Tanya (tanya_) | 229 comments I was tossing up the The Harafish or Midaq Alley, but if there's a group read on, I'll join in and go with The Harafish (that is, providing I can get a copy).

Hmmm, "Midaq alley" again , It seems I may re-read "Midaq alley" at some point , I do not remember it was that special among Mahfouz work , I need to know more why it is that popular.

It was purely a random choice for me - I wanted to read some Mahfouz, and it looked interesting. Maybe I'll put it on my 2013 list and compare it with The Harafish ..."

Welcome Tanya

I remember when Judy and I first talked about having extra titles and possibly saving them for 2013. It was an oddity. Now it's becoming "talk of the town". I love it. How about you Judy?

I see :) . any way "Midaq alley" is a small book , while "The Harafish" is a bigger one (a saga) , as far as I know ; there are about 5 Egyptian movies based on it .

SUE , I think my TBR list can cover more than 2013 :p

message 9: by Sue (new)

Sue N.D., my TBR for this group will probably cover this group for 2013. My TBR for Goodreads will probably cover the next 8 to 10 years at this year's reading rate!! And of course I keep adding to both (and more are in my head or on paper and not listed here yet).

So Many Books, So Little Time :)

message 11: by Sue (new)

Sue Ah yes, so, so true!! But what a wonderful way to go. Some people fish, we read.

message 12: by Sue (new)

Sue I thought of that after actually, but I was thinking of peaceful pursuits.

message 13: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Mishra (brittanymishra) | 29 comments I was thinking about reading the Harafish and this group has just made up my mind. I'll join you!

message 15: by Mikki (new)

Mikki I thought that I had already signed up for this??? Well, I'm in. April, right?

message 16: by Sue (new)

Sue That's when I have it scheduled Mikki.

message 17: by Niledaughter (new)

Niledaughter Will it be ok to delay this to June ?

message 18: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I would be fine with that. In fact, I would prefer it.

message 19: by Mikki (new)

Mikki June is fine with me, but without the calendar in front of me I seem to remember A Fine Balance to be read in June as well. Anyone else in that group?

Anne (reachannereach) Mikki wrote: "June is fine with me, but without the calendar in front of me I seem to remember A Fine Balance to be read in June as well. Anyone else in that group?"

yes. I'm in that group.

message 21: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) How's August for The Harafish? I have no other group reads that month or after.

message 22: by Mikki (new)

Mikki June is still fine with me for both Harafish and A Fine Balance. I'll just choose novellas for the remainder of the month or just read the two group books.

message 23: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) That sounds like a fine balance, Mikki. Okay by me.

message 24: by Mikki (new)

Mikki Anne wrote: "That sounds like a fine balance, Mikki. Okay by me."

Pun intended I'm sure! :)

Mikki Say what?

message 27: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Mikki wrote: "Say what?"

What!

message 28: by Mikki (new)

Mikki :) Stop it, Anne, or people will assume that we are just hanging out for the free cookies and tea following discussion. Be serious.

message 29: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I'm very serious. Especially when it comes to tea and cookies.

message 30: by Sue (new)

Sue June is OK for me too (or August if that should come to pass). At this point a little delay is fine!

What! Where are the tea and cookies?

message 31: by Niledaughter (new)

Niledaughter I am in for the tea and cookies :)

Well , it can be on 15 June so you can finish "A Fine Balance" .

if you want to delay to August , it is fine too . final Decision ?

message 32: by Mikki (new)

Mikki Okay, so it's sounding like most can do August without problem. What about you, Judy, if we promise to have the cookies and tea during discussions?

So, August?

message 33: by Sue (new)

Sue August would be good for me too. Will it be August then?

message 34: by Niledaughter (new)

Niledaughter ok , August then ...

message 35: by Beth (new)

Susan | 83 comments Maybe. I haven't visited Egypt yet. Has anyone read this?

message 44: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 311 comments Wow. Just finished the book today during a cancellation at work and the gaps between my patients. Enjoyed it and was eager to get back to it during my reading breaks. I will post a review in a bit. I'm packing to go away for a race and for a week of vacation and need to get some laundry started before doing anything else!!

glad you liked it , I wish to be able to join you soon .

Susan wrote: "Maybe. I haven't visited Egypt yet. Has anyone read this?"

I am egyptian , do you want to know anything ?

message 47: by Sue (new)

Sue Finished the book tonight and just wrote my review. I liked it and found the reading interesting and enjoyable. Also found some parallels to Children of the Alley which were interesting in and of themselves. This is lyrically written, with a message it seems, for how to live with one's fellow man. Not many listen or follow.
