Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments I'm just curious what everyone is reading in the last month of the year. I just finished Good Omens, and now continuing on to The Wind Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami.

message 2: by Lettif (new)

Lettif Lapwing 2 days ago I started House of Chains, the 4th in the Malazan Book Of The Fallen series by Steven Erikson. I believe I will be able to finish it within the month.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Got started late on Tigana, which I am enjoying quite a bit. Next up is Hogfather for the December read, and then I believe it will be time for some eni meni mini mo! I have several series that I need to continue and it will be a toss up of either A Dance With Dragons, The Wise Man's Fear, or House of Chains. Can't wait to see which one wins.

message 4: by Traci (new)

Traci I'm currently reading The Wiseman's Fear and Revan (Star Wars). I will read Hogfather. Probably continue with Wheel of Time. Pick up, and backtrack, with Malazan again. And maybe a few other botm books.

message 5: by Margot (new)

Margot (freezebaby) I'm currently in the middle of six different books (eek!) that I hope to have all wrapped up by the end of the year. Fantasy-wise, I'm re-reading The Name of the Wind for the third time, with plans to delve into The Wise Man's Fear in January, if not sooner. I also just started Assassin's Apprentice / Royal Assassin. Eventually I need to get back on the Malazan and Wheel of Time bandwagons. And Greg Keyes The Briar King has been haunting me ever since I read it for this group, so I'd like to pick up The Charnel Prince soon. I also have had A Game of Thrones sitting on my shelf forever.

Argh! Too many books!

message 6: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments I finished Shadowblood by William King and for good measure followed it up with a short story of his, The Graveyard Night. Next up I'm rereading Michael Reaves' The Shattered World for the first time in probably 15 years -- really, really liked that book and its sequel, and am hoping (and reasonably confident) they hold up.

message 7: by John (new)

John Currently reading Stone of Farewell
The Count of Monte Cristo
The Glorious Cause

This month I'm hoping to read
Ender's Game
The Tale of the Body Thief
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
The Age of Innocence
The Bonehunters
A Christmas Carol
The Time Machine

I'm not realistically expecting to get all of these done but what fun is a goal that's easy?

message 8: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Currently listening to Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell which I'm finding very enjoyable... Plan to start Hogfather when I finish. Also reading #5 in David Weber's Honor Harrington series because I'm feeling lazy and these books require little to no thought. Candy.

Bill (kernos) | 324 comments Sandra aka Sleo wrote: "Currently listening to Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell which I'm finding very enjoyable... "

Somehow I cannot imagine Strange & Norell as an audio book. How does it deal with the footnotes?

I'm reading The Children of the Sky by Verner Vinge

message 10: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments Just started on Kafka on the Shore.

Simon Prebble is the narrator and he's very good. He just reads the footnotes at the appropriate place in the text and it works better than having to look at the bottom of the page and then find your place again.

message 12: by Anna-louise (new)

Anna-louise | 81 comments The Eye of the World heard so much about it i figured should give it a go. Two chapters in, so far so good! :-)

message 13: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (yinari) I'm currently reading Memories of Ice. I must say that the series is growing on me, I'm starting to like it more.

message 14: by Margot (new)

Margot (freezebaby) Sandra aka Sleo wrote: "Currently listening to Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell which I'm finding very enjoyable..."

Ooooh. I read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell the first time, but you've inspired me to re-read it in audio!

I've started Fortress of Ice, spent the afternoon reading it and then discover the rain spent the afternoon pouring through my roof and ceiling and onto my bed! Waiting a roofer now.

Sorry to hear that. So either you weren't reading in bed or it's a very absorbing book . . .

message 19: by Terry (last edited Dec 05, 2011 05:28PM) (new)

Terry Simpson | 37 comments Tome Of The Undergates and Mistborn: The Final Empire are my two choices this month

message 20: by Tara (new)

Tara (tarabookreads) I started reading The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

message 21: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 17 comments Hogfather and am planning on reading Warbreaker next.

message 22: by E.W. (new)

E.W. Saloka Winter's Tale, I now remember I read it in my teens. The image of the white horse flying over the city, it was incredible, beautiful writing.

message 23: by Tim (last edited Dec 07, 2011 06:36AM) (new)

Tim (timoerl) I'm currently reading Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky. And, on a very, very, very slow phace, A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin

message 24: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) Leah -- Hunger Games is on my TBR list as well. I'm hoping to receive the box set for Christmas so I can read them in the beginning of the new year before the movie comes out. I feel like I should start a list (or shelf) of all the books I want to read in 2012.

message 25: by Noor (new)

Noor Jahangir I'm reading Render, sequel to Shatter, by Elizabeth C Mock. Interesting characterisation and magic system.

message 26: by Josh (new)

Josh Jordan Finished Creepers last night and started A Crown of Swords today.

message 27: by Ena (new)

Ena (enantoiel) I'm focusing on two series this month: Discworld and Torchwood

So far Discwold first book is a bit dragging, Torchwood's second book is surprisingly quite engaging and considering two other books I've read previously from the Torchwood series I was bracing myself for an another, at best, so-so book. My hope now, is that Discworld books surprises me pleasantly, too.

message 28: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished The Shattered World by Michael Reaves while on the bus back from a concert by the Good Lovelies and immediately started its sequel, The Burning Realm. (Yes, if I'm out and about and I'm near the end of one book, I'll bring along the next one in the queue, just to be safe.)

message 29: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Knight (thomasaknight) I'm hoping to get Wizard and Glass finished, finally... and then get a start on The Eye of the World.

