DURATION: This might take you more than a year, so you set your own time limit.

RULES: Rereads are fine, if you don’t skim. So are audiobooks. There are three ways to do this challenge:

Option #1 - As an A – Z Spell-It-Out, similar to the Animal Alphabet Challenge. This is pretty straightforward. You can spell out one at a time, or work on several at once. Though there are only 26 letters in the alphabet, your book total could get into the hundreds.

Option #2A – Find 50 books about mythical creatures. The books must feature the creature pretty prominently in the storyline. Clearly indicate which creature is featured in your listing. No repeat creatures, of the ones you are choosing. (Repeats can be in the story, but not be the reason you are choosing the book. In otherwords, you can NOT choose vampire twice; nevertheless, they CAN appear in every book you select.) Expand your mythical knowledge. Why not be adventurous and choose a creature you’ve never read about before? Refer to Listopia for further help.

Option #2B – Added, by popular demand: Two for One. Read at the lower level of 25 books; however, they must have two mythical creatures within the storyline! Again, clearly indicate which two creatures are featured. Same rule applies: No repeats!

Spell-It-Out Example
Using authors’ names (first or last), titles, series title names’, types of creature, or characters’ names, spell out a mythical creature for each letter of the alphabet. Special Note: I chose all mythical creature books in my example; you do NOT have to do this.

         combative, they have no magically ability. But there are a heck of a lot of them!

Can you use more than one creature per book?

Nope. Sorry, Leslie. Unless you want me to adjust the challenge so that there is a lower level of 25 books, allowing two creatures (for a total of 50 creatures)? I could do that.

Running short on space in my three posts, and since I asked everyone to post the definitions, here are the ones for my selections (putting them under spoiler to save you scrolling time):

• Archtophonos
   One of the giant hunting dogs of the god Orion. The other dog was called Ptoophagos. Between them they could hunt down bears.

• Bobbi-Bobbi
   The serpent of Australian myth who founded the boomerang. At a time when the whole earth was covered in water, the giant serpent created game for people to eat. However the people of this world were unable to catch the birds so Bobbi-Bobbi offered one of his ribs to use to throw at the birds. The people then used the boomerang to make holes in the clouds which angered Bobbi-Bobbi who from that moment on, refused to help man. It is also said that the primitive people also used the rib bone to protect themselves from the flying foxes.

• Calopus
   A horned wolf covered in spines like a porcupine. It lived by the Eurphrates River in Iran and would ambush travellers. Usually it was unsuccessful, as it would frequently have its horns caught in bushes and undergrowth. It is also a beast that features in the repertoire of medieval heraldry.

• Degei

• Ewaipanoma
   A race of human-like creatures from the forests of Venezuela. According to the voyager, Sir Walter Raleigh in his second expedition to the area in 1617, there lived a tribe of headless people. They had their mouths in their chests and face just above. It is believed that these were actually the Carib people of Yekunana. In their culture, having high shoulders was seen as sign of beauty, so people tried to shorten the length of their neck and increase the height of their shoulders to a remarkable length. Similar the the People of Caora.

• Faness
   These were a race of people that were documented by the ancient Roman biologist Pliny the Elder’s in his Historia Naturalis (77AD). The Fanes had ears so big that they wrapped themselves up in them.

• Galeru
   A Rainbow Serpent of Kimberley, Australia. It is a cosmic multi-coloured python that lives in deep waters. It created the formation for gullies, rivers and billabongs. Galeru now rests under the Earth supporting the four pillars of cardinal directions that support the Earth itself. He is known to sleep in the mud during the dry season and flies to the sky as a rainbow sending down rain to help life re-grow during the wet season. He has a fascination for anything that is iridescent. Galeru aids its people by sending down cooling rains during times of intense heat.

• Hoopajuba
   The Hoopajuba is a most peculiar creature apart of the Fearsome Critters that featured in the tall tales of the emerging America at the turn of the last century. The Hoopajuba is a strange fish that lives in the bottom of the lake and loves to eat mud worms. The Hoopajuba is usually caught by fishermen for a tasty meal but there is only one known way to catch one.
   First, one must row into the middle of a lake where Hoppajubas live. Then one must drill a hole in the bottom of the lake where the fish lives. Then row back to shore and hide. Make the sound of mud worms very loudly and clearly. The Hoopajuba will hear this and come swimming towards you. It holds its tail in its mouth and spins like a wheel on land rushing straight towards you. When the Hoopajuba is close, put your arm through its hole and put it in your basket.

Part II

• It
   A supernatural spirit from the tales of the Shetland Islands of Britain. The spirit seems to take on an infinite number of forms as each story of the It is different. The spirit appears during the Christmas festive season haunting and bothering people. Although many would disagree on what It looks like and how It travels but what is common about the stories of this being is the way It communicated and how it repeated their thoughts.

• Jordh
   A Giantess from Scandinavian myth who married the Aesir god Odin. They had a child together who became the god Thor. (Also know as Fiorgyn.)

• Kinderschrecker
   This was an Ogre from Germany. The name roughly translates as ‘Child-Guzzler’ as it was fond of eating children. Stories of the Ogre originated in the Middle Ages at the time of printing and these stories were used to scare misbehaved children by nursemaids. Since the 17th century this Ogre became a town creature preserved in effigies.

• Landvaettir
   The Landvaettir were underground Elf guardians of Iceland. They are the protectors of the land. When Norse ships sail to the shore it was customary to remove the Dragon heads on their boats to not offend the Landvaettir.

• Mafu
   A creature believed to have lived in China according to ancient bestiaries. The Mafu was a tiger that had a human face. It was a fierce predator that fed on people. The Mafu lived on Vine Channel Mountain.

