Hello all, this thread is where we can come and chat about life, the universe, everything!

Here we can relax, unwind and vent about our day in general as we get to know each other better :D

I say this, here I am starting a thread when I'm just about to leave work and be offline for a bit, classy right? ;D

LOL. You're too funny Hayley.

What's the best movie you've seen recently? I loved the new Sherlock Holmes. Hilarious and action packed with steam-punk. My kind of movie. And Robert Downey jr. yes please :D

message 3: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 491 comments Mod
Oh I want to see the new Sherlock - but I have been watching the new series of the BBC TV adaptation :D

The last movie was Emma, I recorded it whilst I was away as I was reading the book at the time. Not a bad adaptation, and no complaints about Jeremy Northam in it ;D

message 4: by Adriana (new)

Adriana I love that TV show! I absolutely love the actor of Sherlock. He's perfect for the role. It's weird how one is younger than the other. They usually look much older.

Saw Jane Eyre the other day. Fantastic :D

I've heard lots of people talk about Sherlock. If you guys like it, then I might have to watch it. :) Can you watch it online somewhere??
Adriana, did you see the new Jane Eyre with that girl from Alice in Wonderland?

message 6: by Adriana (new)

Adriana I think you can. I'll have to get back to you on that.

Yep. That's the one!

message 7: by Hayley (last edited Jan 10, 2012 09:58PM) (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 491 comments Mod
Adriana - I agree - Benedict Cumberbatch is brilliant as Sherlock - I just hate that they only do the series in 3 shows :( Altho', I guess it's best seeing as how Martin Freeman needed to go off and play Bilbo in NZ :D

I'm sure there's a way you can watch it online - oh wait, see messages Jessica - this might help!

I quite liked the newest Jane Eyre. Mr Rochester was played quite well, and the idea of flashbacks made it different enough to not be yet another film about the same book :D

message 8: by Adriana (new)

Adriana Yeah buut now the director or writer or whatever Stephen Moffat is going to concentrate on it more but unfortunetely he's going to unfocus himself on Doctor Who. There won't be a new one for a long time...):

I've only seen this version so I can't compare it. I love the actor for Mr.Rochester <3
My mom got totally confused with the flashbacks! I explained to her a bunch of times what happened and she still couldn't get it. I think she just ended agreeing with me at the end to stop me from arguing with her.

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 490 comments Mod
Thanks for the message Hayley! It didn't work (it just took me to iTunes to buy it), but I found a copy at my library. I started watching Downton Abbey last night and I love it! I stayed up waaaay to late watching it :D
I loved the new Jane Eyre! My only complaint was they left out my favorite scene with the creepy bride in her room. Oh well. The rest was awesome.

Hmmph, well that sucks :( usually that one shows all the links you can go watch it on :(

I think I'm up too early - I hafta be but I don't approve of a 5am alarm :S Need to cycle to work during the week and Zumba on wednesdays ends after my bedtime (haha) bring on the weekend!

Adriana - yep, I had a little smile on my face when I found out who was playing Mr Rochester - Michael Fassbender was fab in X-Men: First Class and I wanted to see how well he'd do Mr Rochester.

I expect a mass exodus of twitter unfollowings soon :)

There were one or two 'Follow on twitter' threads that I partook in on other GR groups and, like the nice person I am, I followed them all.

Unfortunately it seems that about half of them posted one thing and one thing only - tweets to advertise their wares. Now, I have nothing against that in general but when it's the only thing that's posted (and done so repeatedly) I do take umbrage.

So I have gone through my 'following' list and unfollowed every person who has had nothing original tweeted and who I know to be filling my feed with bunf!

