So what was your first PNR? Did it make you an addict, or did you have to try a few more to get your PNR-loving badge?

message 2: by Tiffanie (new)

Tiffanie My first PNR was Dark Hunter Series. Then I moved onto Black Dagger Brother Hood. Been hook on any and all PNR since.

What a happy coincidence. Night Pleasures was my first official paranormal. I was stone cold hooked after reading it.

I've seen a few folks say they started PNR with Twilight but then say they don't like it as much now. I actually read Twilight as a seasoned PNR reader, and I still love Twilight. It's a different kind of read, but it's in my heart.

Yes, indeed.

Dark Lover was probably one of the first several I read.

Liz Barrons-Kattalakis-Quiakides-Tehrror | 48 comments I stared with Twilight, then Dark-Hinters,The League, Sookie Stackhouse, BDB...etc. Now I'm addicted to PNR!!!!

message 12: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) My first official PNR was Morrigan's Cross (Circle Trilogy, #1) by Nora Roberts by Nora Roberts but I didn't realize that it was paranormal until I joined Goodreads and had already read what I consider to be my first actual PNR Scent of Darkness (Darkness Chosen, #1) by Christina Dodd .

message 13: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 51 comments A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, #2) by Kresley Cole I had actually tried a few other PNR, but just couldn't get it to them. I read Cole's other books, which were HR, and thought I'd try this. Man-oh-man! I was hooked from the first page. Couldn't put it down. Thank goodness it was my week-end off, LOL!

Keri (keri_45) | 36 comments My first foray into Urban Fantasy Romance I would have to say was Linda Lael Miller's Vampire Quad back in the 90s. It was never a first genre for me and I was brought back kicking and screaming into the genre with Brigg's Mercy Thompson series. I love Briggs, Cole, Harrison, Singh and Feehan.

When I first started reading BDB, I could not stand it! The hip hop lingo threw me off to the point of not returning to this series for about a year. After several good reviews from other friends and a bit of coaxing, I jumped back in...lol. Now, I'm hooked and can not wait for the next release. This series has taught me to keep an opened mind to an authors range of creativity.

message 17: by Alexa (new)

Alexa | 62 comments If someone asked me 5 years ago about ParaNormal Romance, I would have probably given them a blank look and a blink.
Until one warm afternoon that I was wandering about in a book fair next to the seaport, checking translated and non-translated literature and novels. I came across one particular pavilion decorated from top to bottom with colorful fantasy art posters that shouted from miles away the genre of the books that little bookstore sold. Now, a scene like that is not at all frequent where I live. - By the way, I live in Greece, so it's more accustomed to feed ourselves with Plato and Aristotle in plain-looking books, than open-up and experiment further to new genres of literature, say BDSM romance. (LOL... Yeah, that kind of books nobody finds in a bookstore around here...)

So I check the books, find all the great fantasy classics, but I was not convinced. I'd read some of them before, after all. But then, the goth-looking salesguy who was closely watching me scan and pass by novels with elves, dragons, dwarves and demons, suggested to me a read of vampires. Not the Twilight ones, not the Sookie ones. It was Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead that got me hooked for good in pnr. Now, anyone who knows me well, knows I have no love lost for YA, and I find them hard to appreciate, but this series was just a revelation for me. As if my inner compass finally turned me to the right direction. But then, after finishing it I had to wait for the next one. The agony was making me impatient. What to read next? (For the record, I had not joined GR by then). So I researched, and researched, and tried to fill up my time with a new series that I read good reviews about, called the Black Dagger Brotherhood, book Lover Enshrined Lover Enshrined (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #6) by J.R. Ward . Yeap, straight to the deep to novel no#6 of the series. I might not have understood everything while reading this book, (it started in media res of the general plot of the series, after all) but I was sure about one thing. These Brothers with the very graphic names were giving my blood pressure a rollercoaster ride. Well, the rest was history. Next on my list came Kresley Cole with the The Warlord Wants Forever The Warlord Wants Forever (Immortals After Dark, #1) by Kresley Cole (yeah, I learned my lesson not to start a series from the middle!), and I was officially a PNR junkie. ;)

Jessica Wimberly (lovehina154) | 10 comments The book that got me started was "Dark Secret" by Christine Feehan.

