I think the show has some really great actors and great scenery. The downsides for me is that it is very much an "HBO" show, meaning that there seems to be more sex, nudity, and violence than really necessary. It's not bad, but it just doesn't always seem to belong. It feels like they throw it in there because they are HBO.
I think the books are better in the actual storytelling. I thought the show got confusing at times, and the show revealed things too fast when the book more subtly developed the plotline.
I haven't read the books at all, but I LOVE the show! I keep meaning to read the books, and now that I know that each book will be a season, I'll at least read the first book. I like to be surprised by the show, so I'd rather not read the 2nd book and know ahead what's going to happen in the show...for some reason I'd rather know ahead what's going to happen in the book. :)

I read the first book years ago and have seen the series. I like the both; it has to be one of the best adaptations I've seen in a while and I've enjoyed the nice things that they've added or changed. Of course there's more detail in the novels (like family backgrounds and the like) but the story has been intact in the transition to the television format. I'm looking forward to how they've managed to handle the second novel this season!

I think the show has some real..."
I completely agree with your take on HBO. I understand the point of the channel is to push boundaries a bit, but you can tell a story without turning it in to soft porn.

Yes he is but I don't think the next book will take 5 years. He is getting up in years. :)

I LOVED the books. devoured one right after the other!
The series is a bit different, but still very well done. I appreciate they've stuck pretty close to the story, and I love seeing the characters come to life.
Season 2 starts soon? I wasn't sure when, but I'll be booking some TV time. grin

Okay so here is my question. I feel like Viola. I like the series but I don't. I hate the token sex scene in each episode. Is the book full of that much detail in those situations? When I watch it I can FF through those scenes but reading it is different.

I agree. Everyone says well they have to make changes for TV. I understand skimming certain topics due to time constraints. However, people have been retelling Romeo and Juliet for hundreds of years and they stick pretty closely to the script every time.

I'm not surprised by that.
