Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments *waves* Hi guys!

Two of my favourite things in world are reading and lists and when put together they make me very happy.

This section is going to be for Challenges! It's a simple concept in which we combine reading with a simple non-competitive challenge for multiple reasons. (Although I suppose if you want, it can always be about how many curries one can eat in one month. We're not fussy here!)

Have you a load of books you bought and still need to read? Do you want to branch out into a new genre but don't want to do it alone? Do you like the colour green and want to do a themed month?

This is a very relaxed group here and as long as everyone is nice and follows the insanely simple guidelines I think we can all have a great laugh as normal.

I only ask two things! Just two!

1. When posting a new topic please ensure your title includes either 'Self Challenge' or 'Group Challenge', the name of your challenge and if you want you can add a set of dates.

(This bit might get a little confusing but the simple difference between Self and Group challenges is that a Self Challenge is generally personal to the poster of the topic, and while others can join in, the main reason for posting it is for yourself. Group challenges, however, are a way of diving into a new challenge all together.)

For example, my first challenge to myself, and anybody else who wants to join, will be to read all books that I have bought for my Kindle but have not read. In theory, by the end of 2012 I will have no bought books unread, and if there is any, they will have *just* been bought. The topic of my title will look like this;

"Self Challenge: Waste not, Want not - 2012"

2. Formatting the actual thread is sometimes a real pain, especially if it includes a lot of books. This ask is quite simple. If you are a posting a challenge, make sure to put something like 'Lets go' or similar at the end of your challenge (It might be an idea if you are using several posts to put it in a new post underneath). If you are observant enough to see a topic as it is just created, make sure you see that 'Lets go' before posting so you don't accidentally put your cheerleading post in the middle of a challenge.

Please note: it would be great if you could add some Amazon links to your threads when you read books - you don't have too but it helps the group if you use the group tag (&tag=ethings-21)

That is it really! I think this thread will be a great way to get suggestions for group challenges so suggest away (or volunteer to host them *wink wink*).

Any questions? I am sure there will be loads. I'm about to write my first Self-Challenge up which, for the sake of this post, will have multiple posts. I'll be back to link it!

Description is not my strong point (there is a reason I'm a reader not a writer...) so feel free to shout at me to change something!

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments My self challenge is here :

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/7...

As you can see I haven't filled in the books yet but I'm doing that now.

It's rather quite simple.

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments My suggestions for a group challenge include;

Monthly themed (Read a certain amount of books with the name of the month in it)

A-Z (As a group, read a book for every letter of the alphabet!)

Seasonal themed (Christmas, Halloween, Easter etc etc)

One of the ones I find really hard but other people seem to really love is cover themes. For example on another group there was a beach challenge in which you had to read 3 books - one with a sand on the cover, one with water on the cover and another with something you'd find on a beach on the cover!

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I think I'll start a Terry Pratchett challenge, I guess it could be self or group is there anyone who wants to join me?

I've been meaning to read all the Terry Pratchett disc world books for the last 6 months and so far have got 4 books down the list, I need some motivation.

message 5: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I've read them all Jud - the challenge is too late for me!

message 6: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Jud! I might join in later if there is no date. I tried to read the first but it made me feel stupid but I'm rest assured that you can start with different books if you didn't find a character to your liking!

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments I've read all the Discworld books except the latest one, so the challenge is too late for me too!!

message 8: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments aw :o( I've only read the first 4 so there is plenty more for me to go.

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments I ll do it but it will happen over a few years I think lol.... Like one every 2 months or something :)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 942 comments What happens if you have loads of series books that YOU know you need to read (and they are paperbacks lol)

message 11: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Go for a Self Challenge Fiona! Like I said above, I want this to be a place for any challenge and we can all cheerlead! I am hoping that after I get my books done this year I'll be able to work on series books I really need to catch up on! (Nothing like planning ahead a year LOL)!!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Erm. Now you have your kindle it will be really hard to go back to dead tree books, Fiona. Is for me anyway. I have a whole shelf full of paperbacks I've been ignoring for over a year.

I know our Jud goes back and forth from her kindle to paper books. Maybe I should ship them to her and just download them...

message 13: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I have a list, Patti, of all the paperback books that I gave away to download when I have the funds. Especially ones in series' I love!

I've missed these last few posts! It has been a while since I last read a paperback now, I do have a couple and tried to start one of them but was too absorbed in my TP challenge to get into them.

I've decided my new challenge for next year already as well.

message 15: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments So I'm going to put up a thread/group challenge thing for the Harry Potter re-read of 2013 (or first time read)

Any suggestions on how you all want it set out? How long for a book? Do we want to do it chapter to chapter and discuss as we go? I want to really, REALLY delve into the books this time so I'm hoping to discuss all of it.

I'll be hosting it and remember to post etc etc (calenders - so helpful) so I'm not begging for help xD just suggestions!

message 16: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Hmmm. I suppose anything is viable if you really do try hard enough to find the books for the challenge!

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Hi guys, I dont know if anyone reads this or not but heh.

I am thinking it might be nice to create our own little read-a-thons since a few of you enjoyed the one I just completed. We can agree on a date/length and we can have fun together.

Also it might be fun to do a themed reading week/10 days or some other length for holidays coming up. I know its really early but we could do a halloween version and maybe a christmas version too. I know I get very busy with University but I'm hoping to be more on-top of things this year and keep up a little better with my pleasure reading.

of course id be happy to start threads for all

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Ok Elle, I am here. Go for it. Just tell me or Patti how we can help.

message 19: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Aw Simon :) Nice to see you pop up! I'll see what other people think of the idea and then decide where to go from there!

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Sounds like fun, Christmas is a bit mental for me what with going home and seeing everyone so I probably wouldn't do that (or just do a very easy one!) but I can do any other ones of course :o)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've been asked to archive old challenge threads.

Please post a note to me in your now defunct challenge thread and I'll archive then as I find time.
