Erika | 4 comments Hi!
I just came across a conversation the other day about this and thought it was pretty interesting

For example, i consider a 350+ pages book a long book, but for many a 400 pages book is relatively short.

So, at what number of pages would you say a book is long? :)

Anything over 450-500 pages is long for me.

Charmaine (empress_charla) | 143 comments I agree with Heidi. 450 pages is kinda long for me, but manageable. Anything close to 500 is long. :-)

Emma (emnor) I don't really think of books as long or short based on the number of pages. There's a lot of different things I base it on.

For example, I consider Graceling (The Seven Kingdoms, #1) by Kristin Cashore to be a good sized book. Perfect. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5) by J.K. Rowling was a long book by page numbers, but I think I enjoyed it so much that I don't really consider it to be a 'long' book. Brisingr (Inheritance, #3) by Christopher Paolini and Inheritance (Inheritance, #4) by Christopher Paolini were both long, but I read them and enjoyed them.

And then there's books like Lord of the Flies by William Golding , which was surprisingly small. At least, that's what I thought when I first got it. And it was an okay read- not really my type, but interesting enough. But when I had to annotate it for English Class.... I basically said, "$#@&+@#$%&!!!!! HOW LONG IS THIS BOOK???"

I don't really tend to think of books as long until they're 400+ pages. That doesn't stop me from reading long books or anything... It just makes my brain go, "Looooong. x_x"

I also have that feeling when the chapters are that long. I usually like to stop reading when the chapter ends unless I'm too tired, and when i see the chapter go on and on forever, the book feels longer than it really is.

Victoria (closer2coma86) | 9 comments I generally love long books as long as they are well written and well paced. For me, Beautiful Creatures was the epitomy of a long book. It was so. damn. slow.

Outlander could have used an editor. I'm just sayin...

Agreed. I had to read it for another book club, and I was so bored for most of the book. If I had edited that book, it would..."

I listened to the audiobook! It was like 30 CD's and took me weeks of driving to finish. Between that one and Game of Thrones (which was 32 CD's) I am kind of over long audiobooks.

Erin O'Malley (aboutstraightpeople) Stephen King books like Under the dome and The Stand are pretty long for me, usually take me three weeks to read.

500 and pluss is a long book to me.
250\300 is a normal size book.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I like thicker books, as they promise me more. :) I think 300 pages is pretty average, and a long one is 500 pages and up.

Jaina | 13 comments I'm most comfortable with 300 - 450 pages. Anything bigger that 500 pages is a little intimidating before I start it, but it's a fun challenge.

I can only stand 500+ pages if the book is really good and it sucks me in its world

Yeah me too Bluemoon. I prefer under 400 pages or really around 300 pages is even better.

Ditto to everything you said! I think it often depends on how well a book is written, or how interesting it is, rather than how many pages it has. That said, as a relatively concrete measurement, I agree that over 400 pages is getting to be a lot to get through regardless of the content.

message 17: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments It really does depend on the book for me. Some 500+ pagers I can do in a day or two(Think later Potter books) and some that are only around 350 could take me a week.

If I HAD to give a number, though, I guess 400 is where it starts to look long. 600 is where I consider if I really want to read it or not haha.

message 18: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I think a lot of the time it depends on the story -- I ripped through Dreams of Gods and Monsters and it was 600+ pages, easily one of the longest YA books I've run across (HP notwithstanding). Another long series is the Ashfall books by Mike Mullin, but I think they're well worth it because of all the action and character development. Those three books are 476 pages, 580 pages and 534 pages each.

Otherwise, I tend to think of 400-500 pages as long.
