Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) I joined Curves yesterday. Does anyone here go to Curves? See the link below:
http://www.curves.com/

I hope I can discipline myself to keep going. I need the exercise.

How do you exercise?

Good morning, Joy. Have fun.

I should physically exercise, but I am so busy with mental exercises – I work on my second novel when I am not doing office work.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) Ilyn, I know what you mean by "mental exercises". Actually, I think we think better when we have physical exercise too.

Curves is fairly expensive, IMO. They charge $39 per month. There's a $99 registration fee. If you don't commit for a year, they charge $49 per month. It's actually more advantageous to commit for a year because there is a way of opting out without paying for the entire year. You'd have to talk to them about the details.

I like Curves because it's a well-designed work-out and seems more structured than the other exercise plans that I've been part of. It's takes only a half hour to do the routine and then you're out of there, feeling good, if I do say so myself. (g)

Debra (debrapurdykong) Hi Joy, yes, I've been working out at Curves for 16 months now, and love it. The workout's fast, efficient. It doesn't exhaust, it energizes. In fact, I noticed my energy improving within 4 weeks by going 3 times a week, and an extra walk. It's non-pressured and supportive. Enjoy!

message 5: by Joy H. (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) I agree, Debra. Not only that, but it gets me out of the house. (g) I'm retired and it's so tempting just to stay home and putter. I only hope that my knees and my back don't give out on me. So I'm taking it easy for the first few weeks.

I still have to figure out how the key and the computer work. I think there was something wrong with my key-card because the aid was having trouble with it during the demonstration.

Are you hooked into a computer via the "key-card" when you make the exercise rounds? They say that's why the prices went up. They call it the "Smart" something-or-other. Can't remember.

Steven | 11 comments Getting and keeping your self fit, should really be an agreement with your self and the gym for life. Not a six week wonder as some people believe.

When you're fitter, you feel better, think better and generally, look better.

There's logic there somewhere guys!!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I've never been able to just 'work out'. I've always wanted to do something useful instead. I never have enough time or energy to get all my chores done, even if we only have a small, 15 acre 'gentleman's' farm. Horses need to be exercised, fences fixed, gardens weeded & a ton of other things to be done. Paths in the little, 5 acre woods always need some picking up & the bird houses (over 20) need cleaning & fixing. We tend to do that maintenance on nightly walks with the dogs to let them run.

It's probably not the best exercise program. Visits to the chiropractor are somewhat frequent, but I find it very enjoyable for the most part. It costs a lot more than Curves though!

I attempted to join Curves but there was too much room spray and perfume which gives me asthma. I asked if they had a safe time but of course there was none. Its hard to find any clean air anymore..sigh!

My husband and I walked about half a mile at the Red Rocks Trail yesterday with our little dog. The weather was perfect.

You are lucky to be able to attend a group exercise. Wish I could.

Steven | 11 comments Jim: What a great lifestyle. Out from the city amongst the countryside and wildlife. So natural and beautiful.

My routine in the busy city life is:

Monday: Ninjutsu (2nd Dan Blackbelt Ninja)
Tuesday: Body Pump Programme in the Gym
Wednesday: I Play Tabletennis in the Town Leagues.
Thursday: Body Pump programme in Gym
Friday: Table Tennis (coaching Kids)
Saturday: My Wife's job list.
Sunday: One Hours work out with weights and punchbag in my garage with my eldest son.

All this ontop of a busy job and family life.

For those who do not have the opportunity to attend a gym etc, you can't beat a good walk. Its natural, it doesn't shock your joints and lets you have a look around at the world.

Cheers

Hello Canary. Thank you for joining us.

Hello Jim, Steven, Debra, Joy, and everyone. Enjoy the exercise. Have a happy day.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) My muscles are complaining since I started at Curves. I was there only twice. I'm hoping that I'll become accustomed to the exercise and my muscles won't be so sore.

I'm going to eliminate the exercise which makes me twist my torso from side to side. I think I wasn't ready for that machine.

I'm also eliminating the machine which puts pressure on my back. It's the one where your shoulders push up and your legs are used to give you the strength. It's called the "Squat Machine". See the following demonsration link: ===>
http://www.curvesinformation.com/circ...

BTW, the computer program Curves uses is called "Curves Smart". See the following link: ===>
http://www.curvesinformation.com/curv...

I love walking but not in the cold weather. That's the problem.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) Canary - That's too bad about your asthma. I sympathize with you. I'm allergic to cats. So I know what it means to be allergic.

Steve - That's quite a schedule!

Jim - Sounds like you get plenty of exercise!

Steven | 11 comments Hi Canary, yes I know it its a busy fitness routine. But for me its always been a way of life.

Back in the 80's I was a Marine, nowadays Im a blackbelt ninja.

I like to keep myself fit. Physical exercise is almost as good as good sex. Well.....almost!!!

Cheers

Steve

Debra (debrapurdykong) Hi Joy, sorry for the delay in responding. It's been a hectic week! Our Curves doesn't have the "Smart Card" I think it's called. The owner said there were still a few bugs with the program so she's waiting until they're ironed out. My mom uses a card at her Curves, though. It took her a while to get used to, but she loves it now.

All the best,
Debra

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) Hi Debra,
I haven't been back to Curves this week because of a busy schedule. Hope to go back soon and get accustomed to the new Smart Card. Glad to hear that your mom got used to it.

BTW, as a mystery writer, are you a member of Sister's in Crime? See:
http://www.sistersincrime.org/index.html

Also see:

message 16: by Debra (new)

Debra (debrapurdykong) Hi Joy, yes, it takes awhile to adjust to certain machines, and the squat machine is the one most people skip or modify. It is tough! But keep at the program, and you'll find yourself getting stronger over a fairly short period of time. Good luck!

message 17: by Debra (new)

Debra (debrapurdykong) Hi again, Joy, yes I'm a member of Sisters in Crime as well as Crime Writers of Canada. I'll check out the URL you gave me for goodreads. Thanks!

message 18: by Joy H. (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) Debra, it's so great to meet another mystery writer who is a member of Sisters in Crime, etc. I've got a pile of mystery books waiting to be read. But first I have to finish plowing through _Gilead_. :-(

If you're wondering about _Gilead_, see the following postings:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...

and

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/7...

Someone said "this book [Gilead:]is on the goodreads all-time "unpopular" list." That was at:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/9...
(The link is under the book's icon under a discussion called "people".)

But I'm reading it as part of a group and I'm determined to finish it in order to enjoy the group discussion in December.
