Lush Library discussion

What book? How did you hear about it? What made you want to buy/read it? Is there anything special about the edition you have? When do you plan to read it?

Blindness - I went off on a tangent of looking to see what books a Dystopian list contained on here and clicked on this book because it had an intriguing title and a high rating. I noticed it was on my to-read list so read some more about it and decided to buy a copy when I noticed a nice looking hard copy containing another book by the same author (Seeing). I looked up the author José Saramago and looked at different editions bearing in mind that I may want to buy more of his books in the future. It arrived this morning and it's a nice looking book. I plan to read it after

it is this edition - anyone read any of his books?

I've never heard of that author but Blindness sounds really good, I'm really enjoying dystopian novels at the moment as well.
I most recently bought Anno Dracula by Kim Newman
I spotted a signed copy of it at Forbidden Planet for £5.99 and couldn't say no. I've wanted to read for a while, I'll read pretty much anything about vampires, and Kim is such an interesting character himself that it's bound to be good! As for when I'll read it, god knows, I've got an insurmountable stack of books!!

I recently bought and , , and from The Works online. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is hardback, £4.99, and the others were 3 for £5. I too have an insurmountable TBR pile, but I just couldn't resist at those prices :)

I'm getting slightly impatient with the library though, I'm not used to having to wait more than a couple of days for books.

My halo has slipped, they don't have in the library yet so I've ordered it for £4.99 from the Book People.

I think you did really well. I have a fine on my library account after I forgot to renew a book on-line just after having K. It's quite a walk and it sits at the top of quite a steep hill anyway. I just charity shop and try to buy on marketplace/ebay as cheaply as possible. I usually pass on the books too.



is a really beautiful hardback and even if the book turns out to be a nice light book that you only read once it will look lovely on the shelf x

I've been buying graphic novels like there's no tomorrow as I've seriously got the bug right now.
I've been interested in the medium for a while and have read some in the past, but I currently have a big stack of beautifully drawn goodies and no immediate interest in other books. let's see how long it lasts.
I bought (and finished) last monday, I also got and then for some theory and background info on the subject. but those are just the tip of my graphic iceberg at the moment. ;-)

does anybody think there would be interest enough in the group for a separate thread on graphic novels/comics/manga etc?

I've been thinking of seeking out some more graphics - seems like a perfect mix for me art + reading. I've been thinking of starting with I think that if any of his books were voted for they might be a popular change for a group read.

I have volumes 1 and 2 of the absolute sandman simply because I had heard and read so many good things about sandman and I love Neil Gaiman. I've read the first one but haven't gotten around to the second one yet, but so far I really liked it. it's quite dark and a bit scary in places.

I've bought three books from the charity shop next door to where I work over the last week. and I've just lent this one my Mum to read first. All £2.50 each and in clean condition. Love finding just what I was looking for un there :)

It was from The Book People. £3.99 and no postage costs this week. The cover I have is black, it looks gorgeous.

They quite often have new releases for around 4 pounds Ness, I think they're always worth a look :-)

I wish more hardbacks were as attractive as The Snow Child, I really don't like dust covers, they get so tatty. Hopefully The Snow Child may start off a trend.

I love dustcovers, but I always take them off the book when I'm reading it, so they don't get damaged.
I almost feel a bit cheated when I get a hardback book that doesn't have one.

I bought a load of books from the online sale on the oxfam website. I got:

- I've heard rave reviews of this book so decided to give it a go. I know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover but it looks so quirky and cute.

- I've only ever read one Joanne Harris book I haven't liked. This looks like a good summery read.

- another summery read.

- It's the Dickens plot in this book that attracted me to it.

- I read We Are All Made Of Glue last year and loved it. The author's style of writing is quirky and fun.

- This looks vaguely Dan Brownish.

- The bookcover isn't on there but it is the sequel to Chocolat which is a fab book.

- I noticed this one in the nominations for the Australian Book and it looked quite good.

- I noticed this one in the nominations for the asian book.

I also bought from tesco for £3. I don't usually buy books from there out of principle but I couldn't resist it because I seem to be the only one who hasn't read it.

Oh and from Oxfam for £2.49.

