hmm ... looks interesting. when it says it has to be fictional does that include fantasy/sci-fi stuff too?
I think it proabably does, but don't hold that against me. And I have a comment. They are also holding another thing w/ a similar name where you can get your nano book in paperback for yourself!
yeah i read over the rules and stuff ... and it doesn't say that it CAN'T be fantasy/sci-fi, so i assume it's okay. haha.
i guess it depends on who you ask. some ppl just use 'fiction' as a term for realistic fiction ...

i won't be able to do it.
I would have to talk to my parents about it. and then I would have to write and edit something. I mean, I could do my nano story, bbut it is nowhere near finished and a large bit of it is nonsense.
Oh wow!! This is really cool!! I want to do it!! I'll just have to finish my nano novel and edit it before February...
hmmm ... i think after my nano story, i'm gonna have to do a lot of editing. i guess if i enter, i'll just enter whatever i happen to edit first. i'm thinking Soul Stealer, but graaaaaaar i'm gonna need so much help w/it. XD
You cannot enter soul stealer, Brigid. Putting it on this site was publishing it online. And they want first publishing rights.
yeah, that's the same with all the things i have now posted online- these are just the first draft, they're going to be WAY re-written.

Christy
Yes, but it is a public site and anybody can read it. Just becuase goodreads doesn't have the rights doesn't mean that YOU don't have the rights, and once you have used them, you can't really give them to somebody else. Well, not first publishing rights anyhow.
Well it's not like a gazillion ppl are reading it. Besides, I only post unedited stuff. And it's not like publishers would KNOW, anyhow.
It's not considering publishing if it's just posted on a website!! It's like if I decided to post some writing on my facebook account, that doesn't mean I'm publishing it!! And I don't have any entire novels on this site, just long excerpts; and when I finish, I delete it...
Plus, the publishers won't know...and there are probably plenty of publishers out there who, even if they did know, won't care.

yeah ... it's not technically giving away the rights to your writing, since the website doesn't own rights to it. as long as you haven't used the rights to your writing, i don't see why the publisher would care.
It doesn't matter how many people actually read it, it's the fact that anybody can read it.
And sella, if you posted it on facebook, no, it would not be publishing, because you can control who sees it. Same with blogspot, as long as it was not a public post.

I didn't actually post anything on facebook, I was just giving you an example that putting it on the internet doesn't mean publishing it. And if putting it on facebook or blogspot doesn't count, then neither should goodreads. There's really no difference; just that my facebook profile is private, and my goodreads profile is public. But I could easily make my profile private.
And I don't think it counts because I'm not putting the whole novel up, just long excerpts, and once I finish the novel I delete the story from goodreads.

whatever. this is going around in circles.
i don't think it counts. i think i still have the rights to my story, and i can do what i want with it. the end.

Well, I'm not doing it, because I haven't even finished my nano novel yet, let alone start to edit it.
Brigid, you can do all the editing in the world and still feel like there's more to be done. At some point, you're going to have to let go of some stories.