Once these people are up and about I expect I shall be unfollowed by most, if not all, of them. It's worth it tho' ;D

The occasional tweet that isn't advertising or linking to your blog goes a loooong way ;D

message 12: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 490 comments Mod
Oh gosh, I hope I'm not guilty of this! I remember this one author who I followed on twitter and he had the same three tweets going all day long every day over and over and over. UNFOLLOW. I'm reading my tweets to see if I'm guilty ;) I'm a little happy with the RT button.

message 13: by Adriana (new)

Adriana @Hayley- What do you mean their wares?

message 14: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 491 comments Mod
I know, I've been quiet for a bit too long - but I've been planning... and, amongst other things, I might be getting a cat! I have permission from the landlady and have already seen one at the nearest RSPCA cattery that is adorable looking! I'm going to visit her next Wednesday, then there may be a home visit and then hopefully I'll just need to pick her up (after doing soo much shopping ;P)

Hope everyone else is doing well :D

@Adraina - wares in that sentence is like goods - like a shop sells it's wares :)

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 490 comments Mod

message 16: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 491 comments Mod
Haha, don't worry - I'll be posting pics left, right & centre if I get a cat! Can't wait 'til next Wednesday now :D I've been looking online at all the things I could get her, even my sister wants to spoil her rotten - and she's allergic to cats ;)

message 17: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments So, I feel like the only teenager on planet earth who doesn't have a twitter, hahah. I don't think I even know how twitter works. All I know is it's full of number signs!

Hayley, cats are the BEST! I've never been much of a dog person, hahah. Our cat now adopted us, in fact! She waltzed into our family room, from being a stray, and now she's just ours. <3

message 18: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 490 comments Mod
sdlkfjdfs Thalia you don't have twitter!? I teach you!!!!! The key to learning anything is to jump in a pretend like you know what you're doing. Twitter was a foreign language to me at first so I just stalked people and didn't say much until I figured it out. I'm going to start a twitter thread so we can all follow each other on twitter! :D

message 19: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments If I get a twitter, it'll be so I can enter more giveaways, hahah. Most people are surprised, since I have a review blog, but I'm like, "I talk so much more than a 140 character limit allows!"

Heck, YouTube channel comments have a 1000 character limit, and my conversation with a friend got to a point where they were seventeen comments long, per reply. I don't know how well twitter and I would get along!

I also had to do a "twitter" assignment my freshmen year; I had to write out like, seven tweets from Peter's point of view in Romeo and Juliet! Drove me i.n.s.a.n.e!

message 20: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) I'm not on twitter either. LOL

message 21: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 491 comments Mod
My 2 sisters (almost 18 and 26) don't have twitter either. I do, tweet like mad sometimes - it's terrible :S

@Thalia - I grew up with dogs but guess I consider myself an animal person rather than cat or dog etc - I get on with pretty much most animals :D

message 22: by April (new)

April | 570 comments I have one..and I updated it for this...otherwise I'd never go out there and tweet anything! FB allows me more characters...I'm long winded...anyone notice!?! :) And...if I tweet it changes my fb status (I guess I could change that!) But, Thalia...I'll learn with you if Jessica is willing to teach...I'm twitterdumb!

message 23: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 490 comments Mod
Here's everything I know about twitter (even though no one asked :)

Putting # in front of a word turns it into a link called a "tag". That way you can find tweets talking about a certain subject even if you don't follow them. Like, I found someone trading a book with the tag #Everneath. I also found a bunch of pottermore beta users with the tag #pottermorefamily

When you type someones twitter name starting with the @ sign it sends your tweet to that user. It's called a "mention."

RT means Re-Tweet and it means that someone is forwarding a tweet by someone else.

The first thing you will notice about twitter is that you can only see half conversations going on between people. If you click on a tweet to open it you can see the whole conversation between two people.

That's all I know. If there's more to twitter, I don't know it :D

message 24: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 491 comments Mod
There's not much to twitter - I remember joining not that long after it started and it's changed a fair bit lookswise but still does basically the same stuff as always (except the joy of a 'favourite tweet' button!)

