Sandra (sleo) | 1059 comments It's time to start nominating a fantasy series to start in January. By the time we nominate and vote, 2012 will be upon us! Please post nominations here.

EDITED 12/6/11:

All nominations need to be seconded, and please check the group bookshelf for series already read. Also I'm creating a folder with a list for series we've already read, so check there.

message 2: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments Do we want the series to be finished? I know we have Janny's series in the wings waiting for several more books. I'm just not sure we want to do another series that isn't complete.

message 3: by Kerry (new)

Kerry (rocalisa) | 50 comments I would like to reread Jennifer Roberson's Cheysuli series, which begins with Shapechangers. I believe the series is currently available as a set of four 2-book omnibuses, the first of which is Shapechanger's Song.

message 4: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments I'll go ahead and nominate a finished series, just in case.

I'm nominating the series 'A Trial of Blood & Steel' by Joel Shepherd. There are four books in it. As far as I know it is finished. I've heard good things about this. It's one that is certainly less known. From what I've read about it, it is a female warrior type of story.

Starts with: Sasha Sasha (A Trial of Blood & Steel # 1) by Joel Shepherd

Hmm. Good question. I guess it would be nice, but it could be up to the group as to what they vote for. Probably we should indicate whether the series is finished or not.

message 6: by Dani (new)

Dani (daniphantom) I'd like to nominate the Inda series by Sherwood Smith (finished)

message 7: by Maria (new)

Maria Itliong | 1 comments I would love to nominate two series one is by Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunters Series and the other one is by J.R. Ward The Black Dagger Brotherhood

message 8: by Gabriel (new)

Gabriel The Skystonethe camulod chronicles by jack whyte finished

Odalisque finished, but i think there is another trilogy set in this world.

message 9: by Traci (new)

Traci I'm not sure if you all would consider this fantasy or not but I'm nominating it anyway. The Gunslinger. And yes it's finished.

message 10: by Maggie, The Malazan Queen of Chaos (new)

Maggie K | 1209 comments Mod
I know....The Stone Dance of the Chameleon series by Ricardo Pinto. First book, The Chosen. Epic fantasy set in the Mayan culture. Good world-building.

message 11: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) Being interested in world building, I would be keen to read The age of discovery series by Michael A. Stackpole

message 12: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'll nominate the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher again. It's 5 books starting with Academ's Fury. Not great literature, but an easy, fun read.

message 13: by Likos (new)

Likos X (likosx) | 10 comments I'll second The Dark Tower series by Stephen King as suggested by Traci...
Yes it's a finished series, but (according to wikipedia) an 8th book is scheduled to be published in the first half of 2012, and it will be chronologically set between books 4 and 5.

message 14: by Traci (new)

Traci :) I was thinking it but so many people hate on the last books...

Do we second in this club too? If so I second The Wheel of Time.

message 15: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn (seeford) I'll second the Cheysuli series by Jennifer Roberson!

message 16: by Margot (new)

Margot (freezebaby) Are trilogies okay? If so, I nominate Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogy -- first book Assassin's Apprentice. I also second The Dark Tower series and The Eye of the World.

message 17: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments We just read the Farseer Trilogy a few months ago. Right now we're reading the Liveship Traders. Go ahead and look at and contribute to the discussions there.

You can pick something else if you'd like to nominate another.

Margot (freezebaby) Amelia wrote: "We just read the Farseer Trilogy a few months ago. Right now we're reading the Liveship Traders. Go ahead and look at and contribute to the discussions there.

D'oh, sorry. Didn't remember seeing Farseer as a series pick. Guess I overlooked that.

message 19: by B.K. (new)

B.K. I would like to nominate the Saga of Recluce by Modesitt L.E. Jr.. The first book in the series is The Magic of Recluce.

The Magic of Recluce (The Saga of Recluce, #1) by L.E. Modesitt Jr.

message 20: by Dionis (new)

Dionis | 1 comments I'll second the Saga of Recluce nomination.

message 21: by Evan (last edited Dec 06, 2011 11:56AM) (new)

Evan Edwards (sire166) patrick rothfuss's kingkiller chronicles. My favorite series of all time and also song of ice and fire by george rr martin. A close 2nd

message 22: by Helen (new)

Helen | 1 comments Okay, not sure if we can nominate two series but message 7 does so...

