Timothy Davis | 120 comments Abel's Island by William Steig Abel's Island
Steig creates a wonderful and fun book about self-discovery. The rich, pampered mouse Abel gets swept onto a deserted island, and unlearns all sorts of trash from his former life--such as his prejudice against "low-class" bull frogs when one arrives at the island. He learns the pleasure of using his mouse's abilities (such as gnawing), learns to appreciate nature, learns to make statues, and finally learns how to rely on himself alone for his rescue. Both children and adults will find this book amusing and thought provoking.

Malika Bourne (goodreaaaaaadscommalika_bourne) | 26 comments My grandkids love anything with wizards and fantasy. A non-wizard book thatmy granddaughter shared with me is The City of Ember. I want to read the sequel.
I love Sea Cutter. My grandkids will read it after the track meets and concerts are done.

message 4: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Davis | 120 comments Thanks Malika. I added The City of Ember. Thanks, too, for liking Sea Cutter. I hope your grandkids like it. It sounds as if you might like a "Wizards" shelf.

Timothy Davis | 120 comments Hi Mailka,
Have you tried The Dark is Rising
Best Wishes, Tim :)

message 6: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Stein (girlmogul) | 2 comments I love the Theodosia series by R.L. LaFevers -Theodosia is 12 year old girl in Victorian England who is able to connect to ancient Egyptian magic. A mix of mystery, magic and Egypt - she's sort of like a female Indiana Jones...there are a couple in the series and their a more complex read than some of the other series.

message 7: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Davis | 120 comments Thanks, Andrea, for the recommendation. I've added the Theodosia books to our list. Best Wishes, Tim

Michelle Isenhoff (michelleisenhoff) Ha, ha, I saw several of them when I paged through the shelves - right after leaving that list comment. I saw lots of titles that I want to reread and review this summer, and lots of new ones, as well. Nice work. You've done much more with your Goodreads group than I've done with mine!

I don't know how to promote this group! LOL!

Michelle Isenhoff (michelleisenhoff) Blog, twitter and facebook are probably the most effective, but like everything else, you have to build up a fan base. That's been a slow process for me.

I am always open to recommendations, Tim. My daughter is turning out to be one of those children that isn't interested in fiction. (I'm hoping that will change with time.) She seems to drawn to non-fiction. She loved the "-Ology" books: Egyptology...

She also like those dreadful Ripley's books. She has a vision problem so long texts are difficult, and I'm frequently at my wits end to find things for her read. Homework, fortunately (?!?) takes up most of her free time.

If anyone runs across a book that seems like it would fit the bill, I'll be interested in knowing about it.