• Nixi
   Water creatures from Scandinavia, Germany, and Switzerland who haunts lakes and rivers. They are not attractive but have long grey hair and aged face. Like the Mermaid they lure their victims into the water to be drowned. Male Nixi have quite a different appearance with the head and neck of a human, the body of a fox and the lower-half of a horse.

• Orc
   These creatures were recreated as green strong men with tusks, sharp teeth and pointed ears in JRR Tolkien’s novels. However the Orc was originally described as a mass of flesh with teeth and was an enemy to the whale. The Saxons believed the Orcs to be spirits of the Earth. The poet William Blake describes them as servants of the Devil.

• Philamaloo Bird
   A creature from the myths of the American lumberjacks. This bird had a great disliking to the cold and damp as it would easily suffer from rheumatism. When ill with this, it would fly upside down to cure itself.

• Quel
One of the four creatures that brought maize to the gods in the tales of the Mayan people. The gods used this maize to create man. The others were Hoh, Utiu and Yac.

Part III

• Rosmarine
   A sea creature that had a human torso with the hind quarters of a walrus or whale. It had the arms of a human and the large head of a walrus. It had huge ears and skin like a seal. It climbed up on rocks using its teeth to feed on the grass.

• Snipe
   The Snipe comes from the folklore of the North American lumberjacks in the 19th and 20th centuries. This peculiar bird was seen by many huntsmen, engineers, cruisers and hard-rock apprentices and many of them tried to capture the Snipe but non succeeded. The Snipe is described as a blue, green and pink bird with specks of gold. It has feathers on the outside of its body but fur like the Mudjekeewis of Ojibwe legends on the inside. This dual feathers and fur meant that it had a protective coat for the marsh and swamps that it lived in. While swimming, its rigid feathers would fold back forming a perfectly smooth back with little friction against the water.

The Snipe has a curved beak on a bull-wheel base meaning that it can turn its beak to capture insects without turning its head. It stands at 17cm tall and has a third small leg which it uses for balance. One eye has a reptilian vertical pupil and the other has a horizontal slit. Its eyes blink alternatively causing it to have a sharp awareness about itself.

• Thunderbird - 00/11
   Birds of North America that have the power to create thunder and cause havoc between forces and beings. They are very popular among many tribes. One Thunderbird of the Iroquois people is Oshadagea meaning ‘Dew Eagle’. Another Thunderbird is Keneun, the leader of the Thunderbirds that stole the fire from the great hare Manabusch.

• Uriel
   His name translates as ‘The Light of the God’ or ‘My Light is God’. He is the light that guides people to heaven on the Day of Judgement. Some scriptures refer to him a Ariel but he is mainly known as Uriel. There is also confusion on whether he is an Angel as some scriptures now considered not divinely inspired mention him as a human being. He is the guardian of the south and is one of the four Seraphim. Early depicts the four Angels around God’s throne, one in each of the cardinal directions.

• Vila
   These are Slavic fairies who inhabit various aspects of nature such as trees, lakes, fields and rivers. They are virgins of children and come up from their graves to engage in a dance. Anyone who joins in with their dancing ritual will be magically enticed to dance with them until they die. Sometimes they are known to be fairy godmothers and predict the fate of children like the Moirae. They are called Wili and Samovily in other languages.

• Wendigo
   A creature of North America that has a different appearance depending on the tribe. The Ojibwa believe that it is an Ogre and the Canadians believe that it is a crocodile with hoofed feet or the feet of a bear. The most popular notion of the Wendigo is the spirit of a lost hunter from the myths of the Aconquin Indians.

• Xi Wang Mu
   Seen as a beast with the teeth of a tiger the tail of a leopard and the face of a beautiful woman, Hsi Wang Mu is the source of Yin, the female energy of this world. She lives in a palace where she is attended by the three-legged birds, the Jade Girls. She grows the peaches of immortality that ripen every three thousand years. Whoever eats these peaches is released from death. His consort is Dong Wang Gong. Also know as Hsi Wang Mu.

• Yech
   A fairy from Indian belief that is the size of a cat and has a magical white hat that turns it invisible when worn. It lives on pathways and in the wilderness where it causes travellers ot become lost. If it is caught it will become your servant. Yechs are powerful creatures that have the ability to move mountains and shift cities.

• Zalty
   This was a snake from the Baltic regions. It will find its owner and live in their house. There, it will be watched by the gods. It will bring prosperity to the owner. However if the owner misbehaves in anyway, the Zalty will silently sliver away.

Oh man! So many fun challenges, SO little time! I think I'll join in on this one, I do like my fantasy books too. I have no idea how long it will take me to get 50 different mythical beasts. I'm kinda hoping that the lower level of 25 books with 2 creatures happens. It would make things a wee bit easier since if there's one mythical beast in a book there's usually more than just that one. :) And wouldn't you know it, I JUST finished a book a couple of days ago that had succubus and incubus and all sorts of other demons. :(

The first creature I'm adding is my all-favourite. It's the Bulgarian Samodiva.

I wrote a 20 page paper in German a few years ago, comparing faeries, elves and samodivi. That is how much I love them :). This is a nice image, although it's not exactly how I imagine them :). I'll read the books some time in the summer, when I go back to Bulgaria, I guess. Unless I find it online, I just so feel like reading the tales already :D. Btw, I've just added the book and the author to GR, it might take some time until I update the pages. It's such a pity it is unknown outside of Bulgaria, I might translate it some day. After all, I'm considering it as a career path anyway ;). And the books is absolutely worth it. Nikolay Raynov's and Andersen's fairy-tales had such an impact on me as a child, I would be an absolutely different person, had I not grown up with them. And no, I'm not exaggerating.