Riyria Revelations: Michael Sullivan which starts withThe Crown Conspiracy. They have been re-released by Orbit with 2 books combined in a newer title.

Inheritance trilogy: Jemison. Which is 3 books The Broken Kingdoms

I haven't read either series (well, I did read the first book of Sullivan) but have heard good things

message 23: by Mat (new)

Mat I want to nominate Andrzej Sapkowski's series about the Witcher.
I've read it few years ago, and it is still the best fantasy I have ever read.
I think it will be interesting for most of you to read some fantasy that is not form English culture.

Starts with Blood of Elves

message 24: by Lettif (new)

Lettif Lapwing | 4 comments I have played both games of The Witcher and I didn't know that there were books around it. I am marking it as to read, but I still have to finish the Malazans...

message 25: by Kara (new)

Kara (sterlink) | 60 comments Helen wrote: "Okay, not sure if we can nominate two series but message 7 does so...

I'll second it.

message 26: by Bill (new)

Bill (kernos) | 59 comments I'd suggest The Chosen by Ricardo Pinto vol 1 of the trilogy Stone Dance of the Chameleon.

message 27: by Brent (new)

Brent | 39 comments I would second the Wheel of Time series. I agree that would be a perfect time to start that series.

message 28: by Amelia (last edited Dec 08, 2011 09:22AM) (new)

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments Seconding a series is a new thing for this group. If we need seconds, a lot of series haven't been seconded yet. I counted 16 nominated series and only 7 have been seconded.

Seconded series:

Cheysuli Shapechangers - Jenifer Roberson: nominated by Kerry, seconded by Carolyn

The Dark Tower The Gunslinger - Stephan King: nominated by Traci, seconded by Likos and Margot

The Stone Dance of the Chameleon The Chosen - Ricardo Pinto: nominated by Maggie and resuggested by Kernos, so a second, I would think

Wheel of Time The Eye of the World - Robert Jordan: nominated by Nicki, seconded by Traci and Margot

The Saga of Recluse The Magic of Recluce L.M. Modesitt: nominated by Brian, seconded by Dionis

The Riyria Revelations The Crown Conspiracy or Theft of Swords, which is the Orbit release - Michael Sullivan: nominated by Helen, seconded by Kara

Codex Alera Academ's Fury - Jim Butcher: nominated by Jim, seconded by Amelia

The Witcher Blood of Elves - Andrzej Sapkowski: nominated by Mat, seconded by Helen

The Camulod Chronicles The Skystone - Jack Wyte: nominated by Gabriel, seconded by Amelia

Age of Discovery A Secret Atlas - Michael Stackpole: nominated by Lee, seconded by Amelia

Shadows of the Apt Empire in Black and Gold - Adrian Tchaikovsky: nominated by Yvonne, seconded by Nicki

The Inheritance Trilogy The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms actual 1st book - J.K. Jemison: nominated by Helen, seconded by Yvonne

Kingkiller Chronicles The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss: nominated by Evan, seconded by Daric

Trial of Blood & Steel Sasha - Joel Shepherd: nominated by Amelia (me), seconded by Daric

Fortress Series, Fortress in the Eye of Time - C.J. Cherryh: nominated by Jon, seconded by Brian

Not Seconded

Inda Inda - Sherwood Smith: nominated by Dani

Dark-Hunters Night Pleasures - Sherrilyn Kenyon: nominated by Maria

Black Dagger Brotherhood Dark Lover - J.R. Ward: also nominated by Maria (If two are allowed)

Percheron Odalisque - Fiona McIntosh: also nominated by Gabriel (if allowed)

I think I got them all. I'll second the Codex Alera Series.

Edited to add new nomination and strike through PNR and to reflect new seconds.

message 29: by Hélène (new)

Hélène (hlneb) I'll have a third vote for Ricardo Pinto's The Chosen.

Thanks Amelia. I did edit my introduction to indicate that we need seconds. People often don't seem to read the rules, however.

