Gerald's Game
question
Gerald's Game The Movie?
Still my favorite King book actually, thought it was masterfully done for such difficult subject matter. I agree the movie would be tough to pull off...but hey, remember Castaway? That did okay...
I lived in Los Angeles when this book came out. I remember an ad for the movie 'Gerald's Game,' but they play all kinds of movies in LA and New York City that they don't run all over the nation.
Unfortunately, I never went to the movie, b/c I was totally involved with my work then. I worked for Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Resources, which is what LA's version of Emergency Medical Services is called.
Anyway, I never saw the movie but, when I lived in California I met someone in movies. He told me they do thought movies by acting out the person's flashbacks. And that book was almost nothing BUT flashbacks. They might also have a narrator talking, like they probably did in 'The Green Mile.'
I don't know. I haven't even seen that yet, and Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors.

I remember when I was reading this. It was the first time I ever looked ahead in a book, but I really just had to know for how many pages he would have her handcuffed to the bedpost. I kept flicking through the book thinking... seriously???
And he kept the suspense throughout.

The movie "All is Lost" comes to mind. Almost no dialogue, but to thinking people (the kind that don't require chase scenes, gun fights, and all that brainless filler) still quite entertaining. And it would not be so much silent fighting for life as that one even. The flashbacks and coming to terms with her past, the crazy, scary guy, and the gruesome (come on, usually part of S.K.'s movies) escape (and dog scenes....would definitely fill the film with plenty of action. One thing I didn't see mentioned-she's in nothing but bikini underwear almost the whole move, yet there would probably be some small alteration in her clothing....undershirt, bra, or short nightie.
I think the book was brilliant! Full of details, good progression of events and mystery. I loved it for the author's involvement in the writing, for example, in this specific scene: The woman fell asleep and her hand got numb. As i was reading in Stephen King's book "On writing", King actually tied up his hand and left it for a while to get numb, then released it and vocally recorded what he felt, and the moment in the book got authentic from all perspectives. It takes guts and brilliance to get so deep involved in your ideas, even in a minor moment, and expose them from actual feelings. I respect that...
As for a movie, I wonder why did they not make it by now?

I think this would make a great movie! 127 hours was an awesome movie and it was about a guy pinned down by a rock. Gerald's Game can definitely work if done right.
Anybody who wishes to attempt a film version of this novel is certainly free to give it a try. After wasting several hours reading the book I would not sit through 2 hours of the film for anything less than $250 an hour. I need monetary compensation in order to have any further relationship with this particular SK book.
Yes, Gerald's Game can be very disturbing to some people. But one has to remember that it's just a novel. I do know someone though who still can't talk about the "thing" in the corner.
Although this is one of my favorite King novels, I don't think it would make a very good movie.
I think it could be done, maybe even be a good film in the end. Flashbacks and voice-over (inner monologue) would work for much of it, and between the stray dog, her "visitor" and struggles to get water, try to remove the cuffs, etc., would be enough action to balance it out? Remembering the book from 3 yrs. back, though. Any other opinions? (Flashbacks would HAVE to include Delores, which may confuse some people... separate the fans from the rest! We'd have to explain who she is - unless they used clips from the movie... :)
I couldnt possibly see this working as a movie. The best part of it is the characters inner voice.

I agree with you Paul

Ya I'm guessing the subject matter would be quite tricky to adapt to film. If done well it would be great though. It's one of my favourite SK books. What would never be the same for me though if I were to watch it would be the nauseous feeling I got in several parts of the book. In particular the part where she's getting out of the handcuffs (oh how my stomach churned!)

It's a good idea in theory. The director would have to create just the right atmosphere for it, though, or it would just be frustrating.
Wow, you guys think this would make a good movie? Hmm, to be honest, I threw this book across the room. To this day, I have no idea if the woman ever got her glass of water. :(
I think it would make a good short film. I felt the book was too long for what it was, and would have done better as a novella.

I would go see it. The book was one of my favs. I still have a brain stain from it and love it!!!!!
Problem is, there's no dialogue and very little action! A film of thoughts and tension would not be very popular visually.
I would love for Gerald's Game to be turned into a movie. It would be a hard one to get right; I wonder if that's why there has never been any movement on it.