message 21: by Gaynell (new)

Gaynell (gaynellk) | 8 comments My first was the Twilight series - which I still love (not so much the movies though). Then, I read A Hunger Like No Other - which I read straight through two times (and still love Lachlain MacRieve). Safe to say I was hooked. Read all the rest of the IAD series that were in print at the time, then the Demonica series, next I think I read the Highlander series by Moning. Now I have over 100 books here to read. All of them aren't parnormal though. I take turns between reading paranormal, urban fantasy, contemporary romances, historical romances, and fantasy - with a little sci-fi and mystery thrown in for good measure.

message 22: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisae1962) | 3 comments My daughter recommended Laurell K. Hamilton's Merry Gentry series to me. I read it, liked it, made jokes with her over the excesses in it, but that didn't really get me hooked. The one that got me hooked was Pamela Palmer's Rapture Untamed. Probably because that one was truly a romance. The Merry Gentry series I would consider to be a sexual fantasy rather than a paranormal romance.
Rapture Untamed (Feral Warriors, #4) by Pamela Palmer

message 23: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 14 comments The first paranormal romance I got into was the Destiny of Matrix series by Dara Joy. They were paperbacks on sale for a couple of dollars each at Walmart and I figured what the heck. Now that I know such a catagory of book exists I can't get enough. Next was Jennifer Ashley The Bad, Mad Duke. Currently I am devouring everything Kresley Cole, Laurann Dohner, Alexis Morgan, Susan Grant and JR Ward.

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 309 comments I love those Dara Joy books Melissa, I read the first couple quite recently and they made me giggle!

I think the first PNR I read was: Dragonswan (Dark-Hunter, #0.2; Were-Hunter, #1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon , but I had read some UFs before that, mainly the Kate Daniel's series by Ilona Andrews and the Cassie Palmer series by Karen Chance.

Melodie (melodiestar) | 9 comments I started out reading contemporary and historical romances and was finding it a bit lacking to my taste. One day, I stumbled upon Fantasy Lover and felt in love with the book and genre. I still read some contemporary and historical but I keep coming back to this genre.

Melissa | 14 comments I can't even begin to tell you how nice it is to meet other people that are interested in the same kind of books that I am. Most of my family/friends instantly turn there nose up when they hear I am reading anything in the romance genre. One of my favorite scenes in the Night of Trillion Starts by Dara Joy is when the hero attacks the toaster and his horror regarding his hair after he uses a blow dryer for the first time.

When Funmi Met Romance (whenfunmimetromance) | 50 comments I was bored at like 1 AM. I went to amazon and saw that everyone read this book, also, i particularly liked the cover for some odd reason. I gave it a try, and it was a fast hard addiction from there on. I was obsessed A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, #2) by Kresley Cole

Melissa, I meet very few readers in life. And most of the ones I meet are snobby about the kinds of books I read. I had a friend who borrowed some of my trashy romance novels because she was in the mood for them. Her attitude was kind of insulting, but I went ahead and let her borrow them.

My sister and mother both read romance, so there is a buffer around me. But I am so glad I have my online friends to talk books with.

Desiree M ~*~*~ LiveReadCollect (livereadcollect) | 6 comments Hmm, I don't know if this counts as Paranormal Romance but it had some PNR aspects to it and that was Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause . This is really the first one that I remember reading that had a romance or romances that were more prominent.

However if that doesn't count as a PNR, my other first or two firsts were Dark Legend (Carpathians, #8) by Christine Feehan and Dance with the Devil (Dark-Hunter, #3) by Sherrilyn Kenyon . Borrowed them from the library and I've been in love with PNR since.

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 309 comments @ Melissa, OMG I remember the scene, that was hilarious! Thinking about them is making me crave a reread! Oh, and when she makes that "clay" pot LMFAO!!!!

What an awesome first book to start on Tai, I confess I also love the HLNO cover as well, it is so corny, but I just love it!