Sandra (sleo) | 1059 comments Maria wrote: "I would love to nominate two series one is by Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunters Series and the other one is by J.R. Ward The Black Dagger Brotherhood"

We don't to PNR in this group.

message 32: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) I would like to nominate the Fortress series by C.J. Cherryh. The first book in the series is Fortress in the Eye of Time.

message 33: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments Can we second more than one? There are some very interesting books that have been nominated by not seconded. I'd like for them to at least have a chance to be voted on.

message 34: by Helen (new)

Helen | 1 comments I'll second The Witcher, sounds interesting. I'm just reading book 5 of Cherryh's Fortress series - excellent.

message 35: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1059 comments Amelia wrote: "Can we second more than one? There are some very interesting books that have been nominated by not seconded. I'd like for them to at least have a chance to be voted on."

Sure.

message 36: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments Ok, then I'd also like to second the Camulod Chronicles. I think those look interesting too.

And if I can second a third, I'd like to second the Age of Discovery series too.

message 37: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (yinari) | 1 comments I nominate the Shadows of the Apt series. With the first book being Empire in Black and Gold
Though I'm not sure if it's allowed because it's not finished yet ( I think atleast).

And I second The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms

message 38: by Daric (new)

Daric Christensen (dariclee) | 2 comments Wow...so many books on this list I haven't even heard of!! And I thought I read a lot... But it def helps my to-read list.

I second The Kingkiller Chronicles(not finished) and The Trial of Blood and Steel.

message 39: by B.K. (new)

B.K. Jon wrote: "I would like to nominate the Fortress series by C.J. Cherryh. The first book in the series is Fortress in the Eye of Time."

I'll second this.

message 40: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments Yeah! We got more seconds!

Sandra, when is the poll going to go up? I'm going out of town today and think my online time is going to be spotty if any. I'd like to be able to vote when it comes down to it, but I don't know when it be up or close. I'll be back next Sat. the 17th, so if the polls up still and I wasn't able to vote earlier, I can vote then.

I hadn't decided. What do you all want? As long as we have a series decided by Jan 1, I have no opinion.

message 42: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments Most of the series have seconds. Maybe you could close to new nominations, see if anyone wants to second the two that haven't and put up the pull later today or tomorrow.

message 43: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1059 comments Okay, I'm agreeable.

This thread closed for new nominations. SECONDS ONLY from here. I will post the poll early in the AM tomorrow.

message 44: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1059 comments The poll is up. Hope Amelia can catch it before she leaves and I'm leaving it up 'til the 17th in order to accommodate her plans. :)

Vote here:

message 45: by Maggie, The Malazan Queen of Chaos (new)

Maggie K | 1209 comments Mod
Dang-I love the Wheel of Time series, but that would be way too long in my opinion-14 doorstoppers!
Although I am just skewed after this Malazan reread...I am loving it but its pace is exhausting.

There are some really good series here! About 4 or 5 I would definitely join in on...

message 46: by Mat (last edited Dec 09, 2011 07:41AM) (new)

Mat crossing fingers for Sapkowski - It is absolutely grate (better then the game even ;)) and last but not least I'm writing my Masters about reception of his book :)
Wish I could include goodreads :)

message 47: by Maggie, The Malazan Queen of Chaos (new)

Maggie K | 1209 comments Mod
oh definitely-I was just talking about me personally with Malazan going on....that would make me insane...(I really am not there yet)

message 48: by Margot (new)

Margot (freezebaby) I think it's more the thickness of the books, too (although I'm totally down for WoT). But after trying to keep up with the Malazan read, I had to finally drop off because I couldn't keep up with one Malazan in addition to all the other books I need to read each month.

message 49: by Traci (new)

Traci WoT is a little easier to read. Imo. Malazan is thick both in volume and substance. It can be hard to keep along with the story. WoT is more...straight forward. More character and relationship driven. It's very different. I think it might be easier to handle than it first looks.

message 50: by Lettif (new)

Lettif Lapwing | 4 comments Wot is far less complicated, at least up to the point where I dropped of. But not to get off the topic, I would also suggest The First Law trilogy. Not so complicated, not so thick and quite interesting.
