Why does Conrad dump Belly at the prom?

This is just something I've thought about lately. Why was Conard being such a 'meanie' that night at the prom?

I think everyone's forgetting that Conrad didn't really break up with Belly. Belly basically broke up with HIM. He didn't really put up a great fight when she suggested a break-up, but I do recall that he pounded his fist on his car when she walked away and he called out "Wait"!

Of course, we don't know what was going on in Conrad's mind at the time.. A mother's death is always most tragic, and Conrad was obviously in a state of slight depression.

Yes that's a great question but it has a lot of possible answers..

just to add to the misery that is this book

i think he was going through rough times. 8( He wouldnt be just a meanie because he felt like it, especially to belly. His mom died, and he'd promised he'd take care or jeremiah, and all. poor guy...:(

This also left me hanging. I mean at her prom you couldn't break up with her another time? But again hard times = stupid mistakes

It was a way of protecting himself, because he thinks if he loves her too much and she leaves it'll kill him. But also a way of protecting Belly, as he think he will take his misery of his mothers death out on her. That's what I think anyway.

But you guys, he wasn't depressed...at least not that much. Susannah hadn't died yet, and he'd been weird all night, like he was really dry. Belly caught on and just assumed he was breaking up with her, we really don't know what Conrad was thinking.

I feel bad that his mom died, but he could have fought more for Belly. We all know he loved her, but he never showed it enough. But yes, hard times does lead to stupid mistakes, its too bad his stupid mistake made him lose the one he loved.

Because its Jenny Han, who doesn't want to explain the situation, she just wanted to make him that mysterious guy that hides his feelings from anyone, and then in the last book she just wanted to pretend he always was thas caring of Belly and his brother(!!??) , and that he's not that jerk who he was at 1,2 books. You know, all that romantic stuff that makes me wanna barf. I'll tell you something. Conrad did not care of anyone, ladies. he only cared of himself. And I dont blame it on him, i would like it so much more, if Jenny Han did not tried to asquit him, because he's not that kind of good guys. He's a badass:) So please, dont try to answer this question, because The Conrad in 3rd book is not that jerk in 1st and 2nd i'm in love with)

He was dealing with a lot and belly broke up with him

And he didn’t want to go to the prom in the first place but he went for her

So what I think is because he just got tired of her. But also people who are saying Belly broke up with him isn't true. It may look that way but we all know that Conrad wanted to break up with her and not the other way around. If you guys keep saying this no one will agree because it isn't true. While it look like it is it really isn't. If you guys think about it all she says is what Conrad was going to say. Also we could tell he was losing his love for her mainly because he didn't want to go and he forgot the corsage. I don't think he really forgot it I think he left it there on purpose. Plus him not wanting to dance with Belly at the prom was uncool. So all in all it was because he was losing feelings for her. So no one should blame it on Belly because like I said she was just saying what Conrad was going to say! It's Not Summer Without You
