message 4: by amber (new)

amber (neverling) | 3 comments I'm not sure about this quote. It's attributed to Hemingway... but Hemingway is only quoting Shakespeare's Macbeth, here. What's the policy on that?

message 5: by Banjomike (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments It is spelling challanged as well. Furry? I've fixed the spelling and attribs on this one and half a dozen other versions of the same quote. I cannot get this new "improved" animated combine filter thing to work so I will leave it to someone with more patience.

message 6: by Melody (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments I hate the animated combine.

message 7: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (stewartry) | 3 comments It was unpunctuated, and an incomplete quote as well, and needed an ellipsis if the whole thing wasn't desired.

Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

Gerd | 1050 comments This Carroll quote seems wrong:
http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...

Edit to post below:
Yeah, had to dig around in the original text on Gutenberg to find the actual version - that paraphrased version is found everywhere on the net, but no one can give a source for it. :)

message 15: by Banjomike (last edited Sep 28, 2011 05:33AM) (new)

Banjomike | 5166 comments I'm not sure there IS a correct version of that quote. The book text reads:

`Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?'
`That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,' said the Cat.
`I don't much care where--' said Alice.
`Then it doesn't matter which way you go,' said the Cat.
`--so long as I get SOMEWHERE,' Alice added as an explanation.
`Oh, you're sure to do that,' said the Cat, `if you only walk long enough.'

I think the quote as given is a paraphrase, and a crappy one at that. 4531 people cannot be wrong, can they?

message 16: by Gerd (last edited Sep 28, 2011 05:44AM) (new)

Gerd | 1050 comments Digging around some more, it could be that this paraphrased quote was actually coined by ex-Beatle George Harrison:

http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.ns...

"But oh Lord we pay the price
With the spin of the wheel with the roll of the dice
Ah yeah you pay your fare
And if you don't know where you're going
Any road will take you there"

I like the idea of changing a Lewis Carroll quote to George Harrison. Bound to cause a riot. Let a super do it.

Should be merged with this (correct) one:

message 19: by James (new)

James (james_k_bowers) | 151 comments It's "Semper Fidelis" (meaning "Always Faithful").

Former U.S. Marine that I am, I'd consider this a worthwhile quote to add to my own favorites... if only the correct version existed.

I'll leave fixing this to someone with more experience with the quotes - it's not my forte.

I think this is a "copy and paste from Arabic to English with something set wrong" error. Someone emailed me a quote from an Arabic text which looked just like that.

Are the quotes from your book incorrect? They all seem to be well within fair use.

Carroll wrote: "These particular postings aren't even really quotes. Just excerpts from the book."

The majority of the quotes in the GR database are citations from books or other written works, although that is not a requirement.

Banjomike | 5166 comments I've changed the attribution and merged the two versions. Now the numbers don't add up. The previous ones were liked by 58 and 36 people. The new improved one only rates 70. Did 24 people really like both versions?

message 43: by Gerd (new)

Gerd | 1050 comments According to Gutenberg.org the correct version has to be:
"To die will be an awfully big adventure."

message 45: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I have a quote I can't fix. One is correct http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/... and the other http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/... is the same quote but the authors name was spelt wrong.
It won't let me change the authors name because the quote already exists under the correct name.
Does someone else know how to correct this?

message 46: by Paula (last edited Oct 21, 2011 01:15PM) (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Got 52,

Best thing to do is to correct author name and add additional . or and other character to make the quotes different

Then combine the two quotes or post for a super if needed

Combined the "To die" quotes (http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...), though it still needs to be corrected, and the "To live" quotes (http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/...).
For the latter version the tag says Peter Pan movie?
Can anybody verify that?

Sarah (Presto agitato) (mg2001) | 46 comments Could a super librarian please fix this quote? It's a typo:

http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show/924

The line should be "The round pegs in the square holes." (Not "The round pegs in the square hole.")

Sources are the original Apple commercials:
