A Hunger Like No Other: (Buddy Read, start 9/30/11)

1. How much does the book cover affect what you expect from a book, going in? As far as I’ve been able to see, there are only two English covers for this book. This one (US) and this one (UK) . Which one do you have? Which is your favourite and why?
2. What do you think of the Prologue? Did it build up your interest or gross you out? What are your first impressions of Lachlain?
3. I know it’s fairly standard in romances for the heroine to be a virgin, but less so in paranormal romance, where the female protagonists tend to be kick-ass, give ’em hell hotties. Yet here we have a 70 year old virgin who’s never been kissed (til now) and can’t feed herself. What are your first impressions of Emmaline?
4. Were you surprised at how early on they got nekkid? Are you a fan of early hot-and-heavy or do you prefer when the story eases into it? (no pun intended, heehee)
5. Do you think she would have jumped?
6. How are you finding the writing style? The pace? Are you seeing the spots of humour in Emma’s internal dialogue?
Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapters 5 – 8
7. Were you surprised that the danger to Emma was not a big, strong, stubborn, Lykae male but vampires?
8. What do you think of Emma’s Valkyrie aunts back in New Orleans? Aunt Regin (the Radiant) is the one who programed her cell phone with the Crazy Frog ring tone and is giving her grief about “going dental with some dude.” What do you think of her vernacular? Her attitude? Do any of the others stand out?
9. How hard do you think it was for Emma to grow up in a household that despised, hunted, and killed vampires? (Well, now you know why Emma is still a virgin at 70; lack of a dating pool.)
10. “…overwhelmed by universal tales of her fabled beauty…” So, we know Emma was searching for her unknown father, but have you figured out who her mother is yet?
11. One of my favorite scenes is when Emma witnesses the two European starlets try to gain Lachlain’s attention with a dropped lipstick – and fail. He only has eyes for her. We find that, though Emma is shy and timid with the lore, she can hold her on against female humans. Comments.
12. We know Emma cannot lie and she is afraid of pain. What did you think of Emma’s plea for Lachlain to try not to hurt her. Think it will make an impression on him one way or another?
13. What did you think about Nix’s knock-knock joke message?
14. When is Emma going to get some blood? What will happen if she doesn’t? If needed, how will Lachlain go about getting blood for her?
15. What were your thoughts on the fight scene at Val Hall Manor near New Orleans? Which of the vampires stood out to you and why? Anything they said or did that peaked your Spidey scenses?
16. Lachlain has a lot of conflicting feelings toward and wrong assumptions about Emma. When is he going to figure it out? Let’s hope before the next full moon?
17. Uhhh, Lachlain tore up the hotel room while Emma was sleeping. What adjective would you use to describe that?
CaroB’s Questions for Chapters 9-12
18. Do you think Emma has a right to be angry about what Lachlain did to the hotel room? Or, is she looking at the glass half-empty, instead of focusing on the fact that he didn’t hurt her?
19. What did you think of the flashback of the aunts burning her hand? WTH kind of family is this? Do you think there was a bit of punishment in there for the vampire-half, or was it merely a “that which does not kill us, makes us stronger” lesson?
20. “If Lachlain didn’t want to tell her why he’d huffed and puffed and torn their hotel room to bits...
...he had to go all big bad wolf on her...
But this little piggy can compartmentalize, Emma thought...
He narrowed his eyes, then rasped in her ear, “All the better to feel their gazes on you,” while the back of his claw traced up her back....”
From the beginning of Chapter 9 till the end, there were various references to The Big Bad Wolf from Red Riding Hood and Three Little Pigs. Did you catch it? Did you like it? Adding to the humor or silly distraction?
21. Did anyone else get the reference to the no sweating for 90 minutes a week as the surgeon general recommends? I wasn’t sure if that was a US specific joke, cos I missed it.
22. What’s your impression of Annika so far as Emma’s foster-mother?
23. Why do you think Emma insists on Lachlain putting his blood in a glass first? What did you think of that scene when she drinks from him? What about the jaw dislocation? Warranted?
24. Why did he lie about being her *guffaw!* Australian buddy? (Seriously, in some parts of Oz, we say "mate" all the time here, to mean anything from "hey" to "friend" to "idiot". It's a very flexible word to us, but rarely used to mean life-partner!)

25. Do you agree? Do the Lykae need better PR? Emma has never met a Lykae before and her family love to watch movies together; did they also influence her perception of him? Did you understand and get a clear idea when he was explaining how he looked when he changed?
26. Hmmmm. Is it possible that Lachlain starting to enjoy Emma feeding from him? Emma says, “This isn’t me.” Comment on that statement.
27. What do you think of Emma’s “bizarre dream?” What about his nightmare – his physical threat to her – and her ability to comfort and sooth him before he when ballistic? How about the inevitability of that scene?
28. Do you avoid conflict? Could you see Emma’s point about always losing?
29. The end of Chapter 15 is another favorite scene for me: Emma crying Lachlain’s name and sprinting toward him. Your impressions of that and the fight scene continued in the next chapter? What of Emma’s refusal to drink when she was wounded? What of his own regenerating leg?
30. Ah. Several cats out of the bag in these chapters. Emma heard she’s his mate by one of the vamps and Lachlain now knows she’s half Valkyrie and “innocent.” What did you think about Lachlain’s conversation with Emma’s family?
31. The Accession has started. Will all these different creatures of the Lore be on opposite sides? Where does that leave Emma?
Tracey's Questions Chapters 17-20
32. First line of Ch. 17 "Your brother's in Louisiana, my liege." Did you make the connection right away?
33. Do you know who her mother is now? Comments?
34. Do you think Garreth and Lucia have something going on between them?
35. Emma has previously declared herself as someone who avoids conflict, but is increasingly becoming more provocative and surprising herself by how bold she is. Head-butting the vampire in the fight, throwing shampoo bottles at Lachlain. Why do you think that is?
36. Now that Emma is seeing her memories of her Aunts in a different light, does that change your impression of them and how they've treated her?
37. Do you think Lachlain will leave Emma to seek his revenge on the vampires?
38. Were you surprised that Lachlain knew her feeding from him was what was impeding his leg from healing?
39. One of the keys to writing is ending a chapter in a way that makes the reader want to continue on to the next. The final line of Ch. 20 " 'You bloody bitch!' a woman screamed from the gallery downstairs." Were you able to stop reading, or did you have to continue on to find out what was going on?
Susan’s Questions for Chapters 21-24
40. We learn that Cass is the one yelling at Emma and starts a huge fight. What did you think of Emma's reaction to Cass? What about Emma's reaction to the fight and her realizing that she had wanted Lachlain after? She even went so far as to ask for a kiss in a roundabout way. Did that surprise you?
41. Emma finally learned the truth that she's his mate. Did her response surprise you? Why or why not?
42. What do you think Cassandra really wants? She knows she's not Lachlain's mate. Does she really want him or his power? Do you think Emma will take Cass up on her offer to help her escape?
43. Bowen gave Emma some important advice. Will she listen?
44. Emma had another of her "dreams". It took hearing it, several times, and her finally putting the dreams together for it to sink in. Do you think she'll treat Lachlain differently now?
45. At the end of ch 24 he's given her a gift and she's noticed he's cut himself. Do you think he's trying to sway her? Will it work?