I am glad I have GR as well, I hate it when people look down on you or degrade your intelligence just because of the genre of book you read!

message 33: by Missyb (new)

Missyb | 42 comments the first book was The Accidental Vampire by Lynsay Sands, then I started at the beginning of the series and finished it, then went on to Sparks How To Marry A Millionaire Vampire, then the Dark Hunter series by Kenyon. I had not read a book since HS (it had been over 10 years) other then JFK. I read the newspaper daily but that was it. Now I don't go anywhere without a book (or my Nook), and that was almost 9 years ago when I started the Argeneau series.

The laughter was the biggest reason why I read The Accidental Vampire and the rest of the Argeneau series, which started me reading book non-stop.

Melissa | 14 comments Hasn't an e-book transformed your reading experience! I go no where without my Kindle. If the Text to speech feature is enabled I even let the computer voice read the book to me on my commute to and from work. Another great feature about a kindle or nook is no one can see what you are reading. I work with all men in the Engineering department and for all they know I am reading books on cooking and laundry care. LOL- they are always asking why I smile so much while I am reading. Little do they know......

I felt the same way and it also took me about a year b/f I could give it another try. Glad I did.

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 309 comments I love having a Kindle as well! For very similar reasons, I can read what I like, no matter how dodgy the cover without anyone knowing lol, it is very illicit! I also like that you get the book staightaway! No waiting!

I think a good funny PNR are great finds, I don't like books that don't have a tiny bit of humour in it, no matter how dry or dark.

yeah i was lucky, but it also gave me high standards. KC is the best!

I concur, I love goodreads. In my advanced literature class I constantly hear people grate on romance. They have no idea how much work goes into crafting a good romance book, not to mention the horrid contracts that force authors to spit out books like a machine! Historical romance is the reason i passed my european history class. Goodreads is the only place i have where people respect and acknowledge romance books!

Melissa | 14 comments I agree! A book with humorous parts or references always makes the top of my list. It is a huge factor in why I adore stories by Kresley Cole. I also love how quickly you can get a book. I no longer have to camp out at the book store waiting for a new release by my favorite author and they can't sell out before I get my hands on it.

Melissa | 14 comments I think it would be more challenging to craft a romance than to write other types of books. Not only must you devise a awesome backstory you have to write wicked hot love scenes. I am on the fence about forcing the author to spit out books like a machine. So often stories in a series are so great I am dying to get my hands on the next edition. I don't want the pressure to cause an author to cut corners and release something sub par but I don't want to wait two years for the next installment if it can be helped. Do you know what I mean?

I agree Lady Danielle. I'd much rather wait for a good book than to have a bad book in a series because the author was pushed to rush it. When it's bad enough, it can completely turn me off from a series.

I usually read around anyway, so the wait for the good new book isn't as painful.

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 309 comments The humour is also a another great reason why I love IAD so much, it wouldn't be the same without it!

In my brain I agree that I would rather they spent a decent amount of time making sure the book was as great as possible and not rushed and sloppy. But when I have finished the book, all I want is the next one and start complaining to myself why the authors can't write faster lol

yeah the humor is crazy! i find myself wanting to constantly talk to my friends or boyfriend about what is being said..but then i have to explain the book, and the fact that the protagonists arn't human, then defend the genre, and the book...by that point the joke isn't even funny anymore :/ lol

message 47: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 14 comments There were many times that I just started laughing out loud while reading the IAD series. It has garnered me some funny looks. My favorite characters are the Valkyrie. LOL, you are right. The joke is not funny after you try and explain it because you are too busy trying to defend that it is a paranormal romance. People just don't know what they are missing although I have tried several times to explain the appeal.

message 48: by Tonia (new)

Tonia | 3 comments I started out with the Twilight series. That opened the door for me. I had never read anything PNR related nor did I have the desire to until I read Twilight. Then I moved on to the Sookie and BDB series. After that I was an official addict and could not bear to go back reading just plain 'ole romance. It just seems so boring now! :-D

Suzanne (Under the Covers Book blog) | 309 comments I try and mark all my favourite bits, by updating on here or noting the page so I can put it in a review or something, that way I know I can chat about it to people on GR, who appreciate the humour! I love that way they talk to eachother in the books, so crazy, yet hilarious! The only person I think who is really funnier is Shelly Laurenston.

Not a massive fan of Twilight or Sookie, although I do love the earlier books and Trueblood, but BDB is my FAVE PNR series! IAD is ofcourse a close second!
