Jennifer | 229 comments Has anyone read the book and seen the HBO series? Did you like the TV series or did they veer far from the book?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I have read the books and seen the series and I love both of them. You can't comp[are them because there are going to be differences. I can't wait until April. The second season comes out.

Jenny (narcisse) | 209 comments I've read and watched it. The show does a pretty good job of staying accurate to the book and the cast is pretty much amazing. I'm very excited to see what they do on screen with A Clash Of Kings.

Jennifer | 229 comments Is each season going to be a book?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I hope so, So far, the first and second book is going to be one season.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) I really enjoyed watching A Game of Thrones on HBO. I read the book first, and what appeared on the screen was really close to what I visualized as I was reading. Fine adaptation. Looking forward to A Clash of Kings.

message 7: by Viola (new)

Viola | 1014 comments I read the first three books in the series, and I watched the first season of the TV show. I enjoyed both the books and the TV show. They are good in their own ways.

I think the show has some really great actors and great scenery. The downsides for me is that it is very much an "HBO" show, meaning that there seems to be more sex, nudity, and violence than really necessary. It's not bad, but it just doesn't always seem to belong. It feels like they throw it in there because they are HBO.

I think the books are better in the actual storytelling. I thought the show got confusing at times, and the show revealed things too fast when the book more subtly developed the plotline.

I haven't read the books at all, but I LOVE the show! I keep meaning to read the books, and now that I know that each book will be a season, I'll at least read the first book. I like to be surprised by the show, so I'd rather not read the 2nd book and know ahead what's going to happen in the show...for some reason I'd rather know ahead what's going to happen in the book. :)

I read the first book years ago and have seen the series. I like the both; it has to be one of the best adaptations I've seen in a while and I've enjoyed the nice things that they've added or changed. Of course there's more detail in the novels (like family backgrounds and the like) but the story has been intact in the transition to the television format. I'm looking forward to how they've managed to handle the second novel this season!

message 10: by Dee (new)

Dee | 90 comments My biggest concern is that HBO will have filmed all the current books before the next in the series is finished! Martin is notorious for keeping his fans waiting.

I completely agree with your take on HBO. I understand the point of the channel is to push boundaries a bit, but you can tell a story without turning it in to soft porn.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) Dee wrote: "My biggest concern is that HBO will have filmed all the current books before the next in the series is finished! Martin is notorious for keeping his fans waiting."

Yes he is but I don't think the next book will take 5 years. He is getting up in years. :)

message 13: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (narcisse) | 209 comments I'm pretty sure they've said that A Storm of Swords (Book 3) is going to have to be split into two seasons. Which it should. That one is pretty long. After that, it will get kinda complicated. Large sections of books 4 and 5 take place simultaneously. The show may have to deviate from the books a bit after Storm of Swords.

message 14: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) I just hope I can get A Clash of Kings from the library and read it before the next season begins. It took three months to get the first book because so many people had it on hold. I like to read the book before seeing the screen version.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) It starts April 1st

message 16: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) Thanks for that, Jayme. Now I know I have a couple of months to get it from the library and read it.

Thea Atkinson (theaatkinson) Jennifer wrote: "Has anyone read the book and seen the HBO series? Did you like the TV series or did they veer far from the book?"

I LOVED the books. devoured one right after the other!

The series is a bit different, but still very well done. I appreciate they've stuck pretty close to the story, and I love seeing the characters come to life.

Season 2 starts soon? I wasn't sure when, but I'll be booking some TV time. grin

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) Season 2 starts April 1st, at least that is what they advertised. :)

message 19: by Thea (new)

Thea Atkinson (theaatkinson) how exciting. Thanks Jayme. Will mark it on my e calendar so i don't miss it

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I know periodically they are airing the first season on HBO now to refresh our memories. :)

message 21: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) I'm DVRing them and will probably watch the first season again before watching the next. I don't mind reruns if they're good.

Okay so here is my question. I feel like Viola. I like the series but I don't. I hate the token sex scene in each episode. Is the book full of that much detail in those situations? When I watch it I can FF through those scenes but reading it is different.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) The book doesn't have the long and drawn out sex scenes. That is all HBO.

message 24: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments That's primetime television at work. All the latest movie stations have the token sex scene per episode because it's "racy!" Bleh. I do the same thing, Tera, FF!

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I just ignore it. It's my fourth run through of season 1.

message 26: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) I enjoyed the first book and season one. Thought I would watch season one again before the new season starts, but I couldn't get interested a second time. I am looking forward to the second season, though, having recently finished reading A Clash of Kings. I didn't enjoy the second book as much as the first, but I'm hoping the series will be better.

message 27: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 291 comments I started watching Games of Throne Season 1 on HBO Demand. I love it so far. So now I am reading the book. I know its crazy reading the book and watching the series at the same time. But I can't help it. LOL

message 28: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 229 comments Its funny to come upon this thread and find out I started it. Update, I've read 4 out of the 5 books, and am really not liking this season of the show. Funny how things change, lol. Martin has written so much material and for there to be so many changes bugs me.

Irene (irene918) | 1016 comments I've been reading the books and watching the show. There are many details missing from the show and I don't understand how people can really understand the show without the information that are in the novels.

I agree. Everyone says well they have to make changes for TV. I understand skimming certain topics due to time constraints. However, people have been retelling Romeo and Juliet for hundreds of years and they stick pretty closely to the script every time.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) Some people just watch the show and don't read the books. I have watched the show and read all the books that are currently out. I just treat them as separate entities and enjoy both. I haven't seen the 4th season yet. I hear they made alot of changes.

message 32: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene918) | 1016 comments I still enjoy both anyway.

Kat (A Journey In Reading) (ajourneyinreading) | 390 comments I am just starting this series. I have the first one in my lap as we speak. It was a choice between GofT and Outlander.....Thrones won! And no I havent watched the series either.

message 34: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene918) | 1016 comments The relationship between Arya and the hound is different from the TV show and the novel.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I think it is better if you read the books before you watch the series.

message 36: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene918) | 1016 comments I skip around reading the chapters of the characters I'm interested in.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) Doesn't that make it confusing for the plot?

message 38: by Janice (new)

Janice Sitts Irene wrote: "The relationship between Arya and the hound is different from the TV show and the novel."

I'm not surprised by that.

message 39: by Janice (new)

Janice Sitts I have only seen HBO series and enjoy it immensely - I was lent the series to read and found I couldn't devote the time it deserved so for now, I'm very happy with the TV series - our library had all seasons on DVD so I did a long weekend marathon...love the show and the various plots and characters...some day I'll read.

message 40: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene918) | 1016 comments Let's read the novel until the next season begins. We have 10 months to read it.

Kat (A Journey In Reading) (ajourneyinreading) | 390 comments I just finished the first book this afternoon. LOVED it! Luckily, I have the second one, in my lap at this moment, so I can immediately start it! I feel a bookstore visit in my future this week for the rest of them.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I suggest getting the A Dance of Dragons on ebook. It is a big book.
