Most Popular 50 books on GoodReads of All Time in the World

I was going to point out how silly it is to have Twilight, or any of Meyer's books, up there, but then I saw that it's a Popular list as opposed to Best list. I didn't find the series good at all, and can't comprehend how it got to be so popular and even get compared to the Harry Potter books. But I guess if Eragon could sell, anything can happen.
Way to go Mitzie! I've only read 19 of those.
Agree with your comment on Twilight. I only read the first book and don't really feel the compulsion to read the rest. I wish North & South made the list - my fave next to P&P.

I'm loving the Twilight series right now - hope you like it, SouthernBelle!

I have read 25. Didn't finish another 3. Got maybe 6 or so on TBR
The fact that this is from GR makes all the sense in the world about how the list was created.

I'm with MItzie in wondering why Stephenie Meyer's books (note the plural) make it in this list, while Tolkien's The Two Towers and The Return of the King didn't. I suppose it indicates that Goodreads users are predominantly young, female, internet-savvy (since the Twilight series used a number of internet promotion strategies to ace the market) and US-based, but then again I could be wrong.
It would be hard to decide which of my favorite books I would want to see on this list. William S. Maugham's "Of Human Bondage" would be one, I suppose. And "Good Omen" (Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman), is another. Then there's Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes". And at least one or two books from LeGuin's Earthsea cycle, "A Wizard of Earthsea" or "Tehanu", maybe.

I want to pretty much read every book on the list that I haven't already read. I was surprised by some of the books. "To Kill a Mockingbird" was number 2? Hmm, interesting.

I really enjoyed the Twilight series. They seem to be either a love it or hate it thing.

Angels and Demons is on the list? My goodness. That book so did not grab me that I couldn't finish it. I knew it was popular, but no idea it was THAT popular.
I'm surprised Gone with the Wind is not on there.

I own 11 more that I haven't read yet
Little Women, The Time Travelers Wife and The Lovely Bones are overrated in my book...
Most of the books I love seem to be less popular than most. My tastes seem to be different from most people. That's OK.

Harry Potter gets the percentages pretty high right off the bat, 9 of 10.
I have to read Catcher in the Rye.

There's only a couple of books I'd like to read on there that I haven't yet...Middlesex by Jeffrey Euginides and One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

I just thought it was odd that out of the top 10, seven are the Harry Potter books. Like I said before, I enjoyed reading the series.
I wonder if they'll be permanently on that list, or if another reading trend will come along and change it.

Oh I absolutely agree. It is, after all, a "most popular" list, and obviously reflects who they are. I was just having a moan!

OMG, the book is three million times better then the movie. The movie is utter and complete crap. And the second book is the worst! Please don't do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Khaled Hosseini is one writer i haven't gotten a chance to read as yet, together with Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series and Sue Monk Kidd.
The list isn't in order of popularity right, since Stephanie Meyer seems quite a common read to date and should be a bit higher up with the JK Rowlings. Anyway quite interesting list.

Of the 32 I've read, all are good!!!!
Now I'm challenged to read a few of these. I really want to read Eat, Pray, Love, and some David Sedaris.

How many of the above list have you read?
Which ones have you been wanting to read but just haven't? How many are there?
Which book do you think don't deserve this popularity?
What book have you read, really liked, and you would expect it to be on the list but isn't?
