Hobbiton some time after he has destroyed the Ring. Then it will go back in time and show the story of the Hobbit. I'm sure thats what I've read or just imagined up maybe?! But it would be okay if they did that. Maybe I should contact Peter Jackson...

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 147 comments Mod
Haha, well I read on an article (a while ago though) that Elijah Wood wanted to be a young Frodo, but that may be true too. ;)

I hope you are right because that would make my life depressing if he's a young Frodo.

message 8: by Marika (new)

Marika | 10 comments no. peter jackson said that bilbo gave the book to frodo, and it's like...he's reading it and stuff....i dunno......i probably misinterpreted what he said

message 9: by Connor, LOTR EPICNESS!!!!!!!!!!! (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 147 comments Mod
But in The Lord of the Rings, he doesn't even start until the beginning of the Fellowship (only extended edition does it show that) and he gives his book to Frodo at Rivendell in the Fellowship of the Ring so I don't understand what Peter Jackson is thinking. He's gonna mess the whole thing up....

message 10: by Marika (new)

Marika | 10 comments HEY!!!! I LOVE PETER JACKSON!!!! Such a great Director!

message 11: by Becca (new)

Becca (beccabeccabooklover) If Frodo is shown reading the book it will obviously take place during the years between the destruction of the ring and Frodo leaving for the undying lands. The books are the books to us but I trust Peter Jackson. He did a great job of LOTR as a film and I'm sure the Hobbit will be too. He not only has to please the book lovers but also the film lovers and seeing as LOTR was filmed first, and the Hobbit is its prequel, he had to think of somehow combining the two, and making it familiar to the non readers.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

OK Its just a movie, who cares how they fit Frodo in or whatever, as long as Frodo doesn't go with them. People make mistakes and it doesn't really matter. Does it?

message 13: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (ireneadler) | 19 comments Not really. There are sometimes huge plot holes in Doctor Who, but it's still a great show!

During school today I had to read an excerpt of the Hobbit for a test! It was so easy answering the questions since I've already read it!

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Lucky! What kind of test was it?

message 15: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (ireneadler) | 19 comments English! :P

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

:)

message 17: by Becca (new)

Becca (beccabeccabooklover) We were just discussing a fact of how it'll all fit together, and people care who are lovers of the book and want the films to turn out good. But I'm sure Peter Jackson will to a good job, only have to watch the LOTR to see that.
And a test on the Hobbit sounds so cool :) If only you could read the books that you like in school rather than all the classics and drivel that I have to read in university at the moment! :(

message 18: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Looking forward to it; expecting good things but somewhat dubious. Did it really need to be two films? Never seemed to me that there'd be enough content for that which is what's led to all this extra stuff like Galadriel. They should just stick to the story and make it one film imo.

message 19: by Becca (new)

Becca (beccabeccabooklover) Sadly the biggest factor for film makers these days is moneymoneymoney! With two films they'd make a lot more than one and I guess that's what they're thinking about mainly. But I do think they could get two good films out of the book. They'd have to include everything, which isn't a bad idea really, but they are obviously going to add extra like you said with Galadriel. I guess what will be will be in the end, but I'll probably love it :)

message 20: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Yeah, that probably is their motivation isn't it! Especially since LOTR was such a huge franchise, so many people will go see them for that reason alone no doubt. Sure Jackson will do a good job of it, and I'll probably love it as well but there's still that little part of me that's going to go into the cinema cautiously.

Speaking of plot holes, have you seen Episodes 1 through 3 of Star Wars? Ugh.

message 22: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (ireneadler) | 19 comments I did a few years ago, but I don't remember it very well. I'll have to rewatch those. I hate plot holes. They're really annoying, especially in books... *coughSHERLOCKHOLMEScough*

message 23: by Connor, LOTR EPICNESS!!!!!!!!!!! (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 147 comments Mod
The first three Episodes of Star Wars have the worse plot ever. It makes absolutely no sense.

Are there plot holes in Sherlock Holmes?

Agreed.
Keep Galadriel out of the hobbit.
By the way i think they picked a great actor for Bilbo (martin freeman), and i can't wait to see laketown.

That they're going to split it into two parts prkobably means they'll make a good movies but get a lot of money out of it!

message 27: by Connor, LOTR EPICNESS!!!!!!!!!!! (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 147 comments Mod
Yeah, I agree. Martin Freeman looks like a good Bilbo.

I can't wait to see Laketown either. If it was in the trailer, I didn't notice it.

The second movie I think is gonna have some filler events between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings like The Wizards driving Sauron out of Dul Guldur and the Gollum Pursuit and stuff.

message 28: by Anna (new)

Anna Elizabeth (anna_elizabeth) Yeah, that part I saw in the trailer with Galadriel and Gandalf together was just...wrong! And did you hear that there is supposed to be some romance between Tauriel and Kili? That's is so wrong! And Tauriel, a female elf, being the head of the elven guard!?!?

