The excitement of a new book release has gotten some of us interested in reading earlier Alan Gregory books :-) We are featuring Missing Persons as a Group Read during the Month of May 2012. Please join us if you're interested.

Laurel (laureljean) Will get a copy of Missing Persons and read it. Looking forward to both it and Line of Fire. Thanks!!

Excellent. I'm enjoying Line of Fire :-)
Missing Persons will be my next audiobook I start after a couple of short Koontz ones - I can get through audiobooks much faster than paper books.

Laurel (laureljean) I'm listening to my first audiobook, if you can believe that! Defending Jacob.

Wow! You've never listened to an audiobook before....ever? Is that Jodi Picoult?

Jan C (woeisme) | 119 comments I downloaded the kindle of Missing Persons. Looks interesting.

Laurel (laureljean) Never. Defending Jacob is my first. It's by William Landay.

Missing Persons 1&2 by One Republic (I love One Republic):
"A Missing Person's at the window starring at me saying things I can't hear. A missing Person's at the window starring at me - haven't seen them in years."

Christine I am going to start as soon as I finish Critical Conditions. Should be either today or tomorrow :)

I like this book - Missing Persons is referenced quite a bit in the latest installment, Line of Fire.

Christine I finally started Missing Persons. I'm only about 30 pages in. The thing I like about Stephen White's books is that they start out really exciting. Anyway, I'm hooked. It looks to be another good Alan Gregory book.

Laurel (laureljean) I'm behind. Just downloaded Missing Persons. Want to read that before I start Line of Fire.

Great book!

Christine I just finished Missing Persons. Its a good read but not as good as other Alan Gregory books. Has anyone else finished?

Laurel (laureljean) I'm still reading and enjoying it. About 35% through the book.

I finished. It's not my favorite, but I really liked it. I'm debating between 4 and 5 stars :-)

Jan C (woeisme) | 119 comments I'm about halfway through. I'm enjoying it.

Christine One thing that I had forgotten and was alluded to several times in the book but not mentioned by name is the JonBenet Ramsey case. I had forgotten that happened in Boulder. Such a sad case on so many levels.

Laurel (laureljean) For some reason I was surprised he alluded to it so many times. The very first time he mentioned a missing girl the previous Christmas, I thought it was going to be part of the case.

Christine I thought so too but I found it interesting that he never mentioned her by name, not once.

I noticed that & likewise found it very interesting :-)

Laurel (laureljean) I finished the book today and decided to give it only 3 stars. I liked the first half or so quite a bit, but then I thought too many characters were thrown in without a whole lot of background or explanation and the ending seemed half-hearted.

I felt the same way. The book kind of fizzled at the end. I am used to Stephen White having very exciting endings to his books. This was just ok. Canada, Doyle Chandler and Walter needed a little more fleshing out. Are they in previous books?

Jan C (woeisme) | 119 comments I, too, finished this afternoon. The ending felt a little contrived to me.

Maybe he was planning on using some of those characters in a later book. Obviously, not the dead ones.

I give it 4 stars

A few favorite parts:
"It's not always sunny here. But I have to admit that it feels like it's always sunny here." - Missing Persons, Chapter 16

"What about food?" Raoul asked.
"Help yourself to whatever's there," the guy had said.
The only food in the Airstream cupboards, it turned out, was a yellow box of cornstarch, a rusty can without a label, and an old margarine tub that was half full of something that resembled ground chiles.
The water from the faucet smelled like a rat had peed in it.
Raoul had decided it was a good day to start a cleansing fast.

- Missing Persons, Chapter 56

"Make My Day" - Missing Persons, Chapter 73