46. At this stage, do you think Emma is resisting Lachlain for herself, as a power play, or because she doesn’t want to disappoint her aunts?
47. Were you surprised at Emma’s boldness and the lengths (pun intended!) she’d go to, to escape?
48. At the beginning of chapter 26, Emma starts hearing voices in her head. What did you think that was?
49. OMG, was that scene in the forest HOT or too rough? Was this how you thought it would first happen?
50. They’re finally talking! About family, and histories and revenge and living together. For me, this adds as much intimacy to the budding relationship as the scene in the forest, if not more. What about you?
51. Why has Emma still not told Lachlain about her seeing his memories?
Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapters 29 – 32
52. What do you think of Kristoff “making” his army? Is he going to be a good guy or a bad guy?
53. Isn’t that a great line: My heart lies vulnerable outside my chest. Did it make you a little sad that Lachlain was sad they couldn’t have bairns.
54. Ah! The aunts have made it to Kinevane Castle. What was your favorite quote?
55. Emma figured out who her father is. Did this surprise you? How about that she agreed to go with the vamp?
56. So Annika has Garreth and wants to exchange him for Emma. Think Lachlain will go for that? Especially since he has now figured out who Emma’s father is also?
57. Pretty smart of Ivo to want Emma for his bride, right? Makes perfect sense, now that the pieces fall into place. Comments.
58. Impressions of Demestriu. His story about Helen and him. That he was toying with Emma.
59. Were you surprised that Demestriu told her how to kill him? That was pretty gruesome, right? Too much for you?
60. Did you think Ivo was a tad infatuated, or just laying it on thick in an attempt to woo her?
61. Well, she learned out to trace just in time. Were you surprised she went to the bayou; why did she feel she couldn’t go to Lachlain? And Lachlain is down for the count. Are you enjoying the suspense?
CaroB’s Questions for Chapter 33 to The End
62. What did you think of the glimpse we got of Myst and Wroth’s relationship now?
63. Why does no-one believe where Emma has been? Why do they assume she’s delirious?
64. Is Lothaire a good guy or bad guy?
65. Were you surprised that Garreth was loyal as soon as he saw Emma?
66. Did you think all the loose ends were tied up nicely? What about the ending would you have changed if you could?
67. Will you continue with the series?

3-4 chapters a day would be good for me, but if we start it at the end of next week, I could possibly do more...
I noticed my ebook is 36 chapters, but it's really badly formatted, is that the same #chapters you ladies have?

Great, Cheryl! Have you read the prequel? If not, I don't think it is important. I was a little frustrated with it and when I read this book I didn't even know they were related. I think that is b/c the glossary is at the back of the prequel.

1. How much does the book cover affect what you expect from a book, going in? As far as I’ve been able to see, there are only two English covers for this book. This one (US) and this one (UK). Which one do you have? Which is your favourite and why?

Yet here we have a 70 year old virgin who’s never been kissed (til now) and can’t feed herself. What are your first impressions of Emmaline?

5. Do you think she would have jumped?
6. How are you finding the writing style? The pace? Are you seeing the spots of humour in Emma’s internal dialogue?

Man I wish I had the book already! CaroB's questions look interesting :D

1. How much does the book cover affect what you expect from a book, going in? As far as I’ve been able to see, there are only two English covers for this book. This one (US) and this one (UK). Which one do you have? Which is your favourite and why? I’m reading this as an ebook, which came with the US cover, but I prefer the UK one. Mostly because I haven’t read that her hair is that extra-long and from what I’ve read of her character so far, she doesn’t strike me as being confident enough to wear that tiny cross-lace tank… lol, yes, I’ve given this too much thought, but I like to be able to visualise the characters/settings sometimes and the cover helps with that.
2. What do you think of the Prologue? Did it build up your interest or gross you out? What are your first impressions of Lachlain? Definitely built my interest. I’m wondering how he was captured in the first place and why. I felt sorry for Lachlain at this stage, he seemed to be going purely on instinct, as if his humanity had been stripped away.
Maybe I’m a sucker, but I’m enjoying the change of pace in the PNR. Emma is not what I was expecting at all, and though I did roll my eyes at the fact that she’s a 70- year old virgin vampire (I mean, seriously??!) I’m also detecting a lil’ bit of satire here. Or maybe it’s wishful thinking… lol, either way, I think it’ll be fun to see how Emma’s character develops.
4. Were you surprised at how early on they got nekkid? Are you a fan of early hot-and-heavy or do you prefer when the story eases into it? (no pun intended, heehee) Surprised, yes. A fan, yes, provided there’s a little bit of characterisation involved. I think this fit the bill nicely :-)
5. Do you think she would have jumped? I’m disappointed she was even up there! But no, I don’t think she would have.
6. How are you finding the writing style? The pace? Are you seeing the spots of humour in Emma’s internal dialogue? Enjoying the pace, easy to read, quick dialogue and a little tongue-in-cheek humour from time to time and some smexy scenes already. It’s more than keeping me interested.

