Meg Clayton (megwaiteclayton) I'm not usually a big fan of contests, but this one charges no fee, and the grand prize is a publishing contract with Penguin. Details and links to more HERE

hmm ... looks interesting. when it says it has to be fictional does that include fantasy/sci-fi stuff too?

message 5: by Seth, The plan is simple--stay alive. (new)

Seth (ninjaaaaaofwritingbooks) | 2205 comments Mod
I think it proabably does, but don't hold that against me. And I have a comment. They are also holding another thing w/ a similar name where you can get your nano book in paperback for yourself!

message 8: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 5857 comments Mod
yeah i read over the rules and stuff ... and it doesn't say that it CAN'T be fantasy/sci-fi, so i assume it's okay. haha.

message 9: by Veronica, What the neck!? (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) | 2889 comments Mod
Well, fantasy/sci-fi IS fiction...

message 10: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 5857 comments Mod
i guess it depends on who you ask. some ppl just use 'fiction' as a term for realistic fiction ...

message 11: by Veronica, What the neck!? (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) | 2889 comments Mod
Well then they go against the rules of math and specific definitions!!!

message 12: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 5857 comments Mod
XD haha

message 13: by Meg (new)

Meg Clayton (megwaiteclayton) I'm sure fantasy and sci fi fall qualify. Just going to point out that sci fi is short for...

message 14: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 5857 comments Mod
science FICTION. haha

message 15: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 14 comments I entered my husband in it last year. Fantasy/sci-fi is allowed and in fact there is even a category for it.

adi (restartaugust) | 125 comments darn, i won't be able to get there in time, i don't think. i have a story me and friend wrote that's over 60,000 words, and we've spent about a year and a half on it... so yeah.
i won't be able to do it.

message 17: by Veronica, What the neck!? (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) | 2889 comments Mod
I would have to talk to my parents about it. and then I would have to write and edit something. I mean, I could do my nano story, bbut it is nowhere near finished and a large bit of it is nonsense.

message 18: by Sella, ov vey! i haven't checked this group in months. >< (new)

Sella Malin | 4530 comments Mod
Oh wow!! This is really cool!! I want to do it!! I'll just have to finish my nano novel and edit it before February...

message 19: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 5857 comments Mod
hmmm ... i think after my nano story, i'm gonna have to do a lot of editing. i guess if i enter, i'll just enter whatever i happen to edit first. i'm thinking Soul Stealer, but graaaaaaar i'm gonna need so much help w/it. XD

message 20: by Veronica, What the neck!? (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) | 2889 comments Mod
You cannot enter soul stealer, Brigid. Putting it on this site was publishing it online. And they want first publishing rights.

message 21: by Brigid ✩ (last edited Nov 27, 2008 08:15PM) (new)

Brigid ✩ | 5857 comments Mod
i took it off though ... plus i'm gonna, like, totally rewrite it.

message 22: by Sella, ov vey! i haven't checked this group in months. >< (new)

Sella Malin | 4530 comments Mod
yeah, that's the same with all the things i have now posted online- these are just the first draft, they're going to be WAY re-written.

message 23: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 5857 comments Mod
exactly. plus, goodreads doesn't own any rights to the writing on the site.

message 24: by Christy (new)

Christy Walker Thank you Meg for the information. I am working on the sequel to my first book and since it was self published, it looks like I may be eligible to enter. Thanks again for the information.
Christy

HAHAHA

message 27: by Veronica, What the neck!? (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) | 2889 comments Mod
Yes, but it is a public site and anybody can read it. Just becuase goodreads doesn't have the rights doesn't mean that YOU don't have the rights, and once you have used them, you can't really give them to somebody else. Well, not first publishing rights anyhow.

message 28: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 5857 comments Mod
Well it's not like a gazillion ppl are reading it. Besides, I only post unedited stuff. And it's not like publishers would KNOW, anyhow.

message 29: by Sella, ov vey! i haven't checked this group in months. >< (new)

Sella Malin | 4530 comments Mod
It's not considering publishing if it's just posted on a website!! It's like if I decided to post some writing on my facebook account, that doesn't mean I'm publishing it!! And I don't have any entire novels on this site, just long excerpts; and when I finish, I delete it...

Plus, the publishers won't know...and there are probably plenty of publishers out there who, even if they did know, won't care.

message 30: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 5857 comments Mod
yeah ... it's not technically giving away the rights to your writing, since the website doesn't own rights to it. as long as you haven't used the rights to your writing, i don't see why the publisher would care.

message 31: by Veronica, What the neck!? (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) | 2889 comments Mod
It doesn't matter how many people actually read it, it's the fact that anybody can read it.

And sella, if you posted it on facebook, no, it would not be publishing, because you can control who sees it. Same with blogspot, as long as it was not a public post.

message 32: by Sella, ov vey! i haven't checked this group in months. >< (new)

Sella Malin | 4530 comments Mod
I didn't actually post anything on facebook, I was just giving you an example that putting it on the internet doesn't mean publishing it. And if putting it on facebook or blogspot doesn't count, then neither should goodreads. There's really no difference; just that my facebook profile is private, and my goodreads profile is public. But I could easily make my profile private.

And I don't think it counts because I'm not putting the whole novel up, just long excerpts, and once I finish the novel I delete the story from goodreads.

message 33: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 5857 comments Mod
whatever. this is going around in circles.
i don't think it counts. i think i still have the rights to my story, and i can do what i want with it. the end.

Brigid, you can do all the editing in the world and still feel like there's more to be done. At some point, you're going to have to let go of some stories.
