Anyone have the newest software update yet? Wondering if it's worth manually updating or just wait until the auto-update happens eventually.

message 2: by Jeanie (new)

Jeanie | 4 comments I manually updated my Nook Color yesterday. Nothing monumental but a few new things/looks.

message 3: by RuthG (new)

RuthG I updated mine but haven't really checked it out. Other things have come up. The description of the new features sound very good though.

~Jennifer~ (book_addiction) Installed it today and have had nothing but problems. =/ Words aren't showing up on pages, can't turn pages, and then I have to Force Close.

message 5: by MissSusie (new)

MissSusie I followed the directions and everythings works great for me no problems at all!

message 6: by Neil (new)

Neil (rucknrun) I didn't have any problems either. Netflix is nice. You can read landscape now too if you would like.

The suspense was killing me so I went ahead and did the manual update. Even though I followed the directions, the update didnt install on my NC right away, so I contacted customer support for help. I had to Power Off/On then it worked. I've been poking around with it for a while to see all the features and havent had any problems. Try a soft reset and see what happens. Then I'd recommend checking with tech support.

I had the same problem. It wouldn't recognize the .ZIP file right away, so I rebooted, and it started the update. Honestly, I'm torn on the update. The whole thing seems faster, and the things like Nook friends and LendMe are way better.

The thing that I'm hating is the fact that the "n" button, that used to be a home button, is now the menu key. Meaning it brings up all the things like library, and the store, so there's no arrow that opens the menu on the touchscreen; it's done through the physical "n" key. I don't know why I find that so annoying, really. Probably because I don't like having to rely solely on one process or the other, and having options, but that change is something I'm still not used to yet.

Matthew (swint) I updated a few hours after the update was released. There are a few things I like, and a few I don't like, about version 1.4.1.

Likes:
1. I like how they've redesigned the Nook Store. I like the animated menus and the general layout of the entire store.
2. I like how you can easily edit payment information and Nook gift card information from the "My Account" button at the top of the shop now. Very convenient.
3. I really like the new "popular lists" on the shop homepage. The lists I find best are the Coming Soon and Featured Independent Authors list. Well, and the Nook books under $5 list too.
4. I like how you can see all your books, magazines, newspapers and now, your apps all by accessing your library. The animated drop-down menu for "my stuff" is nice too.
5. Unlike Deidre, who mentioned she didn't like how the N home button now acts as a menu instead of defaulting to a "return to home" button, I actually like having the old menu tied to the home button now.

Dislikes:
1. I'm still disappointed that Nook apps don't have a built-in button to exit the app. The browser, especially, should have a button you press to exit the app. Instead, you have to either press the back button until you've reached the very first page you started on and then once more to close the app. Or just press the N home button, but that causes the browser to load up the last page you visited the next time you open the app. Bleh.
2. I don't like that Free Fridays books no longer show up on Friday mornings on the shop's home screen.

All in all, the update to 1.4.1 is a big improvement for the Nook Color, in my opinion

Deidre (lilredrooster) I suppose that I hate the "n" button being the menu button now, because if that button breaks, there is no other option to pull up a menu and navigate the Nook. There is no softkey method now, as before when you could press the menu bar at the bottom, and I have little faith in hardware options on the Nook being sturdy enough to last a really long time with continued use. Look at the cord; I've had to buy two new ones already, and I've only had mine a year. I'd hate to have the "n" button break and be left with a Nook that is useless for navigating menu functions.

Neil (rucknrun) The wish list in the store now displays the correct price. That was an update I was really hoping to get.

I agree with your list of likes and dislikes. I would add that I like that I can now delete books from my library without going to the BN website. I do this quite often with samples...if I decided not to buy the book or add to my wishlist, I delete it. BUT...I dislike that that I can't return borrowed books directly from the device. I know it'll expire after 2 weeks anyway, so not a BIG issue, but sometimes I finish before the allotted time and I'd like more control there.

The Free Friday book...That annoys me! Maybe a later change - if we complain enough! LOL I know I'll miss a good amount of these books because I dont always remember to go to the BN site to check.

The shop experience is MUCH better. Love that when viewing details for a book being able to seeing suggestions by the same author or additional books if it's part of a series is a welcome plus.

YES! How did I leave that part out?? That's a really neat feature in the shop. And they incorporated it very cleanly I think.

Neil (rucknrun) For the Free Friday book. I just follow the Nook Book news RSS feed. They post it first thing every Friday.

Does this update bring the Color up to speed with the Tablet or are there still going to be differences?

message 16: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (swint) The Color and Tablet have different hardware on the inside. The Tablet will always be "faster" than the color.

Matthew (swint) Anyone else notice a significant drop in battery life for their Nook Color since updating to firmware version 1.4.1? I'm not able to tell whether it's due to the firmware update or because I've been reading more than usual lately.

Matt wrote: "Anyone else notice a significant drop in battery life for their Nook Color since updating to firmware version 1.4.1? "

Honestly I'm on my NC so much that I can't tell you whether battery drain is from the update or just my frequent use. I've noticed a serious depletion of the battery life a while back and had heard that the 1.4.1 update would help sustain battery life.

message 19: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (swint) Maybe it's just that I'm using it more often here lately. Thanks, Tasha.

message 20: by Deidre (new)

Deidre (lilredrooster) I have to say, though, I LOVE what they've done with the PDF reader. It used to be TERRIBLE, and although a lot of my library is PDF files, I would go out of my way to avoid trying to read them, or convert them to EPUB. Now? Soooooo much easier. You can actually see the pages in a preview menu on the bottom, the resolution is a thousand times better on the screen, and the swiping isn't up/down any longer, but left/right, like the rest of the EPUB and reader functions. If only for that, the update was completely worth it.

message 21: by Deidre (new)

Deidre (lilredrooster) And I haven't noticed a battery drain on my Nook Color. If anything, it's actually improved, especially when the WiFi is on. That used to be a huge drain.

Anyone else's NC crashing/freezing since the software update? I haven't turned my device off but maybe 5 times since I bought it in Dec 2010 and since the new software was installed it's frozen while using certain apps as well as while reading book/e-zines. What gives! Is this BN's way of trying to get me to switch to a NookTablet? Hahaha

message 23: by Mimmy (new)

Mimmy (roxym) Hey! I updated my software version last night.

I received "error dialog" messages on books that I borrowed from the library through Adobe Digital Editions. When I reconnected my NC to my laptop and ADE, it asked me to reauthorize my ADE account (which I have done). I have removed all the ADE files from my NC, rebooted it. Rebooted my laptop and then reconnected NC. Unfortunately, all of my ADE files are coming up as "documents licensed to a different user."

I contacted NC software support and they weren't able to resolve it. I'm contacting ADE now.

Has anyone else had this problem or any advice to resolve it?

Thank you!

message 24: by Mimmy (new)

Mimmy (roxym) Solved! I had to go back to the library website, check out, dowload and transfer the files again.
