Kim | 1499 comments What books released or to be released this year are you looking forward to?

On top of my list is the penultimate Riftwar book, A Crown Imperiled, which I get next week thanks to being Australian :P

Also on my list is The Blinding Knife, The Daylight War (which may be pushed back to 2013 :( ) and hopefully a new Discworld book.

Otherwise I have no idea what else will be released this year.

message 2: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments Oh, well I just found The Long Earth is coming out this year so it goes on the list too.

message 6: by Trike (new)

Trike I mostly prefer SF over F, but I am definitely looking forward to The Daylight War, except it looks like it's been pushed back to February 2013. But the previous two books in that series are some of the best Fantasy I've read in a while. At some point I'll read the sequel to The Passage (The Twelve: A Novel), but I'm not sure it will be this year.

Chris wrote: "I'm looking forward to the following this year:

Armored by John Joseph Adams
Redshirts A Novel with Three Codas by John Scalzi"

Those both look cool. I'm a fan of Scalzi and I like what he did with the Fuzzies, so I'm on-board for his take on thinly-disguised Star Trek. And Armored could be good. I'm always up for some fun short stories.

Following the links to Amazon, I noticed that Man-Kzin Wars XIII is coming out May 1st. Some of the Man-Kzin books have been rather dodgy, but overall I like the series.

Caliban's War (Expanse, #2) by James S.A. Corey I enjoyed Leviathan Wakes enough that I want to see what happens next. June 26th.

message 7: by Trike (new)

Trike It looks like the 7th "Destroyermen" novel called Iron Gray Sea will come out on July 3rd. I really did not like the 6th book much at all, but the previous 5 were a lot of fun, so I'll be getting this one.

message 8: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments Ah, forgot about Caliban's War, thanks for the reminder.

message 9: by Trike (new)

Trike Looking through Tor's upcoming releases, I see that David Brin has a new book coming soon.

One that looks quite interesting to me, though, is Energized by Edward Lerner. He's been writing those "Ringworld prequels" that are well-written but utterly pointless in the same way the Star Wars movies were. However, he does seem to be a good writer, so I'll give this one a go.

message 10: by Manatees (new)

Manatees | 26 comments I always go here to see upcoming book releases
Upcoming4.me Upcoming Science Fiction and Fantasy releases

This year I want to get all the Mariner re-issues of Philip K Dick.

As for the new one, I'm definitely up for The Mongoliad by Neal Stephenson and Greg Bear.

I've read it in serialized form and it's brilliant.

message 11: by Evilynn (new)

Evilynn | 331 comments Railsea - China Miéville
The Drowned Cities - Paolo Bacigalupi (if I manage to read Ship Breaker #1 first, that is ;))
Range of Ghosts - Elizabeth Bear
The Long Earth - Terry Pratchett
Zero Point - Neal Asher
+ the second book of Fairyland by Cat Valente, of course.

I'll very likely read the new Sookie Stackhouse novel and since I'll devote a chunk of the year to re-reading WOT, I'm sure I'll pick up A Memory of Light at some point too (provided it's actually released come autumn).

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 540 comments The Master of Heathcrest Hall

I just found that this is coming out in a couple months ... it's the end of a trilogy I've been following, so, no reason not to.

Oh, and also the anthology Wilful Impropriety, from Ekaterina Sedia. It has an excellent lineup of contributors.

message 13: by Pauline (new)

Pauline | 12 comments Crucible Of Gold
Blackout

Only those 2 so far for series that I actively keep up (and am completely caught up) with. I know of some books that are coming out later this year for series that I've only read the 1st in the lineup or for ones that I plan to start and haven't gotten around to yet.

So much to read, so little time...

message 14: by Kevin (new)

Kevin I'm looking forward to continuing these series:

When We Were Executioners
Boneyards
The Twelve: A Novel

message 15: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) Has C.J. Cherryh's Intruder been listed yet? It's coming out in March - the latest in her Foreigner series.

I was interested in this until I heard Paul Kearney had been dropped and the book is now being written by someone called Mark Morris. No idea why this happened.

message 17: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 889 comments Well, that kinda sucks about Kearney.

message 21: by Eric (new)

Eric Sturdevant Very much looking forward to Hide Me Among the Graves: A Novel by Tim Powers which is coming out March 13. It takes place in the same world as The Stress of Her Regard about 50 years after the events of that book. Though according to the author you won't have to have read Stress to read the new one.

This series is powerful and intimidating.

Hooray!

message 31: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments I'm only looking forward to Railsea, but something else will probably blow everyone's mind that I know, and then it will also be something to look forward to. Keep me posted, Kim. You are always a good indication of what I should read.

message 32: by Anne (new)

Anne Lyle I'm looking forward to Sworn in Steel by Douglas Hulick - I read Among Thieves before Christmas and loved it.

message 33: by Ric (last edited Mar 17, 2012 07:48AM) (new)

Ric (ricaustria) | 17 comments Nice list - found some possibles to check on. I hope Goodreads folks keep adding. My list is short, so far:
China Miéville - Railsea
Alastair Reynolds - Blue Remembered Earth
Is there one from Peter F. Hamilton?

message 34: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments Yes but I'm looking for quality not quantity. There's a lot on that site but I want to know if it'll be good.

Who else can determine that besides you?

Here are ones I'm interested in, either because I've read books by these authors or they look good.

Tricked (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #4) by Kevin Hearne Triggers by Robert J. Sawyer After the Fall, Before the Fall, During the Fall A Novel by Nancy Kress Red Glove (Curse Workers #2) by Holly Black The Calling (Darkness Rising, #2) by Kelley Armstrong . message 42: by Joon (new)

Joon (everythingbeeps) | 512 comments Every year I really look forward to a new Jack McDevitt book, and he's got at least one coming this year, so that'll be good.

Beyond that, there's a ton of stuff I'm looking forward to, most of which I won't even end up reading this year, but one particular "drop everything" book is Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas by John Scalzi.

message 43: by Michael (new)

message 47: by Brett (new)

Brett (battlinjack) | 148 comments Too many to list, but I do want to mention a fairly new publisher that has put out some fantastic novels and looks to be publishing a lot more.
Angry Robot Books ( http://angryrobotbooks.com/ )

They publish a variety of genre and seem to have many authors I haven't heard of to date, but are VERY talented.

I enjoy all my favorite authors but I REALLY like to support the new authors as much as I can.

message 48: by Al (new)

Al Philipson (printersdevil) | 94 comments Stranded Angels by Ralph Joseph-MIriani Stranded Angels by Ralph Joseph-Mirani. A delightful twist on an Arabian Nights story:

Ali has a going trading business with three mules to carry his goods. Okay, it’s not making him rich, but he gets along. He’s also got a good wife, a child, and a beautiful slave girl who actually gets along with his wife. Life should be good.

But there are also the thieves who raid the countryside (and trading caravans) and kill anyone who tries to resist.

Oh — and some visitors from space who have a secret cave in the mountains full of strange items … and diamonds, and a problem they want Ali to solve.
Life can be so complicated, but the reward may be tremendous — if Ali can survive.

I read this when it first came out last week and loved it.
