I would use these books with children from around 5/6 upwards as it has a strong message and some complex text.

I agree, you do have to be careful with this collection and some of Roald Dahl's collections of stories. They're actually written for adults, and some of his stories are quite disturbing.

Great reviews, Samuel. I loved Stig as a child, and have also used it in school with KS2 children. It supports Science topic work on recycling and materials as well as literacy work and just being a great read! For me, Tom's Midnight Garden is simply one of the best books ever written for children; the time paradoxes, the description of the seetting, her economical but beautiful use of language... I agree, it doesn't dramatise well on screen, but works very well as an audio drama, and you may be able to get one from the library on CD. http://www.pearcelecture.com/lectures... has an audio recording of Michael Rosen speaking about Philippa Pearce.

Thanks Maria and Paul. Children should read playscripts as part of the PNS Literacy strategy, and getting hold of good ones can be tricky. The Ted Hughes plays would be a great one to remember.

Thanks Makeba. I haven't read this book, but I do know Verna Wilkins as the autjor of several biographies for children of black people of note (e.g. Malorie Blackman). It is good to see a modern fairytale with black characters; in my opinion there is still far too little diversity in fantasy and science fiction- hence wiy Malorie Blackman is such an important figure!
