Classics for Beginners discussion

We'd like to start reading A Tale of Two Cities in February if anyone would like to join us .

I was just about to set this up when I saw you already did. Do you have the book? If so, what edition? I have a very old copy, but will try to get the same edition as you.

I was going to start reading it on February 6. Would it be better to start reading at the beginning of the month? Please let me know what works for everyone.

Both dates work for me, I'll leave it up to you and Melissa to decide which is best.

I have this on my Kindle and I've actually started it a couple of months ago, but I've got stuck :( Maybe I'll get some motivation to get back to it. I'm a non-native English speaker, and Dickens feels just so hard to follow!

Many native-born English speaking people find Dickens hard to follow. I hope we can help you get through it. I read this book more than 30 years ago. It is one of the few Dickens' books I have enjoyed and have wanted to re-read.

It'll be my first time and I'm looking forward to it, the only other Dickens I've read was Great Expectations and I enjoyed that.

I also loved Bleak House and there is a wonderful miniseries available. Hang in there Mady, I find Dickens difficult to follow sometimes also. You are not alone there! :)

I'm going to vote to start it at the beginning of the month now. I thought I'd still be reading another book until then but I finished it earlier than I thought I would. I'm putting off starting anything new that's too involved so I can give my attention to Tale of Two Cities when we start it.

I got to finish two books this upcoming week. However, everyone can start reading A Tale anytime. Do you want to have a general discussion or split the discussion into "non-spoiler" sections? For instance, we can discuss Book the One which is the first six chapters on one non-spoiler link and continue to divide the book up in separate sections. That way, each of us can participate at her own rate. I've seen it done both ways. However, I have never done a buddy read with just a few people. I'll do whatever method will be the best for all of us.

I like the idea of dividing the book up in sections and links, I've never participated in one of these either and doing it that way makes a lot of sense to me. I'm not sure how to set up non-spoiler link sections, so if you can do it Emily, that would be great!

I've seen it done on other sites, but I am not sure how to do it. I'll ask around. I actually like having non-spoiler links when reading a long book.

I finished reading this last weekend for another GR group. Will be interesting to see what people here think of it.

In other groups, we do not have separate threads for spoiler/non-spoiler, but people are encouraged to use the "spoiler" html so as not to ruin anything for those who haven't yet finished.

How do you use "spoiler html"

If you click where it says "some html is okay" -- located above the comment box, it will show you how to do the "spoiler".

i have the bn classic mass market edition hope to read it as well.