1. How much does the book cover affect what you expect from a book, going in? As far as I’ve been able to see, there are only two English covers for this book. This one (US) and this one (UK) . Which one do you have? Which is your favourite and why?
Oh, I remember buying this one b/c the cover definitely grabbed me! I love all that long hair. And he is just, like, towering over her. I guess I was in the mood that day, LOL! This was really my first vamp romance book, and something I was in the mood for five years ago. I remember my eyebrows raising a bit, as Ms. Cole hadn’t written anything like this before. So many publishers have their historical romance writers go to the dark side and – really – they just can’t make it happen. But, I gave it a chance, and boy am I glad I did!
I hadn’t seen the UK cover. (Geez! I don’t know why!) I am a bit of a cover ho – though I try not to be. I love it too. That looks like Emmaline to me. That pale skin and those full lips. I want them both, LOL!
2. What do you think of the Prologue? Did it build up your interest or gross you out? What are your first impressions of Lachlain?
I loved the prologue. It is full of his anguish and really sets the tone for his desperation. He has to be, Lachlain is a perfect tortured hero. Talk about a hero in pursuit! He is after his mate. Something he has been dreaming of for eons. I love his adjustment to the modern world; I believe that is a big part of it. Talk about sensory overload. I love that we get his POV and that he realizes how Emma might feel toward him – and how he waffles on even that point.
Emmaline is a wuss. I’ve said it b/f in this group. I get a little tired of all these kick-ass heroines popping from the womb fully formed “Rambo-etts.” It is nice to see a nice, shy, sweet virgin in a PNR. And she is truly terrified of Lachlain.
4. Were you surprised at how early on they got nekkid? Are you a fan of early hot-and-heavy or do you prefer when the story eases into it? (no pun intended, heehee)
The first time I read this book I was extremely surprised. I know I read the occasional erotic novel, but I really am a bit of a prude. Lisarenee has a great line, “I think they should have been formally introduced.” Which just kills me. This is a tricky point in romances, for me. I don’t really like my protagonists to jump into the sack (or shower) too quickly; but this one worked for me, and worked in the story.
5. Do you think she would have jumped?
Yeah. I think she might have. She was almost in a trance-like-depressed-sleep-state.
6. How are you finding the writing style? The pace? Are you seeing the spots of humour in Emma’s internal dialogue?
Love the writing style and pace. The story is so good; the words leap off the page. I love the occasional italics: Our card?

#1 – Oh! I love the long hair. You used to see it a lot in the older romance covers. Not so much anymore. So, you’re going for accuracy, LOL! One of the things I love the most about Emmaline is her fashion sense. Oh, no! Our first major disagreement: I think she would wear a tiny red cross-laced tank, LOL!!!
#2 – Such a great line you wrote there: “as if he humanity had been stripped away.” Love it. Says it all.
#3 – Yes, didn’t Oprah just do a show on 30 year-old virgins. LOL! Emma’s character development is one of my favorite parts of this book. Emma the Meek.
#5 – **Gasp!** Another disagreement; though this one is minor. (Fashion overrules suicide!)
#6 – This makes me so happy to hear, CaroB. I love when someone else loves the books I love.

1. I just got to the point in the book where she was wearing something very similar and thought "D'oh! Was I ever wrong!!" That'll learn me!
2.Thanks!
3. Emma who, Emma who, Emma who? Loving it!
5. LOL! I hadn't considered the trance-like state... I was thinking more along the lines that She's stronger than she realises, but she wont know that til push comes to shove. Had a giggle! Good to know where your priorities lie!
6. ditto :-)

1. I agree, the UK one does match what I envisage Emma to look like. I also prefer the photo to the illustration cover. (that's one of the reasons I drool over the men in the UK Psy-changeling covers)
2. He is a tortured hero.. literally!
6. I agree, I quite like when the author uses formatting to help make the dialogue more realistic. Things like stuttering, a... pause or an- interrupted sentence or italics to stress a word. They all give the reader a real feel for the way in which the characters talk.

#1 - LOL! Yeah. She is a bit of a
#3 - Oops! Did I speak to soon? Oh, well. I kept my lips zipped all these times b/f.
#5 - Hey! I may wear the same style most everyday, but in my youth! **Lisa Kay sighing again** Love to look at the fashions still.

#1 - Oh? I'll have to take a closer look at the Psy-chaleling covers.
#2 - LOL!
#3 - Ditto!

