All questions about specific tasks and also general discussion. We will be adding some lists for books that could fit some of the harder to find tasks and updating it when people make suggestions. Feel free to give suggestions on books you think would fit someones needs for a task.

Daisy | 686 comments May we drop the 'A' and 'The' as well for 25.2 (the initial challenge)?

message 3: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Oh, yes. That would be fine. :)

message 4: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments Yay, thanks! :) And I just wanted to tell you you did a wonderful job with the challenge! The tasks are awesome! :)

message 5: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I tried to get all the suggestions on there. Hopefully none are too hard to find a book.

On 5.8 School Assignment task: I will start telling who you need to assign tomorrow, then after that probably every other day as people sign up for the challenge. At the first, it will be easier, but as we go on, it will be more difficult. I will try to get to you within 2 days. The only time I may not be able to is on weekends. I am not usually near a computer on Saturday and Sunday, so you may have to wait until Monday. :)

Kayla | 604 comments Does anyone know of any books where the main character is a Literature/English major in college?

I have been asked for about 5.7 Teeth and Tail. Here is a little clarification that hopefully can help in your searches.

Teeth: the cover does not have to be just teeth, but have some type of teeth showing in the picture:
combs and brushes, someone smiling, an animal with teeth showing.

Tails: again not just a tail, it could be any animal thats tail is showing, a person who may have her hair in a pony tail, a comet, a rocket or plane that leaves a mark like a jet stream.

Nicki (ophia) | 85 comments I need some help with task 20.3: Classics revisited. I don't know if I'LL Get that far but I don't even have any ideas. Anyone have any suggestions?

message 11: by Tami (new)

Nicki, here are some that popped into my head immediately, but I am sure there are a lot more.

Pride and Prejudice & Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Sense and Sensibility & Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters

or something by Gregory Maguire, like Wicked and the Wizard of Oz.

Feel free to poach books from everyone elses lists too!

Daisy | 686 comments Pride and Prejudice & Epic Fail/Austenland/Me and Mr. Darcy (the list for modern adaptations of this one goes on and on)

Jane Eyre & Jane

Peter Pan & Peter and the Starcatchers

That's really all I can think of for now.

Beastly
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

message 14: by Sashana (new)

Sashana There is also a Popular Classic Retellings Books shelf.
I hope that helps out.

Nicki (ophia) | 85 comments Thanks for all the help everyone:)

message 16: by Amber (new)

Amber (hippiefemme) This long list from LibraryThing was incredibly helpful to me.

Same name, different book (http://www.librarything.com/topic/19725)

message 17: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments Thanks Amber! I've been having a bit of trouble finding books for that task.

message 18: by Kayla (new)

Kayla | 604 comments I picked Mockingbird and The Mockingbirds for that task.

message 19: by Amber (new)

Amber (hippiefemme) No problem, Daisy! I'm glad it could help.

message 20: by Sashana (new)

Sashana For anyone who needs help with 10.4 or 20.3 Peter and the Starcatchers complies with both.

message 21: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jsnail) Question: I haven't made my lister yet, but I read The Tales of Beedle the Bard after the start of the challenge and I was wonder if it would be able to count for anything. It is about 111 pages I believe. It's ok if it is a no no considering it's 39 pages under 150, but it is a JK Rowling/Albus Dumbledore book =] (aka it was awesome)

message 22: by Sashana (last edited Sep 21, 2011 07:29AM) (new)

Sashana Do you guys thin dragons would count for 5.5?

message 23: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Jessica, it could possibly fill the teeth and tails because my copy has a rabbit on it and you can see its tail. Just make sure to not cut that close in pages on any of the other books.

Sashana, I don't normally think about dragons for Halloween, but if you can't find anything else, I will allow it.

message 24: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I can find something else. I just wanted to make sure.

message 25: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jsnail) Thanks Tami! No worries, all of the books I usually read are well over 150 pages. I just couldn't resister buying another Harry Potter book since the whole books and movies are now over. Just needed more childhood in my life =]

I'm working on my list today and tomorrow. It's been quite the doctor appointment filled week. I'm 5lbs and 3 weeks from getting my hip replaced (aka watch out everyone because I have all the time in the world to read!!).

There are now 2 Megan's so please put you last initial in you posts so we can tell you apart. Thanks.

Megan Kayla wrote: "Does anyone know of any books where the main character is a Literature/English major in college?"

