Leah (leahsu) Hi! I'm Leah--another HS English teacher and I love it!

I love fiction but have recently been caught up in non-fiction; I just finished "the Glass Castle" and I want to start "Running with Scissors" soon.

My favorite books are ones by Chaim Potok and my favorite of ALL TIME is Barbara Kingsolver's "The Poisonwood Bible."

message 2: by Jill (new)

Jill Hey Leah. You have great taste in books! Running with Scissors is awesome- Augusten Burroughs is a fantastic writer.

Ashley (readerandwriter) Leah, be sure to read "Dry" by Augusten Burroughs. That is a sequel memoir to Running with Scissors

Christina Stind Hey everyone,
I'm Christina and I live in Denmark together with my boyfriend, our daughter Ronja (almost 4 months old), our cairn terrier Kayleigh and syrian hamster Nefertiti.
I love animals and I love to read! Besides that, I scrapbook, follow NFL and play a bit of World of Warcraft - but all of these are more or less on hold because of Ronja.
I just finished my Master's degree in philosophy and am currently on maternity leave currently.
My favourite authors are Joyce Carol Oates and John Irving - and I think the list soon will include Haruki Murakami as well. I love the Swedish author of books for children, Astrid Lindgren, and my daughter is named after one of her books. :-)

message 7: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 139 comments Hello all! My name is Kathy. I'm a substitute teacher for high school, mostly English. I have taught English and writing for writing portfolios, but I didn't retire from teaching, just started working for my husband's business before they closed it after 50 yrs. in operation. I got to do two long-term English subs last year for teachers on maternity leave and loved it. I have a Masters in Library Science and would love to find a high school librarian (or media specialist, as it is now called) position, but they are hard to come by around here. My husband is in the Army and just returned from Qatar today. He will fly home tomorrow for the Christmas holidays. Yay!

I love all different kinds of books, but my favorite is mystery with historical fiction added in. Some subjects that interest me are book censorship (against it, of course), the Black Death (both in the 1300's and 1600's) in England, boys and reading (did my research paper for my Masters on this subject), the Middle Ages, dowsing, and much more.

Some favorite authors are Laurie R. King (her Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series), Edgar A. Poe, Khaled Hosseini, Agatha Christie, Sena Jeter Naslund, Ariana Franklin, Geraldine Brooks, Sue Monk Kidd, and Amy Tan. Some favorite books are A Widow For One Year by John Irving, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, The Girls by Lori Lansens, The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Mistress of the Art of Death and City of Shadows by Ariana Franklin, Ahab's Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund, Saving Fish From Drowning by Amy Tan, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, all the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes books by Laurie R. King, Doomsday Book by Connie Willis, Stones From the River by Ursela Hegi, the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris, the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, the BFG by Roald Dahl ... OK, I have to stop now. I have at least 50 favorites.

Anyway, I love to read. I just finished Company of Liars by Karen Maitland and loved it.

message 10: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 7 comments Hi! My name is Kelly, I am 25 and I live in Southeast Missouri. I teach Kindergarten through fifth grade music to some wonderful students, and I also assist with the high school band. After school I give private lessons on guitar, piano, snare drum, bass guitar, and voice. It keeps me busy. I live alone...well, not exactly alone, I have two cats, Ally and Allera and a beagle/lab mix, Tucker. Tucker and I love to go for walks around our town...he also REALLY enjoys meeting new people.

I enjoy reading for pleasure, but I usually don't have time for it (although I am carving time into my schedule). My favorite books are Gone with the Wind and Pride and Prejudice. But I am always willing to try new books...who knows I might find a new favorite (Julia's Chocolates is definately a runner up!)

message 11: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm Lori. I'm a 21 year old English major. I'm from Oklahoma (and I can't wait to get out of here). I love reading. That was why I became an English major, which was a bad idea. I keep having to read books because of the author, rather than the actual merit of the book and it drives me insane.

I generally avoid doing my homework so I can read for me because I think I get more out of reading something I like than whatever the professor assigns. I do feel a little guilty, but that also makes the reading all the more precious. I carry big purses with me because I always bring a book along, no matter where I'm going.

I don't think I could pick a favorite genre or author. But I love Gone With the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, Catch-22, and Pride and Prejudice. One of the books I'm currently reading (I'm reading 7) is Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and I really like it, so it might be a favorite someday.

And that's enough for now.

message 12: by Daybook (new)

Daybook Hi I'm Daybo. I live in Puerto Rico right now where I tutor three little children whose parents thought home-schooling was a good idea but then changed their minds and brought me in.

I am currently reading an Agatha Christie novel. First time I have ever read her books. So, far I am liking it. :~)

message 14: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (spedkristie) I'm Kristie, almost 30 (less than 12 days). I am an unemployed teacher.....(the politics in schools sucks). I live in Jersey with an immature roommate. I coach field hockey and am in our busy indoor season right now.....It takes over my life and my reading time. I tend to be MIA over weekends. I love just about any genre, except romance, but I can choke down an good fantasy novel. I love Jodi Piccoult, Harlen Coben and Richard Laymon!

message 33: by Tricia (new)

Tricia | 7 comments Hello! I just joined the group so I thought I'd add my two cents. I live in England, but I'm an American. I's stationed here with the military for another 1 1/2 years. I'm 25, I've been married for almost five years and I'm loving life right now. I've been an avid reader since before I can remember and read as much as I can. If a book passes the good-first-page test I give it, I'll read it. I like to travel and have had ample opportunity since I moved to Europe. I miss America though and look forward to my trip back this summer.

I also read through the other posts and want to say Happy Birthday to Kristie! (message 18)

message 39: by Lea (new)

Lea | 6 comments Hi! I've been on goodreads for awhile now, but just stumbled on this group. When I saw the list of books you've discussed I realized that I've either read or wanted to read all of them. I'm afraid that I don't have anywhere near as much time to read (or to participate online) as I would like to, but I'll definitely try to keep up with your reading, and will check in with you whenever I can. Happy reading!

Amy | 7 comments Hello, I joined last week but didn't have a chance to intro.
I love to read biographies, fantasy, erotic and non-fiction. I have had a hard time pulling my self out of the JF and TF section of the library. Lately, I have been reading some fiction. Trying to increase my horizon. I enjoy the four seasons of Michigan and work as a Librarian Assistant. Hope to have some good discussions on the monthly books.

message 47: by Jaime (new)

Jaime Hello,

My name is Jaime and I live in Central New York State in a rural town called Deansboro. I am a stay-at-home mom to a two-year-old boy. In my spare time(which is rare these days), I love to read.

I enjoy reading a variety of books, mostly fiction. Some authors that I really enjoy are Richard Russo, Jodi Picoult, Tom Robbins and Sarah Waters. It's actually been some time since I've read anything by any of them though!

Glad I found this group on my favorite site!

message 48: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) Hi Jaime, Welcome to the group....welcome to everyone else who is new too!!! :~)

message 49: by Jaime (new)

Jaime Thanks Lisa and Emilee!

message 50: by KrisT (new)

KrisT That is funny Emilee, because when I joined you had the cute kitties together and I loved that. It made the group seem like my kind of place then I came back to Enrique and I was thrown for a loop. While cute it does not give off the same vibe as kitties or smurfs. ;)
