Does anyone do reviews of indie literary novels? The amount of genre titles in indie is disheartening to authors who take the quality of their writing seriously. We desperately need discriminating reviewers who expect boldness, originality and high standards.

I can understand you feel a bit swamped in the indie genre influx, but to imply that because a book is genre the quality of the writing is somehow not up to standard seems a bit counter-productive if you're seeking reviews. Many genre authors like me also review books, all types of books.

Seems I've shot myself in the foot. I hope it won't prove to be fatal. Of course genre writing can be fantastic. But your word "swamped" pretty well nails how I feel as a "literary" indie author. I even find myself avoiding that word, "literary", to describe what I do. "Mainstream" might do, but I've never considered myself very mainstream. Anyway, my apologies to all genre writers and reviewers. I think I just needed my lunch. If I haven't offended every potential reviewer, I'd still be happy to give you a coupon code for one or more of my books, hoping you will be more even-handed than I have been.

Morgan, and A.F., I don't think you two are on opposite sides of a midpoint so much as engaging in semantics. Literary works are by their very nature, genre. Perhaps the difference,if there is one,is the connotation of literary. In its simplest terms literary means "concerning books." Perhaps the misalignment is a generational one? Contemporary writers, with the possible exception of academics, are all genre writers. In the field, one might jump to the conclusion that a more erudite piece, more sophisticated piece would be more literary. My theory is that that concept is only inflating the term literary. Writing falls into two broad categories, fiction and non-fiction. That's enough until we get to the actual genre. And like denominations of Christianity, there are at least 400 or more! So we are all on the same side. :)

Hi Tara. Do you review children's books at all? If so, do take a look at The Secret Lake and get in touch if it looks of interest. It a time-slip mystery adventure aimed at 8-10 year-olds (rather than fantasy) so I'm not sure if it will appeal as it may be too tame! (in which case no problem at all!)

Next week I'm releasing THE MAN CLOTHED IN LINEN, an historical novel that explores the life and times of Jesus within the premise that he was the illegitimate son of Herod the Great. I'm publishing it on all the ebook sites (Kindle, Nook, Smashwords, iBook). Previously I've published a novel, The Way Home, and a memoir of a year in Iraq, Nights in The Pink Motel. Both were hardbound. Good reviews, so-so sales, minimal financial pay-off. So now I'm going to ask for reviews of THE MAN CLOTHED IN LINEN, and see what I can make happen within the blog reviewing community. I'll let everyone know how things develop. Robert Earle

Whitebeard, Literary is a legitimate term for a type of fiction that features imagery, often a poetic, flowing style, attention to traditional conventions like figurative language. Rudyard Kipling is a really good example, since, even when he writes about the mundane lives of British imperialists he throws in the most wonderful imagery and figures. A.F. is trying to distinguish his writing from that which focuses on character, setting, or a particular niche, like Sci Fi or Romance. Many reviewers describe their tastes by genre, and he was only trying to say, "Help! I write great stuff, but I don't fit your genres!" We genre writers shouldn't be insulted either, and he made a very pretty apology.

Not sure if anyone is would be interested but being ther reader bargain hunter that I am I found that http://www.womensliterarycafe.com/ has announced FREE Fridays begining I think in Jan. But they are also looking for book reviewers and of course I know many of you are of course bloggers etc.

I have begun a new book blog - The Virtual Muser eBook Review - in which I will review eBooks only. I have done this mainly because I feel that eBooks have still not been awarded their proper place.

While I personally prefer Literary Fiction,which I consider my own novel - As I Died Laughing - to be, I am interested in reviewing books from many different genres - Indie authors included. My interest, in creating this book blog review, is in relating to the quality of writing: how the characters are crafted, how much the plot excites our interest and makes us feel involved, and the play with words. And we may find a master of the written word in any genre.