'Florence and Giles' has finally arrived at my library, 6 weeks after I ordered it! hurray!

I need to re-join the library. Must do that soon, I've not been in for years and I do miss it.

Just ordered this one from Amazon . Looks interesting and good reviews. Not sure when I'll actually get round to reading it, as also just received a big pile of books from Amazon and ebay of the ones I needed for my 12+3 challenge. All these books piled up in front of me, very excited :D

I've just ordered - I could have put it on my kindle for not much more than ordering the hardback (which was cheaper than the pb) but I opted for the hardback since Sophia made it sound like a keeper/book to lend out.

I ordered the paperback Kirsty - from Amazon. Paid £5.91 with free postage ... still more than I like to pay for a paperback really. Not started this one yet, but I've made a start on her first book Isabel and Rocco, I do like her writing style and she was only a teenager when she wrote this first one.

I bought for my kindle yesterday. It was recommended by a friend. I have always resisted as I saw the film a few years ago and was worried it was a traumatic book to read. But after speaking to my friend have decided to give it a go.

I read it when it first came out and recently watched the movie. I remember thinking that I don't remember the book being so raw. It could be because I now have kids whereas back then it made me think about my Mum and I (I think I'd moved away by then). I remember the book being sad but more subtle.

It's scary the number of books I've bought recently...(Damn Waterstones website! *Grin*) Just decided to treat myself (again) to Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind... Should be a good read, as the synopsis on Waterstones hooked me... Bit different to my usual read (vampires etc,) so I'll see how I get on with it...

Two #3 - what are they about?

I just got and in the FS sale and from amazon marketplace. and are for my 12 + 3 challenge but is the most beautiful.

Ascend is the final book in Amanda Hocking's Trylle trilogy. It's YA fantasy/romance stuff, but about Trolls, which makes a change. The reviews for it aren't great, and I've the second one to read yet, but I can't leave a series partially read.

An Ice Cold Grave is the third in Charlaine Harris' Harper Connelly quartet. It's a paranormal-mystery type series -- Harper can find dead people and see how they died. I'm pretty fond of Charlaine Harris, so I thought I'd give this series a try.


Those Folio Society editions look really gorgeous, Kirsty. Are they as lovely "in person" as they look in the photos? I could be tempted!

Gorgeous? Aww Sarah they are stunning, their photos don't do them justice. They just feel so sumptuous to read - the colours, the printed covers, the illustrations are such a treat, the feel of the thick paper and the perfect weight of them. If you ever decide to join mail me and we'll do the referral thing and split the vouchers:)

I've just pre-ordered the new George R R Martin Song of Ice and Fire box set, which is released later this month. I'm going to try and read Fevre Dream this month, so that should lead in nicely for me. If I don't get around to it, then I'll have it ready to tackle this summer, at least :)

The Song of Ice & Fire series is really good, and I can heartily recommend it. I've read all the books, and am now waiting for the next one in the series to be released! *Starts to dribble at the thought!*

I've just bought the first book in the series to see if I like it. I've also had a notification that is at the library so will read that first.

Damned Waterstones website is almost as bad as the Lush website - especially when it comes to temptation! I've succumbed yet again, and have ordered:

They're all paperbacks, and are all on pre-order, so am quietly biding my time until they arrive in the post. Then, once they're read, I had them over to the WNAA shop, who sell them to raise money to keep "Big Yellow" flying.

Bookcross? Never heard of this scheme.. I just drop them into the WNAA shop, and they sell them.

Just bought for next months group read. Making my way through The Hunger Games right now. Luckily (or not so much) I had a bit of a tummy bug and got through half the first book on Friday.

I have been really good and haven't bought any new books since Snow Child except (Which I had to because the library didn't have. I have however been a little bit naughty and bought myself some books from The Book People free delivery if you spend over £15 with the code JUBIL33

Having started today I then bought in tescos. They were doing 2 for £7 but typically didn't have the 3rd book there

I recently borrowed Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers off my mother but I've been wanting to read the book since 2009. I bought it for a friend then for her birthday and I was going to borrow it off her after but she lost it

I have just bought a few books for reading on honeymoon (which can't come soon enough!) ,