Man I wish I had the book already! CaroB's questions look interesting :D"
CaroB and I will be trilled to respond to your answers, Tracey! Looking forward to them. :o)

7. Were you surprised that the danger to Emma was not a big, strong, stubborn, Lykae male but vampires? Not really. I’d read the previous book, so I knew thy were looking for her, plus I figured if they were mates, he wouldn’t really mean her harm.
8. What do you think of Emma’s Valkyrie aunts back in New Orleans? Aunt Regin (the Radiant) is the one who programmed her cell phone with the Crazy Frog ring tone and is giving her grief about “going dental with some dude.” What do you think of her vernacular? Her attitude? Do any of the others stand out? I love these women! So much humour in their characters, in the way they speak. They remind me of some of Shelly Laurenston’s female leads.
9. How hard do you think it was for Emma to grow up in a household that despised, hunted, and killed vampires? (Well, now you know why Emma is still a virgin at 70; lack of a dating pool.) I think that would have been SO hard to know one half of what you are is despised. And because she lives with them all, she would probably notice the differences between her and her aunts more than the similarities, accentuating them.
10. “…overwhelmed by universal tales of her fabled beauty…” So, we know Emma was searching for her unknown father, but have you figured out who her mother is yet? no! * Goes back to re-read to see what she’s missed *
11. One of my favorite scenes is when Emma witnesses the two European starlets try to gain Lachlain’s attention with a dropped lipstick – and fail. He only has eyes for her. We find that, though Emma is shy and timid with the lore, she can hold her on against female humans. Comments. I loved that scene too! So sexy to be the recipient of that kind of focus! And I guess ti would make sense, no matter how weak/meek she’s still half valkyrie.
12. We know Emma cannot lie and she is afraid of pain. What did you think of Emma’s plea for Lachlain to try not to hurt her. Think it will make an impression on him one way or another? Definintely will, especially as they bond more.
13. What did you think about Nix’s knock-knock joke message? That made me crack a smile. What a tease!
14. When is Emma going to get some blood? What will happen if she doesn’t? If needed, how will Lachlain go about getting blood for her? She better get some soon! I’m really hoping he doesn’t end up holding someone down for her, but think it more likely he’ll offer up himself.
15. What were your thoughts on the fight scene at Val Hall Manor near New Orleans? Which of the vampires stood out to you and why? Anything they said or did that peaked your Spidey scenses? surprised by the demon vampire, and Ivo. I was more interested in the other Lykae to be honest.
16. Lachlain has a lot of conflicting feelings toward and wrong assumptions about Emma. When is he going to figure it out? Let’s hope before the next full moon? he better!!! I just can’t imagine how they could get over it if he ends up hurting her.
17. Uhhh, Lachlain tore up the hotel room while Emma was sleeping. What adjective would you use to describe that? psycho. Creepy. Scary.

First off, I had a ☻pumpkin coffee☻ today – so no telling the typos I’ll make… but here goes. (I don’t usually drink coffee, so I’m a little jittery, LOL!)
#7 – See, I couldn’t get into the prequel when I first read it. I was lost. But, I love Ms. Cole, so I gave her a shot with this one and I couldn’t put the book down after opening it.
#8 – Yes! Funny group of diverse women. Yet all lore creatures. Shelly Laurenston?? I’ve never read anything by her; a new-to-me author I’ll have to check out. Her title are a bit tongue-in-cheek.
#9 – Good point about the accentuating.
#10 – Yes, this totally went over my head the first time I read the book. But it is fun to catch all the “obvious” hints on the re-read.
#11 – Perfect adjective for the scene: Sexy!! And she is half Valkyrie.
#13 – Oh, Nix is a BIG tease, though the whole series.
#14 - **Lisa Kay snickers**
#15 – Ah, yes, CaroB! The other Lykae. Interesting, huh? So you didn’t mind being pulled away from Emma and Lachlain’s story?
#17 – All Perfect Adjectives.

Must say, you're doing very well not giving anything away with this being a re-read for you!
#15- I don't mind being pulled away, I figure with this being a series, there needs to be a certain amount of set-up in the general action so it builds interest in the next book.
Have you read the rest of the series?