Jessica basically broke it down - tweet what you want to say in 140 characters or less (or you just multi-tweet over 2 or 3 tweets). You follow friends and people you think are interesting tweeters, use @'name' to talk to particular people and Direct Message them if you want it to be private (you can only DM people who are following you). And everything else has been covered by Jessica :)

message 25: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 490 comments Mod
You know what's the best part about twitter? Tweeting famous people. It makes yo giddy when they tweet back!! I've tweeted a bunch of authors that I love and some of them have replied and made my day. My sister-in-law tweets Jerry Seinfeld and Oprah and pretty much any famous person she likes. :D Melissa Joan Hart retweeted some of her stuff WOW right?

message 26: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Sounds pretty simple (and yes, Jessica...we did ask..even if it was indrirectly! )

Thanks for all the info. I still think I like fb better, but i'm a crumedgeny old lady (not really) who likes what I know and changing always takes awhile...so tweet away, and I'll stalk, and maybe everyonce in awhile my birdy voice will flare up in a tweet!~
I'm clicking around more and getting the idea!

message 27: by April (new)

April | 570 comments OK..now I can see the joy in that, Jessica! Hmm..this could be fun!

message 28: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments See, that's why I'd get Twitter. So that I can talk to all my favorite authors, hahah. And see if I can convince them to come to Oregon once in awhile!

Now that you explain it, Jessica, it doesn't sound terribly complicated! Maybe I'll give it a shot sometime. (;

message 29: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) What does that mean, to "tweet an author"?? You just mention them with the @ thing and they... do what? *confused*

message 30: by April (new)

April | 570 comments I'm thinking you could mention them, maybe? I'm hoping maybe instead of talking to my faves...I can turn my husband in to other peoples fave! ") Half the reason i'm on some of these social sites...not goodreads! That's all mine:) although, kudos to him, he's doing pretty well out here!

Does a famous person actually TWEET back, if you tweeted them??? i know my cousin was all geeked up cause he got a re-tweet from some pro wrestler??? funny! I'm probably just going to use it more for chatting with you all about books....
So, Jessica the "list" or whatever it is that you created for booksatruestory=dusty challenge thing...do we still have to put the @ to just show up there? or do all our tweets just show up on that page??? Someday we'll get it all together???

message 31: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Okay, I was totally with you until that last paragraph. LOL

message 32: by April (new)

April | 570 comments that was kind of a ME question, cause I got out on twitter and saw what Jessica did. It would make sense if you saw it:) Sorry...sometimes my mind works way faster, and I skip things when I type..and talk! My husband says he should keep notes! :D LOL!

message 33: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 490 comments Mod
Dalynn - Tweet an author means putting their user name in a tweet and then it gets sent to them so they can read it. Some do actually tweet back! I've had tweets written directly to me from Kiersten White and Brodi Ashton. I also got Ken Jennings to send me a tweet :)

April - Lists on twitter is just a way to keep track of who is who since some people follow literally thousands of users. I just added you to the list (if you're not on my twitter list just tell me! I didn't skip you on purpose I'm just dense!). It's public so if you subscribe to that list you can see everyone on twitter that I've added to that list. I will do my best to keep it accurate! Think of it like the new lists in facebook - it's just a way to look at certain users really fast.

You guys want to see my Ken Jennings tweet (you know, the Jeopardy champ)? Here's how the converstation went:

ME: @mrsLindsayB_ You should follow @KenJennings - he's quite the smart aleck. Who knew?!

LINDSAY(my sis-in-law): @booksatruestory Will following @kenjennings strengthen my at-home Jeopardy game?

ME: @mrsLindsayB_ @kenjennings All signs point to YES. Or you'll just have more smart aleck-y things to say :)

KEN JENNINGS HIMSELF: @mrsLindsayB_ @booksatruestory Results in just two weeks or FULL REFUND!!!