Did you think of Possession ?

message 28: by Megan (new)

Megan And I was wondering if anyone had found a list of books with months in the title? I have put Come September by Arundhati Roy down but not sure that I can't improve the choice :)

I didn't think of that book, though I read it in high school. I decided to go with a book about an amateur writer for that challenge. Thanks though!

Megan wrote: "And I was wondering if anyone had found a list of books with months in the title? I have put Come September by Arundhati Roy down but not sure that I can't improve the cho..."

I decided to go with The October Country by Ray Bradbury because it's the only one that I'm kind of familiar with.

I'm also considering November of the Heart by Lavyrle Spencer. I don't know if you like romance novels or not, but Spencer's an old-fashioned writer. I enjoyed a couple of her novels, but sometimes her books feel too antiquated to me.

Megan Kayla wrote: "Megan wrote: "Kayla wrote: "I decided to go with The October Country by Ray Bradbury because it's the only one that I'm kind of familiar with. "

That could be an interesting read - I never realised that this section would turn out hard!

I chose Arundhati Roy because although I had never heard of Come September I keep meaning to read The God of Small Things. Well I guess I'll decide properly when/if I get to it :)

message 31: by Kayla (new)

Kayla | 604 comments I didn't think about October Sky. I guess because it was originally called Rocket Boys. I didn't know the publishers changed the title to match the movie title.

I love the movie. It was shown at my middle school at least twice a year by different teachers. I guess you could say it's a school favorite.

message 32: by Megan (new)

Megan Thanks Nuliifidian, that's an interesting looking list. :) I will have a proper explore of it soon :)

message 33: by KatyO (new)

KatyO where do I post that I want to join the challenge? (for example in order to get someone to assign a book for me like in that one point etc.)?

message 34: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
In the Task List (And Rules) thread. Some people put their whole list in a spreadsheet and post it there, and others actually post their lists. The latter is more user friendly if you like to poach choices from others lists. :) I will put you down, and get you partnered up as soon as I can. Welcome to the challenge.

message 35: by KatyO (new)

KatyO Thank you!

Yes, I would consider volumes of that size as their own books. That would be fine.

message 37: by Arianna (last edited Sep 30, 2011 08:23PM) (new)

Arianna (theycallmena) Three questions!

First: Would Look Both Ways: Bisexual Politics and Ways of Dying: A Novel count for 25.4? I dropped the subtitle on the first book, and figured that would be okay, but I just wanted to check before I posted for points :)

Another question: I want to read The Magician's Nephew and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for 20.2. Magician's Nephew is technically a prequel, but was not chronologically published. Does it still count as the first book in the series?

Number 3: For 25.5, my book that takes place over several years is The Dance of the Dissident Daughter, which is a memoir, which would technically cover several years. Do memoirs count too?

Arianna,
I am fine with your first and third, but decided to let Ashley decide on the second since it was her task for winning the last challenge.

Ashley,
Ariana asked "Another question: I want to read The Magician's Nephew and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for 20.2. Magician's Nephew is technically a prequel, but was not chronologically published. Does it still count as the first book in the series?" Can you let her know if you think this would work for your task?

message 40: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Nullifidian,
Sure, that would work.

message 41: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments Can I unclaim points? I claimed points on a finished task and then realised I would much rather use that book for a two book task I now have access to the other book for...

message 42: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
That would be fine. Just make a post in the Leaderboard and completed tasks thread.

message 43: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments Thanks so much! :)

message 44: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I have a question about 25.1 (ABC’s and 123’s). Does the number have to be written numerically (1, 2, 3) or can it be spelt out (one, two, three)?

message 45: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments I read Specials for the Group read challenge, but there's no discussion thread for it (or I can't find it, but I looked through all the threads and searched using the search discussion posts...). What do I do now?

message 46: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Sashana, I will allow it to be spelled instead of numeric. I have had a few ask already.

Daisy, I think we did that all under the Uglies thread. I am not sure, but you can post there. Or create a thread for the Specials. :)

message 47: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments Thanks Tami, I created a thread :)

message 48: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Thanks, Tami :)

message 49: by Beks (new)

Beks (bekster15) I am reading Machiavelli's The Prince for a politics class, could I use it for the 5.3 challenge? It isn't about presidents but it is about how rulers should get and maintain power.

message 50: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Beks, I will allow that.