But I read so slow that I may not even finish Wizard and Glass. :/

Joseph | 1651 comments Tim wrote: "I'm currently reading Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky. And, on a very, very, very slow phace, A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin"

What language are you reading Metro 2033 in? I picked up a copy of the English translation last year(?) after finishing the computer game. I'd be interested in other volumes in the series, but so far I don't think anything else has been translated out of Russian.

Fortress of Ice is absorbing but I was reading downstairs. Luckily I have another bedroom so have camped there. I also think they were cowboys, they didn't do whats on the invoice and charged a fortune. Although the leak has stopped.

Masha Toit Leah wrote: "Should be finishing Across the Nightingale Floor by this weekend...

Oh I enjoyed that one, and all its sequels. I recently read the latest one - "The Harsh Cry of the Heron" I think the fourth in the series? I got sort of hooked on these and read them straight through the night at one stage :)

At the moment I'm re-reading Peter Dickinson's The Ropemaker. It is quite a strange book. Dark.

message 33: by Max (new)

Max Just finished my brief pratchett-excursion and continuing on with A Storm of Swords. 1100 Pages to go, at a rate of about 50 pages per hour. Thats about 22-24 hours of reading, and I know how little I read at the moment, so this book will last me a while, I guess.

Also listening to The Blade Itself as audiobook (Almost finished), and will start Before They Are Hanged as soon as i'm done.

message 34: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments I'm currently reading The Night Angel Trilogy, The Way of Shadows. I'm not really impressed with the book so far. The reason maybe I just don't like the way its written.

message 35: by Cecile (new)

Cecile | 61 comments I'm half way through Wolfblade, the first of the Wolfblade trilogy, by Jennifer Fallon, the two other books of the series will be next.

I'm reading Spin which has really pulled me in. Wierdly, I'm finding the odd german word in mine - is the author German?

message 37: by Lilyan (new)

Lilyan Anna-louise wrote: "The Eye of the World heard so much about it i figured should give it a go. Two chapters in, so far so good! :-)"

Yay! New Woter!I duno, I get excited when people read WOT, you'd think it's MY book :P. Enjoy it, this is, in my humble opinion, the best series ever written.

message 38: by Lilyan (last edited Dec 13, 2011 12:48AM) (new)

Lilyan I'm currently reading Hogfather for the December read. It's taking me foreveeer, I've been reading for a week and am still on page 100. HOPEFULLY, if I get it done I'll be reading Lamb The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore , I picked it up at the store along with Hogfather in the spirit of christmas. However, I also have the Wiseman's fear waiting for me on my kindle. I saw that a couple of people have read it this month, is it any better than The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss I was a little dissapointed with the first book, but decided to continue and give it a second chance, any thoughts?

message 39: by Traci (new)

Traci Kevin, I was unimpressed with the Night Angel books too. Maybe too similiar to too many other books?

Lilyan, I loved The Name of the Wind but found the sequel slow and boring. Picks up somewhere in the middle but a (painfully) slow start.

Coming off of a day with no reading trying to read Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Very interesting book just not sure where it's going.

message 40: by Kate (new)

Kate | 42 comments I liked the first Night Angel book a lot, but they declined from there. And I agree about the Wise Man's Fear.

message 41: by Amber (last edited Dec 13, 2011 12:26PM) (new)

Amber Ivers (mohawkguy28) I am reading.Midnight and Phantom

After 200 pages, I find the book to be really good. So basically it had a really slow start.

message 43: by Lilyan (new)

Lilyan Oh no, if the first 1 is better than the second then I'm gonna have a really hard time getting through with this one! But everyone is still going to read the final book right?

message 44: by Traci (new)

Traci Yeah, I plan to read the last one. It's not horrible. It's just...not what I expected. Not much happens. I mean he's a legend right? A myth everyone tells stories about? But it's all about school and getting enough money. Mundane. Boring. The story wasn't pushed forward at all, imo. No answers. Not even hints.

message 45: by Masha (new)

Masha Toit I just finished River Secrets by Shanon Hale. I must say I was a little disappointed. I loved Enna Burning so much, and this one just did not really do it for me.

message 46: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) I finished and love The Annotated Peter Pan (The Centennial Edition) as well as the audio version of The Black Tattoo.

Now I'm starting A Monster Calls and the audio version of Rebel Angels. The first is very intriguing with beautiful pen/paper artwork. The second is the second book in a series which I'm note quite sure I'm enjoying yet.

message 47: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments I finished The Burning Realm, which, like its predecessor, still held up quite well after all these years, and started The Night Circus, which has definitely piqued my interest.

message 48: by Krešimir (new)

Krešimir Vranjković Finished "Ender's Game" two hours ago. Blown away. Starting "American Gods" in a minute, after that it's "Neuromancer", then "Fires of Heaven", and I believe i'll manage to squeeze one more in in December, probably "Old Man's War". Had a good run lately, even with busy days at work!

message 49: by Bridget (last edited Dec 14, 2011 01:52PM) (new)

Bridget Bowers (bridgetbowers) | 42 comments I finished The Deed of Paksenarrion. Now I'm reading By the Sword. In between, I've read The Vampire's Warden and a few short stories that I've come across. I just picked up Sand and looking forward to giving it a read and won a copy of The Twelfth Paladin. So many books, so little time.

Lisa (li2asusanne) Stefan wrote: "I am reading Hexed and listening to the Audible version of Assassin's Apprentice. I am really enjoying the Iron Druid series."

What about the Iron Druid books is appealing to you? I read the first two. I thought the first book was a fun read. The second was kind of a slog for me to get through.