But I agree that Martin Freeman is going to make an awesome Bilbo, and I am looking forward to seeing Frodo there for a minute or two. ;) And so looking forward to December!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 29: by Connor, LOTR EPICNESS!!!!!!!!!!! (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 147 comments Mod
What? I did see the Gandalf Galadriel thing but didn't hear about the Kili thing. SO not cool! It's like they have to throw stuff like that in there because it's "popular in movies!" The fans don't like it if it doesn't even fit!

Yeah! Overall I think the movie is gonna be awesome!

message 30: by Anna (new)

Anna Elizabeth (anna_elizabeth) I know! :(

maybe i'll teach myself elvish.

message 32: by Anna (new)

Anna Elizabeth (anna_elizabeth) haha that's a good idea! I'm going to re-read the books and listen to the LOTR soundtracks. I don't have time for much else because of school and other stuff.

Hey! If you do teach yourself Elvish, talk about it in the group. That be quite interesting.
As for what I might do to pass the time, I'll just keep busy. Perhaps watch other movies along the way to distract me.

message 35: by L.M. (new)

L.M. (lmsherwin) | 5 comments *GASP* I am SOOOO excited about the movies. I think the movie adaptations were brilliant of Lord of the Rings. I know they changed stuff, but it's a movie, so things were bound to be a little different. I'm very curious to see how they turn out.

P.S.--whoever said they wanted to learn Elvish for the movie...LET'S DO IT AS A GROUP!!! That would be so crazy fun.

message 36: by Connor, LOTR EPICNESS!!!!!!!!!!! (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 147 comments Mod
Yeah, the movies will be awesome, but now they're making 3! Why 3? Why not one? I think it's for making money.

Yes! We could learn as a group! haha! That would be fun. :)

message 37: by Nat (last edited Sep 23, 2012 04:00PM) (new)

Nat (long4adventure) | 15 comments um, i'm attempted to learn elvish numerus times but i've never found out where you could learn it from. I think the Silmarion has some of the words and translations in it but the alphabet and seems to be so drastically different from ours that i've can't get the hang of it.Does Elvish have a Rosetta Stone program or something?
Viggo Morgenson(actor playing Aragorn) had to learn Elvish for many of the scenes. I can't imagine how much the actor had to immense himself to play that huge of a role!

message 38: by Connor, LOTR EPICNESS!!!!!!!!!!! (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 147 comments Mod
That would be really cool if we could figure out how, haha!

Idk if it has Rosetta Stone. I doubt it would, but that would be cool. I don't know if it's worth the Rosetta Stone money though, haha.

message 39: by Julie (new)

Julie | 2 comments viggo mortensen is just magical! :D

the hobbit kinda disappointed me... i think they tried too hard on the effects and stuff (like with the trolls or radagast) and it just felt tacky to me. i don't know if during the lord of the rings there were technological restraints or if there just wasn't a demand for tacky movie-ness, but i'm glad that wasn't in the lotr films.

overall, the hobbit just felt much more like a children's movie, which i guess is closer to what it's supposed to be anyway...

message 40: by Connor, LOTR EPICNESS!!!!!!!!!!! (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 147 comments Mod
I completely agree about The Hobbit. It felt too much like some Hollywood production... Like it was more for the drama and less of the Tolkien feel to it... if you know what I mean.

message 41: by brooke1994 (new)

brooke1994 (formerlynarnian525) | 21 comments I love The Hobbit movies. I recently saw The Desolation of Smaug. I don't know why people complain about movies going away from the plot lines of books. There are some things that just don't work on the screen so the director needs to change them. I love The Lord of the Rings movies too, and there were plenty of differences there too. I'm looking forward to seeing There and Back Again.

How badly is Thorin going to whup Kili for liking an Elf? :O

Paul | 9 comments I liked most of AUJ, hated most of DOS, so when someone comes along and edits together a shorter version I guess I'll enjoy it more.

message 47: by Sabella (new)

Sabella (wesleycrushersgf) | 4 comments I really like the changes they made in the movie cause in the book there's a lot of just walking and talking and character development but that sort of thing doesn't really work in a movie, you need action otherwise it gets boring

message 48: by Paul (last edited Mar 31, 2014 11:58AM) (new)

Paul | 9 comments That's the thing though they didn't have to make it into an action film and I don't really see the point in comparing the book to the film. Personally I would have been entirely happy for one three hour film in the vein of the book-a charming if rather non nonsensical children's fairytale.

I don't read Tolkien's work looking for action sequences (though some such as The Fall of Gondolin in the BOLT has this in abundance) the beauty of his work lies in the world he created, the intricate plotting, memorable prose and larger than life heroes. If I wan't something cinematic I'll watch a film, if I'm reading a 75 year old children's written by a scholar I'm going to expect something different.

message 49: by Sabella (new)

Sabella (wesleycrushersgf) | 4 comments I know what you mean and I would still love the movie if it was the same as the book, but they have to make movies that appeal to everyone not just the small group that love the original story.
