question
Was it hard to picture Spider as black (not to be racist)?

I had a hard time picturing him as black. I really pictured him the same way I pictured Fang from the Maximum Ride series. How bout you guys?
I didnt realise he was actually darker skinned until it talked about the police looking for a 'Large black teen and a small white teen' But I guess I can picture it after I read that bit of info. But orgionaly in my head he was white. :)
O thought of him as black. Nit to be racist, but when it talked about his height and his smell...
At first I pictured him with like red hair and green eyes for some reason, then they gave the description with him also being baled which really confused me. Somebody should find a pic!
Yeah, I mean I have nothing against black people(or different people all together) but, yeah I thought he was white.
At First i thought he was white but then when they said he was black i changed the image in my head pratty easily its good to see charecters like that I just had a hard time picturing him with the Afro in my head he always had short hair.
He was described pretty early actually guys... Just sayin'. And to those that are saying you WANTED him to be white that IS racist no matter how many times you say (Not to be racist). Interracial couples in YA are rare (in the sense of it not being a book ABOUT color.) I have lots of gay relationships in my writing and I like making it subtle (as a straight relationship) because I think it's stupid that people need it to be a point.
i thought he was white at irst but then i read the part where there in the barn i figured he was black
Same! I didn't actually want him to be black (not to be racist, I just want the characters to be like that), I imagined him as Matty from Awkward and Jem as Jenna .____.
I actually thought of him as black (not racist) it was just the way I pictured him!
yeah when i first reading it and they mentioned him i thought he was white. (not be racist)
^^ I automatically do that too..no offense...sorry. But yeh, i had him as a white guy then i figured out he was black and i just couldnt picture it...
i understood that he was black but it didnt change anything and i could picture him like that but i did keep forgetting that his nan was black, i couldnt really picture that
At the very beginning it was hard to picture him black, but as I got further and further to the end it was actually really easy. I just couldn't picture him with an afro and I had a hard time picturing his son Adam, since he was biracial (white and black).
(Not to be racist) I really saw Spider as white. It was kind of awkward to figure out he wasnt. I felt really bad afterward.
I didn't even realize he was black until about halfway through the book, so..yes. I had been picturing him white the entire time. Oops.
Well... i just couldn't imagine him till the moment where they were being "haunted".... but.. after that i imagined that he could be like the actor Rob Brown...
Me too,I was surprised that spider is black. It was hard to change the picture in my head, but when I got so far, he was really good looking^^
I kind of forget he was black, but i just imagined him with darker skin. But what really surprised me is that she said he was 6"4 which is huge! like a basketball player.
At first I had to try to see him that was that way but eventually it was very easy.
I knew he was black. She does mention it in the first couple of chapters and also the way both of them kept using slangs. And its really not that hard but poor Adam.
I knew he was black... but i imagined him bald though.
yeah... i didn't picture him as black at all. I saw him as a pale kinda lanky thing. It was shocking when i found out.
I know. And it good that the author put it that way. Many character out there (in the book) is light skinned and it good to have a change for once. Like why ain't most young adult book main character is Asian or Black?
I could not put it in my head that he was black or when it got to The Caos that Adam was black but it didn't make a huge difference so I was fine
Yeah me too. Without being racist I didn't honestly think that Spider was black considering where they liv and all that jazz...

Well, I usually always automatically picture characters white (sorry if that racist)-but when it told me otherwise, i could change the image pretty easily. But with Hazel in TSON i thought she was white until like, her third flashback, and it was hard to think of her differently-i also thought she was like, 16 yrs old until MoA, so that was confusing.(But i picture her just fine now)
I'm kind of amazed by a lot of the racsist comments in this thread. It IS racsist to say "I know his character is black, but I wanted him to be white!! aghh!!". Geez, whats wrong with the character being a person of color? my god.
