Because I always hear about books I like the sound of and then forget what they are.

Must remember to read some Haruki Murakami books. I am also going to get the rest of Neil Gaimans' and will also try the Magus of Stonewylde books at some point.

Whilst I was ordering my November book I found Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman and Magus of Stonewylde cheap on play so have ordered them both :)

Going Out

I really enjoyed 'the end of Mr Y' so have been looking at her other books. Judging by Amazon reviews her books are marmite but this one had the highest number of stars - of course that doesn't often mean it's a good book but I shall keep an eye out for a cheaper copy than the Amazon ones

I am going away for a few days and will have some extra spare reading time :) I am taking Anansi Boys, The Help and am pinching the new Victoria Hislop book from my mum to read.
Have still not remembered to buy the 2 books I posted above but my friend recently lent me 'Dissolution' which wouldn't have been something I'd have bought myself but was reasonably good. A 'who-dunnit' so nothing earth shattering but a decent read.

I was very good and haven't started Anansi Boys yet!

I read 'The Thread' by Victoria Hislop which was similar to her other books in being based in the past, this time in Thessalonika during WW2. Easy to curl up and get lost in for a few hours without requiring any deep thought.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Can't put this down, want to know what happens - will Skeeter and Aibileen get found out? what will happen to them? It's so desperately sad in places but brilliant and often funny too.

It's 451 pages but so easy to get into that I read 200 pages last night! The characters are well written, you will hate some of them and love the rest. I will probably watch the film too but I always prefer to read the book first :)

I have been looking at the picture from the film on the front of the book and thinking 'that's not what they look like!'

It is one of the best books I have ever read and the film didn't let it down!

I finished it in 2 days, and stayed up far too late reading but I loved it. I will watch it on dvd as soon as it's out I think.

For once I don't have any new books waiting to be read! so I am going to re-read something, probably either
The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson

or The End of Mr. Y by Scarlett Thomas

I am dying to read Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman that I got for Christmas but am being good and reading Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie for this months book first.
It's not really grabbing me so far, but I voted for it so shall persevere. After that I am going to re-read The Raw Shark Texts because I love it, and then will see if I can find Florence and Giles from the library. By which time it will no doubt be February and I will have a new monthly book or 5 to read ;)

I'm struggling with Half of a yellow sun. It might be because my head is full of fog though, so I feel like something 'fluffy' and easy to read

Did you finish Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie wondered if it was any good?

message 17: by Jo (new)

Jo | 592 comments Mod
No I'm ashamed to say I abandonded it at page 29 :o
I just didn't get into it and wasn't in the mood for 'plodding on' with it, iykwim? I may go back to it at some point though as 29 pages isn't much of a chance to get into it.

Yes I absolutely know what you mean, I was the same with The Icarus Girl by Helen Oyeyemi I so wanted to love it but it just didn't pull me in sadly :(

I am trying really hard not to buy any more books at the moment. I must renew my library card so I can borrow monthly books instead of buying them.
I am nearly finished Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende and my friend has just given me
Meltdown by Ben Elton
and I've still not read Neverwhere yet!

I renewed my library card today. Our library is teeny tiny so had none of the books I wanted but I can order them in from bigger libraries in the county.
Also i checked and the library in a near town has
The Waiting Room by F.G. Cottam
so I might go and get it tomorrow :)

I'm doing really well at not buying books, although I might struggle when the library doesn't have the monthly books available. The only problem is not being able to read in the bath!

I've really enjoyed the 2 previous Scarlett Thomas books I've read and now I'm not enjoying this one

Our Tragic Universe by Scarlett Thomas

I hate it when that happens, you get excited to read a book by an author you enjoy and then 'meh'

I've not updated this in ages - still being quite good at going to library instead of buying but did buy the Bradbury book for this months read as it wasn't in the library stock and 'Shadow of night'.
Otherwise I've been using the library for monthly books and some people have very kindly sent me books. I've got through 2 and a half of the Game of thrones books, another 2 and a half to go!

I just finished The End of Mr. Y by Scarlett Thomas and totally loved it! I loved it so much I went straight onto Amazon and ordered Our Tragic Universe by Scarlett Thomas , Popco by Scarlett Thomas and Going Out by Scarlett Thomas - fortunately they had used copies that were really cheap. And now, just because it kept being mentioned, I'm reading Erewhon by Samuel Butler . I love it when you discover a new author and get all enthusiastic.

I love the feeling of discovering a new author that I like and usually go and seek out other books too (Betty Smith was my recent discovery) x