CaroB’s Questions for Prologue – Chapter 4
1. How much does the book cover affect what you expect from a book, going in? As far as I’ve been able to see, there are only two English covers for this book. This one (US) and this one (UK). Which one do you have? Which is your favourite and why?
I have the US version and agree with CaroB that her clothing doesn't fit her character as described so far. And Lachlain wants to keep her as covered as possible, as dominating as he is I couldn't see him allowing her to wear that.
2. What do you think of the Prologue? Did it build up your interest or gross you out? What are your first impressions of Lachlain?
The prologue was unsettling. Tearing his own leg off was kind of gross, the fact that he did it to reach a woman was kind of romantic. However his treatment of that woman in these first few chapters has not been romantic at all. I did like how the author put in quotes from her characters just before ch 1 that was an interesting way of introducing the reader to each of their different personality types. But so far I'm not a big fan of the caveman mentality that Lachlain has shown.
I like Emma. She's obviously sheltered and fragile and has a lot of room to grow as a character and come into her own. Sometimes a heroine being a virgin can seem a little unrealistic but in her case with the supernatural element and her being one of a kind it's more believable.
4. Were you surprised at how early on they got nekkid? Are you a fan of early hot-and-heavy or do you prefer when the story eases into it? (no pun intended, heehee)
I prefer a bit more build up before characters get nekkid :). I also prefer for it to be consensual and not bordering on rape. The whole pretense of her being his captive and him not caring for her at all makes it hard to enjoy those scenes. It's not romantic. She's terrified and he just wants to get off.
5. Do you think she would have jumped?
Yes, if he came at her in a rage I think she would have jumped to escape. I believe the only reason she didn't was because he had calmed himself and tried to open up a bit.
6. How are you finding the writing style? The pace? Are you seeing the spots of humour in Emma’s internal dialogue?
I think we've been thrown into this scenario as unexpectedly as Emma was. There was no introduction of characters, no build up to their intro. We are learning about them as they learn about each other. So far I like Emma, I don't like Lachlain. I hope that changes.

I do think the author nicely set up these character to grow. Emma to be stronger and Lachlain to be softer :)
I do love the dialog written to express an accent. Still trying to figure out how to pronounce "Doona". Lol

#1 – Oh, yes. He is pretty “dominating” and he likes her to wear that kind of thing just for him. I love that he is always picking something out for her to wear.
#2 – I’m usually not a big fan of the caveman mentality either. I don’t know why this one worked for me. Probably b/c it opened from his POV and I bonded with him first. I remember when I read that shower scene and having my eyebrows to my hairline. Instead of being disgusted, I was like “Whoa!” Maybe I set a different set of values for them as they are of the lore. **shrugs shoulders** Or maybe I was just menopausal, LOL!
#3- I concur!
#4 – I usually don’t like when the hero doesn’t like the heroine; however, I think KC does a good job of showing his conflict, IMHO. I don’t know why this one worked for me. I do know I have read several reviews from people who do like that sort of thing and they did NOT live this book. Interesting. Maybe I’m somewhere in the middle and didn’t even know it.
#5 – I think you are right about his calming stopped her from jumping. Good point.
#6 – I hope your feelings toward Lachlain change too, Tracey!

I do think the author ..."
It's that opposites attract scenario, isn't it Tracey? An oldie, but Cole makes it work very well, IMO.

1. I thought that too, and then came to the same realisation you have shortly after chapter 4 :-)
2. I liked the quotes as well, if anything it outlines their differences more clearly right from the word go, and builds the intrigue as you wonder how these two will ever come together happily.

Do you think if more of the beginning had been devoted to Lachlain's desperation and his torment, and then his first few days outside in Paris as he fought the constant rage, he may have become a more sympathetic character right now?

Synopsis:
EXPECT SPOILERS!!!
CaroB, Susan, and I are going to start a "buddy read" of this book soon. You can read the prequel novella, The Warlord Wants Forever, if you want. It's free at: Free Copy of TWWF.
However, I don't think it is necessary for this book. Maybe, for better understanding the series as a whole.
OPTION 1 – Four chapters/day. *PPDQs = Person Posting Discussion Questions