Here's the twitter link so you know his tweet was real :)

Oh my heck I started watching Sherlock and whoever recommended it (namely Hayley and Adriana) I love you! I don't usually like murder mysteries, but this show had so much wit that I am in love! My hubby even likes it and can't wait to watch more with me. No spoilers. I only watched A Study in Pink. Now I want to read all the books so I can be familiar with the cannon.

Yay! Glad to hear you like it :) I just get annoyed that there's only 3 shows in each series, but maybe that's just me being greedy ;D

Also, apologies for my absence over the weekend & yesterday - ystrday i spent most the day feeling ill and the weekend I was out & about or sorting things, I'm sorry :(

I'm off up to Edinburgh Friday to go watch 6 Nations Rugby Match on Saturday :D

message 38: by Dalynn (new)

I am a morning person - just in a different timezone ;)You should see how quiet this site gets later on :(

message 40: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Ya...I get to come in in the morning and make my comments and read what you've all been up to! I'm not a late nighter on the computer...only up till around 11:30, but that's 'hopefully' spend reading:) The last few days it's been spent tending pukie kids...fun,fun! Hoping it stays away from me and the 2 year old...but I probably won't get that lucky! But...at least with all of you on later, I've always got fun stuff to check in the am!

Hannah, I do that all the time too, even at work! In fact you can usually tell when I'm on the work comp the minute you start seeing posts with spaces missing between words - that spacebar is evil (though I do go back through and try to catch them all b4 posting!)

Well, I'm off up to Scotland today to meet up with Dad (and picking up li'l sis on the way) and we're going to the Eng v Scot rugby match tomorrow afternoon. Gonna have great fun and not back home til Sunday afternoon/evening, can't wait but will freeze :S

message 43: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) (psst... should we do a new thread for February?)

I love you ladies! I think this is my favorite group. We're getting all friendly and getting to know one another and that's what makes a good group GREAT! This will be a blast come summer. ;) Just sayin!!

Thanks Dalynn! I love this group, too! :)

Hannah | 38 comments @Hayley: LOL! :D

So I just watched The BBC Miniseries North and South, based on the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell. It was so good I stayed up till 11:15 last night watching the first two episodes. Then I just finished the last to. AMAZING! If you love the old England classics this is a MUST WATCH. :D

Sorry I'm in a ranting mood right now. After-watch excitement!

PS. Also Check out Wives and Daughters Miniseries. :D Same Author for the Book. That one is also scrumptious.

I love North and South, and Wives and Daughters! Cranford is also by Elizabeth Gaskell, although it is a combination of several different books by her. They really wove them together well. Since seeing them, I have been reading her novels. I read her biography of Charlotte Bronte when I was in college, but didn't realize that she also wrote novels, and that is my favorite period, so it's been a real treat discovering her! I've read Wives and Daughters, North and South, and Cranford (but not the other stories included in the miniseries). We discussed them all on the Barnes & Noble 'Literature by Women' book club. I definitely want to read more! I have all the miniseries on DVD. I hope they eventually do more of her works. And Richard Armitage - yum!!! He was also great as Gisborne in the most recent Robin Hood series.

I haven't seen it yet. I don't know if I will. Scary movies are not my thing. I have an overactive imagination :D Sherlock is as scary as I'm willing to get (have you seen Sherlcok? It's not really scary but it has me biting my nails :)

Sherlock is on Netflix! Huzzah, I'll be able to watch it finally, sometime! (:

message 49: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Haven't been able to watch a scary movie since the first kid got here...and I used to LOVE them as a teenager:) Can't really even deal with scary books...just don't do horror well, anymore :}

I'll have to check out the Sherlock...is it a BBC...(I love the BBC mysteries:) But if we watch them too late, we're out...we figured it was because Brittish movies/shows are not like the American crazy music in the background...I actually like it, but hearing shoes tapping for 10 mintues when they walk somewhere after a full day...i'm snoring in 60 seconds:) But, I seriously love the shows...I'll have to check netflix ! I'm still trying to convince my husband he WANTS to watch Robin Hood with me;)
